Oh my god I forgot to learn German! I’ve become so accustomed to understanding at least some of what’s going on around me and being able to communicate my wants and needs in French that I totally forgot what it would feel like to all of a sudden be in a country that speaks a language of which I am completely unfamiliar. And even though I don’t speak a word of Dutch, travelling to Holland never posed that kind of problem to me because everyone there seems to speak English. Germany however, is a different story. After Janna came to visit me in Strasbourg for a few days, I went up to Hamburg with her to spend some time in the city where she grew up. I was there from June 25-29 but haven’t had internet ... read more

our final full day in Berlin was depressing, to say the least. we decided that since we were in Germany we must go see a concentration camp. we found a day tour to one just north of Berlin called Sachsenhausen. we met up with our tour guide at 10:30am on Sunday. we weren't really sure what to expect. our tour guide was amazing. she has been doing the tours for over 2 years and definately knows her stuff. we headed up to the camp via train, just as its prisioners had just decades ago. we marched through the small town that was once known as "S.S. ville" because there were so many S.S. officers occupying it during the camp's operating years. the camp opened up during Hitler's reign in the early 1930s and stayed operating well ... read more

Well, that is what people in Hamburg tell me. If you have never visited this city in Northern Germany you are missing out on a good thing. One of the lovliest things is that a canal comes right up to the 'rathaus' or city hall in the center of town. It flows from one of the two lakes that sit right in the center of city that has some of the most beautiful architecture in Germany if not all of Europe. And the people use these lakes for recreation with boat houses built all around the perimeter. Today on a canal tour I saw many young children learning how to master kayaks, small dinghy type sail boats and larger sail boats. The down town was abuzz with workmen building stalls right in front of the rathaus ... read more

Aaron and I crashed in a hostel we found in Hamburg for the night and slept until 11am when we had to check out. We grabbed a bite to eat and Aaron decided that he would head to Berlin instead of Amsterdam as he would only be able to spend an evening there and it would be pointless to train so much for one night. We parted ways after an amazing month in europe together and I headed off to the train station for a six hour ride to Amsterdam. I sat on the train next to a cute Swedish girl who had actually been at the Hurricane festival the same as myself. We chatted the entire trip and parted ways when arriving in amsterdam as I headed off to my hostel and she met ... read more

Hey everyone, so this past weekend Sarah and i split up and i headed off to Hamburg to visit a very good friend of my family, Jana. She used to be an Au-pair of ours when George, Kate and I were younger...much younger and a heck of a lot shorter that is for sure....an au-pair for those of you who don't know is a European name for a nanny, but it's not a profession. A lot of young students do it as a way to gain experiences in other countries and such. Anyway, it was a fabulous weekend of remenising and meeting her son, Max, 7, and her husband, Marcus. They are such wonderful people to visit and it was just the time i needed to get away for a bit...so good weekend! Only one week ... read more

Hallo, Everyone! I hope life is pleasant and sunny on your side of the pond! Germany is doing well; the weather was a scorcher this weekend! How was it in the States? It’s not like I could get a clear answer to that question, though, since you readers are located everywhere from California, Montana, and Colorado, to New York City, Chicago, and Boston. And there are also European readers in the bunch, so it’s not fair to you either. Before I get into the traveling business, don’t forget to vote! I’ve received many votes so far, but I’d love to hear more opinions from the rest of you! With roughly 100 friends and family reading this weekly, I could definitely conduct a semi-professional survey of North American perceptions of Europe and so on. So vote. ... read more
