It was a brilliant and sunny morning when we met at the Harburg Bahnhof. It was one of those days when it was already hot at 7am and poised to grow to a steady and ceaseless broil by noon. Nonetheless, the American group, led by Monika and Joachim, my phenomenal hosts and guides for the day, were ready for our first American only excursion into the surrounding area. Some passed the time on the S-Bahn by creating games to play, like striking a pose and trying not to fall over as the cars shook and slowed along the route. Ninja master of this game was most definitely Delaney Gischer! Bergedorf it is a brilliant mid-sized shopping town steeped in history. Everywhere you look, history presents itself in this town. It is one of the very few ... read more

Side Note... Not a group activity but rather something I thought I would share... As a football coach, I know that I am not really supposed to like the game of soccer. However, with the moral decay of the NBA rapidly increasing during the 1990’s and 2000’s, it quickly created a culture which I could not support and came to find great disdain for. This was further justified when our proud franchise, the Sonics were stolen from us by a group of Midwestern cattle rustlers. As a sports fanatic however, I needed to find something to follow between football and baseball season. I came to know the game of soccer when I had the opportunity to study in England during college. It grew on me… the passion, and the tradition. I have been an ardent soccer ... read more

We gathered at Hanhoopsfeld School on this beautiful summer morning with great anticipation of what was in store. If anyone was attempting to hide their excitement behind the guise of sleepy eyes, it wasn’t working. We boarded the charter bus promptly at 9 and were off. An hour later, coming into sight of one of the most amazing theme park spectacles imaginable, we were akin to the Griswold’s arriving at Wally World, though thankfully Heide-Park was actually open! As we the teachers recited the requisite expectations and agreed upon return time, all eyes were no doubt focused not on us, but rather on the “Colossos” looming large and in charge in the background. When the teachers had finished their seemingly never-ending spiel, the students, German and American alike, were off to the rides at speeds even ... read more

Saturday evening we were treated to quite a feast at the Welcome Dinner held at Sinstorf School. When we arrived at 6, the BBQ was already filling the air with the smells of summer. The Welcome Dinner also provided the first time we were able to meet with the group since we arrived. We started the evening with a quick check in meeting as an American group. We were able to share some of the things that we had done since arriving. Number one on just about everyone’s list was copious amounts of sleep! Some had ventured into the city, to local parks, the Hamburg Zoo and of course the mall. It really seems like everyone is doing well and adjusting nicely to the different style of life! Everyone also enjoyed sharing the things that they ... read more

At approximately 6am local time on Friday, 9pm Thursday Burlington time, a tired but excited group of travelers arrived safely in Hamburg. After a final few words of advice and collecting our luggage, the group flowed through the exit gates and into the warm embrace of kind smiles and waving flags of our hosts. It always seems like as quickly as the doors open, the kids are on their way to their home for the next three weeks, whisked away by their enthusiastic host families in a cloud of dust. Today will be the hardest day. Tired from little sleep and exhausting travel, and perhaps a bit of homesickness creeping in. I have heard though that some have already ventured into the city with their hosts in hopes of keeping awake. Tomorrow is the Welcome Dinner ... read more

Some months ago, I received a message from Hadi asking me whether I would allow him to translate my blog post on Istanbul into Persian and post it on his blog. I felt honoured, and of course I said yes, and here is the result: http://jahangard.blogsky.com/1390/12/17/post-4/.... read more

Early Summer Experience in Hamburg: It is a chance to attend ISC2012 in Hamnurg, and let me have a chance to the North part of Germany and also the first time to Germany. As being heavily occupied by mail driven style work in IT company, it is also very tight to figure out the city in a detail manner (Be able to go around) before I go. Without proper preparation, I am on the airplane. Paris is the first city in Europe that I landed in late 90s. Hamburgs is the city I meet with Europe agian since 2003. Becasue is far north, I enjoy the comfort of the coll and dry climate, and is luxery for me who from the wet and humid sub-tropical area. It take less than 20 minute to take a Taxi ... read more

Ahogy a tanfolyam elindult, kiderult hogy milyen jo kis helyen vagyunk voltakeppen. A Reeperbahn vigalmi hangulatat, Sankt Pauli karcos-harcos-dacos antiglob vilagat maga mogott hagyja a kalariba latogato, es amint a vasajto becsukodik, teljes csond es nyugalom uralkodik a kis agyagbirodalomban. Reggelente az uccso bulizokat epp elcsipve erkeztek a tanitvanyok meditaciora, melyet Csabi remek gerinkimelo ashtangaja kovetett - rendre rekordokat dontogetve, 5-10 fos csoportoknak, mely azert nagy szam, mert 1) kora reggel van, 2) a kalariban 2-3-8 fos csoportokat lattunk edzeni barmit is (bar ok fizettek erte, a mienk pedig a program resze).
