Week 2- This week of student teaching has flown by. It's hard to believe I only have three days of student teaching left at AFG after the weekend. It's been a blast and the students have been great. There has never been a moment since I have gotten to Werne were I ever felt alone. Everyone here has been so helpful! The teachers, my host family, and even the students have been super helpful throughout this whole experience. Words cannot express how thankful I am for all the help and support shown by those who have taught me so much along the way. I am so thankful to have been blessed with an opportunity like this and have enjoyed every minute since I have been here. This week I have taught about everything from Shakespeare to ... read more

Wednesday-My first Wednesday at AFG was a very, very long day. I began the school day in Mrs. Eckert's 7th grade geography class in which we discussed the over usage of natural resources. The students did a good job of communicating their understanding of the content in both English and German. I have been blow away by some of the great, higher level responses that have been given by many of the students here at the school. After the geography class I had an 11th grade English class with Mrs. Eckert. I enjoyed this class for many reasons but the primary reason why I enjoyed it was due to the fact that Christian, my host bother, is a student in the class. After this class I had my first history class here at AFG with Mr. ... read more

Tuesday-My second day at AFG was my first official day in the classroom and it was truly a great experience. I began the day in Mrs. Eckert's 7th grade English class. When Mrs. Eckert and I entered the classroom all the students stood up from their seats and politely greeted us. The students the remained standing until Mrs. Eckert gave them the command to take a seat. Afterward I spent a brief amount of time introducing myself and telling the students a little bit about Kentucky and the area in which I live. Many of the students seemed really excited and seemed to enjoy the presence of an American in the classroom. For the remainder of the time in class I revised and reviewed some of the short stories written by the students in English. To ... read more

Monday- On the morning of my first day at Anne-Frank Gymnasium, or AFG, Christian and I rode our bikes across town to arrive at school around 7:35. Our first day at AFG was much different than the days since due to the fact that this was the day that WDR, a tv station from Dortmund, came to film a news story about myself and the other student teachers for the nightly news. Instead of being in school for the whole day Heike gave us a ride into Werne so that the news crew could get some footage of us walking around town. It was a lot of fun getting to walk through the streets of Werne and to see the old town square which was created hundreds of years before the United States was even declared ... read more

Sunday- The trip from Berlin to Werne was certainly a long and tiring one. To pass some time on the train ride Heike and I talked about everything from the Berlin Wall to classic country music. The time the two of us were able to spend with each other on the train was a great experience and very insightful into the perspective of a west German growing up in the time of the wall. Our conversation showed me how special the reunification of the country was for everyone. As the time grew shorter and shorter until we were to reach our destination I began to feel more and more anxious about meeting my host family. Questions rushed through my head about whether or not they would like me, if I would be an inconvenience, and many ... read more

Visiting the Reichstag Building has been one of my favorite experiences of the whole trip thus far. After seeing pictures of the Reichstag in history classes over the years and after hearing story after story of the destruction and the triumph of this famous structure, it has been a place that I have really wanted to visit. But like most things on this trip I got to do more than just look at it. Thanks to Heike, the group and I were all lucky enough to not only go inside but also to tour the glass dome, sit in the Parliamentary Hall, and even speak to a few cabinet members that work in the office of the German Parliament member representing Heike’s district, Dr. Silvia Joerrissen. I had a blast and was so thankful to have ... read more
