Departure I'd like to think of myself as a seasoned traveler-- ten minutes before I leave for the airport I toss a clean shirt, a bottle of whiskey, and a bullwhip into a well-worn valise and I'm off. The reality is different. I over-plan to the point that I drive myself crazy. There's plan A, backup plan B, and backup to the backup, plan C. I print out my plane tickets and compulsively check them every day in case the words miraculously rearranged themselves during the night. The uncertainty of travel caused by COVID and flight cancellations has made me even crazier. And this time I have to multiply everything by five because I'm also worrying about my four students. I calculate the odds of all of us making it there and back again without a ... read more

Also fuhr ich weiter zu meinem ... read more

The day after arriving in Germany I congratulated myself on averting jetlag. Then I missed two nights of sleep. As soon as my head touched pillow some part of my brain grabbed onto the idea that the sun had just come up. I suppose it had in California. I lay in the dark counting church bells: one at quarter past, two at half past, three at quarter till, four-o-clock, five-o-clock and then maybe I achieved some rough form of unconsciousness until an orgy of bells at eight. For the rest of the day I felt like pieces of sandpaper were wedged under my eyelids. Backstory Several years ago I received an email from a man with a peculiar first name. Wolf-Dieter was a German computer science professor looking for a visiting professorship at San Jose State. ... read more

Arriving in Ingolstadt, I felt every muscle in my body relax. My long-arse journey had reached its end. This is one instance when I revoke my usual belief of 'it's all about the journey' and thought "thank f*ck I've arrived". Suzanna drove us back to her place, and in my zombie-like state, we spent an hour or so comparing opinions and sharing stories on our teaching experiences, then I did something I've been longing to do for the past 30-odd hours: I took a steaming hot bubble bath. And oh my goodness, it was goooood! I could have laid in there for hours, but knowing I'd probably fall asleep, waking up cold and to the sounds of Suzanna and Christian banging on the door, needing to get ready for work, I made it brief. Ish. I ... read more

So, rather than give a blow-by-blow account of the multi-leg, 37 hour door-to-door, soul-destroying journey from Kathmandu to Munich, during which I glided around five airports and four planes in an Ed Norton in Fight Club-style insomniac trance, I decided to just make notes of random thoughts and conversations that took place along the way: Seriously bitch, jumping the queue by one person will not get you to Delhi any quicker. Why is there a pigeon in departures? Why am I the only person shocked by the pigeon in departures? Hmm....let me have a healthy dinner tonight. "Can I have an iced cafe latte, a Caesar salad with extra cheese, and a Boston nut brownie, please?" Doh! In fairness, though, I didn't expect the brownie to come covered in warm chocolate sauce! Three hours down; six ... read more

Hello friends. I am in Germany! Everything is settling in now, but oh boy did it start interestingly. I arrived two weeks ago today with no clothes, shoes, or sheets, pillows for my bed. My bag got lost in Canada, i suppose. Luckily, NOTHING is open in Germany on Sundays. ha. But seriously, only bars and restaurants are open. Anyhow, I arrived here, recieved my keys, and "moved" into my room. My view is beautiful. A catherdral from around the 1400s is right outside--however they ring the bells so much! The first night, my room was so cold without blankets that I pulled my mattress into my bathroom, next to the heater, to try to sleep. I did get to eat that day, though, don't worry. I had all my legal documents and money in my ... read more

Bavarian Weekend As soon as I arrived in the city's hauptbanhof, Munich (or München) already lived up to ist world legacy, indeed proving that they are, for real, the home to the Oktoberfest. Getting off the train and arriving late at night, I grabbed a quick bite at a jampacked local snack store where everyone is eating differents wursts, sandwiches and drinking, you guessed it right -- beer of course, coffee being a distant second. Teenagers, workers, ladies, moms, granpas and even some grandmas, everyone is holding a can or a bottle of beer. I was even half ashamed when I went to get a cola (which occupied a small portion of the ref) when everyone else was getting a beer. My mind just goes "there are more time for beer, but not now". After a ... read more

Train trip Ingolstadt to Paris Arrived 1 ½ hrs late back to factory to drop car off at factory so this meant a little less time of sitting at the station. Our train wasn’t due to leave until 12.20am and we got to station at 8pm we found a locker to put our bags in and then we were going to find some where to look around and have dinner to fill in the time. Unfortunately where the station was there was nothing else except residential homes. We found a restaurant but I was not really hungry from our big lunch so we just walk two blocks and headed back to station where there was a café that had internet and food. Greg got something to eat and was about to enquire about the internet when ... read more
