hello everyone!!! im sitting in an internet cafe in the small town of wacken, about an hour from Hamburg in Germany, with a population of 300 except for one week of the year when the population gets up to 30, 000 consisting of crazy metalheads!!! Of course this included yours truly :D apologies in advance for any typos, the german keyboards vary slightly from ours. Ok, where to start. I last left you with our departure from crappy london at last!! We got on the plane to germany, and it was so exciting coz there were so many metalheads on our flight!!! There was a really exciting atmosphere, even tho it was only 6 in the morning. The flight was really quick, only 1hr 15min. We met some fellow metallers on the plane, 4 guys from ... read more

Slept in for the first time since year 9. I didnt awake till 11,30 when Chris came and knocked on the door. Headed to Poland today and Chris decided he would come with us. Just like to say that Jakob, and Chris, have been amazing hosts and I had an absolute ball. Its such a different and great experience staying with a local, living in the suburbs and experiencing some of the more authentic side of a country. So we had been planning to catch the bus to Berlin and then get a train to Warsaw, but at the bus station Chris found a bus to Warsaw for 29 euro, which saved us 40euro so I was ecstatic. Must say we did compromise comfort quite a bit. Chris's entire body was contorted trying to fit in ... read more

After going to bed at 1.30am I then awoke at 4.45 to go to the German Island of Sylt, off the coast of Denmark. Noone else had yet appeared so I woke up Chris and Cam and later we and Jakob staggered bleary eyed to the station, amazingly it was already light. Once we got to Altona where we had to change trains, we realised it was going to cost us 30 euro because we were travelling in peak time, whereas if we waited until 9.30am, some 3 hours, it would only cost 7.50 euro. So we waited for the later train, Chris somehow managed to get a little cafe to open up half an hour early for us. The beach was beautiful. It was a cute quite large beachside town but it cost 3.5 euro ... read more

Woke up to some beautiful weather in Hamburg. Chris, Cam grabbed some bikes out of the garage and went off to the nearby nature reserve. It was humungous and I was scared on several occasions that I was going to die. Im no Lance Armstrong and the mum's bike complete with saddle for carrying goods wasnt really ideal for the terrain especially hills. Lots of fun though, especially watching a ligthweight plane take off over us, and nearly take us out. We headed into Hamburg, 26mins by train ( the german's are very precise) and did a spot of shopping and strolling. Hamburg is infact rather reminiscent of Melbourne. We cooked up a big meal of satayed chicken which Jakob calls Wok, as well as an apple crumble and later on a cleaned up in the ... read more

Today Cam and I hired some bikes, which Im sure is the best way to see Berlin. Its amazingly big and a fantastic place to visit. So rich in history, I love it because every where I turn there is something I have learnt about and it makes it all the more special and interesting. The WWII stuff is really where my interests lie, Im just not into art and churches.. We rode to the largest remaining section of the Berlin Wall, separating east from west and got a few pictures there. It is covered in Graffiti as Berlin in one of only a few cities where graffiti is legal. Seeing that derelict length of concrete is so surreal when you know that during our lifetime it was the Iron Curtain and literally separated families and ... read more

Hi. Lots of running around, lots of soccer and finally some time to breath! I haven't written since Prague because I've been in intense soccer travel mode! I went Prague - Nuremburg - Kaiserslautern - Frankfurt - Munich - Rostock - Lubeck - Hamburg since! And each in one and two day increments, so it's been INTENSE! Tomorrow things will start to be a little bit more chilled out. I fly back to Zagreb to see Zvon and have 8 days undefined there where I intend on resting and perhaps making way to the coast for a handful of days before going to Denmark in July and back to Berlin for the final. Summarizing a week of my life: Last I wrote was halftime of the England game while we watched from the square in Prague. ... read more

We have decided to split the Germany blog into two parts. This one will cover our time spent in Glückstadt, ours visits to Hamburg, Travemünde and Lübeck. The second blog, which should be sent out this coming Monday, will cover our night spent in Düsseldorf and our day trip up to Westerland on the Island of Sylt. Glückstadt, Hamburg, Travemünde and Lübeck We were in Germany for a total of 10 sunny days. Our base for the trip was Susanne and Walter’s (Kai’s Dad) place in the picturesque town of Glückstadt. Glückstadt (located in the Schleswig-Holstein region i.e. northern tip of Germany) on the river Elbe was founded by King Christian IV of Denmark in 1617. Its name, translated in English, means "Lucky City". 5 to 6 June 2006 We spent our first day catching up ... read more

6:20am isn’t the best time in the morning to be woken up by your alarm any day of the week, and this was a Saturday... What the heck were we thinking? Miniature Wunderland was our mission for the day, and that involved a 70 minute wait for slackers who go there any later than 10am. So our fate had been decided - wake up at the crack of dawn, race to the train station, board the train to Hamburg (the untravelled land - so far) and find this so called 'Wonderland'. 9:50am we were assured that we only had a 10 minute wait ahead of us... pfft! So had the other flock of ambitious tourists... so our 10 minutes turned into 90 minutes. Once we navigated our way around the lines, paid our entry fees, we ... read more
