If you come to Northern Germany one day, you should not stay in the big cities like Hamburg and Bremen only. To experience real German country life one should at least spend a few nights in a typicall small village - like Floegeln and Fickmuehlen e.g. Hardly any German knows where to find them on a map. So they are really not spoilt by tourism. It's countryside: shallow hills covered by woods, barley fields, meadows and moors. Cows and horses on the meadows, nice old inns in the villages - and people talking a specific Northern German dialect. There are small lakes, where locals even windsurf, narrow canals to cruise on - and the sea just 10 minutes drive away - even when the North Sea has withdrawn due to low-tide. In the small ports nearby ... read more

It has been brought to my attention that my blog ha not contained sufficent numbers of 'funny bits' for the punters who are reading for a cheap thrill, so here are four= 1 Biking along kustenkanal I suddenly, involuntarily, burst into song.... into song in german. The song went 'Ich bin ein auto/...' fortunately for the world I stopped at that one line but the presence of german and dutch all around me is obivously having an effect, not only does it mke me burst into song but my mind plays little snippets of german sounding words as I bike 'ich, isch, und, etc' 2 When I went to the bed and breakfast on the first night I introdued myself as Clint and the litle old lady introduced herself as 'Frau Memblick' (well, something like that). ... read more

Our train trip to Germany wasn't the best experience. Our train from Holland was delayed for about an hour after a broken down goods train was blocking the tracks, which meant we missed our connecting train to Bremen. After we arrived late in Bremen, the camp ground was about an hours walk from the tram stop our Lonely Planet Guide advised us to get off at. We were extra annoyed when we later found out there was a bus that stopped right outside the campsite. Luckily we made it there before the reception closed, and after taking off our heavy bags and setting up, we enjoyed a great meal in a superb lakeside setting. We spent the following 2 days exploring the beautiful city of Bremen. In the centre were beautiful old buildings and streets. The ... read more

Now it's my turn to visit Phydie in Germany (which I am actually a national of). I went to Hamburg from Oslo via Bremen and it was my first time to come there. I had no idea how to get to the Central Station from the Bremen Airport but Phydie told me that I can go there by either using the tram or the train/subway. I was gonna go for the train but I found the tram first and hopped on it not knowing where it was heading. I tried to buy ticket from the machine but I had no coins and I was so conscious of everybody in the tram looking at me as if I was so stupid not to understand how it works (which I am sad to admit is almost true). So ... read more

If there's one thing that I've learnt in Bremen in the past months is that if its raining it's not one of those lovely 'sit inside with a book days'. Because those days happen all too often and if you abide by that rule you'll become a hermit. So being the 30th of August, my birthday, I decided to go and wander the streets of Bremen in the rain and discover some things that until now I never knew existed. So this blog is essentially another photo album of images that have been taken around Bremen on a rainy day, which if you know Bremen in winter is quite common. Just so you have something to read if you want, I'm gonna add some of my views on the photos I've taken, feel free to read ... read more

Yes, I know I still haven't written up Ecuador yet, but at least some of this blog can be contemporary I figure, and I have time to kill. I'm in an internet cafe in Bremen waiting. I seem to have done a lot of this in the past few dazs. (Bz the waz, German kezboards have z's where the y's should be and vice-versa so there will be a few z's and y's out of place here and there.) Yesterdaz was the wedding, In Oldenburg, of mz friends Nadine and Manfred whom I met in Australia last zear in the little town of Walpole. It was verz schön. For those of zou who like to know such details, the bride wore a beautiful velvet brown / dark purple gothish affair off the shoulders with a bit ... read more

Werder Bremen vs Bayer 04 Leverkusen... the match we had been waiting for. Werder Bremens first home game of the 2006/2007 season and we had tickets. Making it our first live European soccer game. Saturday the 19th of August, 2006 was match day. That morning we dressed our selves to support Werder our adopted team in true Bremen style. With scarves in hand we were off. Our only problem, again a lack of German vocabulary. Unable to sing Werders tunes in German we had to modify them a little, to fit in. Our version of their club song went some thing like this... "Wer-der Brem-men.... something, something yeh... do-di-do-do-doo-do do-di-do-do-doooo" From our house we ventured into town to meet the others and made our way to Wesser Stadium. Conviently there was a bus waiting at the ... read more

The annual Bremen Music Festival was on this weekend. It is 3 days of Jazz, Swing, Rock and Roll and old people. The city streets were full of 'the older generation' enjoying live music and sipping wine and beer. We decided to stroll into town and check it out - see what all the crowds were for. So these are a few pictures from the days events, in particular the parade that came down the centre shopping strip, which was a showcase of old cars and a jamboree. And being a Sunday in Germany, usually all the shops are closed. But today, amazingly enough shop owners had brunch early and opened their doors for the crowds. So we decided to go and window shop a little and have a quick brows in some shops. It was ... read more

Sonntag 6th August, 2006. Today was the Fan Day for SV Werder Bremen - the füßball team which we have adopted while we live here in Germany. We decided to check the festivities out and the day began with a 9:30am training session, which we got up bright and early to go and see. After this, there was the official presentation of the 2006/2007 team and then players were situated at each of the sponsors stands signing autographs and taking photos. We watched the training session along with scores of other Werder faithfuls in the nice morning heat then made out way through the crowds to the sponsor stands to line up for autographs. The players were signing between the hours of 12 noon and 2 pm, and we left the training session at 10:45. We ... read more
