We drove to Füssen several times while we were being in Bavaria. This small nice town was our shopping centre :-) Town is nice and as we noticed there are some interesting places and worthy to visit, but we really we hadn't enought time and goodwill to drive everywhere. The most interesting for me were some triskelions. These ones were black on the yellow background. Three combined legs I saw everywhere in the Isle of Man and I was nice surprised the Füssen's coat of arms is well known for me. ... read more

A lady from Japan and the girl from Korea and I got together to go check out the castle. We catch a bus up tp where the ticket office is then we had to catch another bus up to this bridge that has the most amazing view of the castle. It was the most beautiful thing I have seen thus far. I bought a small picture that a man had painted/drawn of the castle, he is very talented. The next part was to walk down a steep hill down to the castle, I am not looking forward to the walk back. The castle is really great on the outside but the inside is a work or art literally. Every inch of the walls are covered in some sort of art. It's sad that the king only ... read more

The homesick thing was hitting me hard the last 2 days. I did some thinking and decided not to go to Italy and Greece. I think it would make me really sad being in such romantic beautiful places without Aaron, as well I think it would be way to hot for me there during this time of year, it would be better to come back in the spring or fall. I have not yet decided what I am going to do with the extra days yet so where I end up with be a suprise to you as will be to me. I got on the train to Fussen feeling alittle sad and discouraged. Once the train got close to Fussen my spirit lifted a bit and was very glad I pushed on. Looking out the ... read more

First of all - the answer to our question from the Munich blog... Who said “ I could live on beer, pretzels and sausages forever!!!!” It was Lysh!! This coming from the girl who couldn’t even stand the smell of beer before we left! From Munich we drove on the A95 (yes the autobahn!) to Fussen. As you probably know there is no speed limit on the autobahns. We’ll just say that all 6 gears of our hire care were well used! Off the autobahn we passed some beautiful mountains, green countryside and lots of cows, forests (we saw a cute squirrel), rivers, a huge lake (Froggensee) and lots of little towns. We loved seeing all of the maypoles in the towns. Fussen is at the end of the romantic road (this name was given by ... read more

FUSSEN Day 38 Today I entered every little girl’s dream world, so much so that Disney modeled his famed castled after it. All it took was a two hour train ride to Fussen and then a 10minute bus to Schwangau, which is a small town near Austria. This castle is the imagination of one King Ludwig, aka. Crazy King Ludwig. He decided that he wanted a castle built in the theme and in dedication to his favourite opera writer Wagner. The castle, Neuschwanstein, is dually themed between Wagner’s stories and swans. Instead of getting an architect to design the building crazy Ludwig turned to a theatrical designer. Although the castle was not finished, due to Ludwig’s sudden death, the rooms that are completed are absolutely brilliant. Each completed room has fully painted wall panels that ... read more

28th March '09: A bit more on Neuschwanstein? OK, then - I’ll do all the travelling. You just put your feet up.. Maxine told us to have our barcodes ready as we milled about in the courtyard among a hundred other tourists. Ludwig II’s death rather halted construction of this castle; much of the edifice’s interior remains unfinished. The tour itself, then, is staggeringly brief and prohibits photography. Now, I don’t mind prohibiting flash photography, but no photographs at all? To me, that rather smacks of stinging the destitute traveller in the souvenir shop - one is forced to spend one’s hard-earned shitters on postcards. Or you can simply photograph the postcards, which I might have done in the last blog. Or, if you find ‘verboten’ (forbidden) is like a red rag to a bull, there ... read more

Our short visit to southern Germany turned out to be a mixed bag for us on this trip. We entered via Austria and made our way past some beautiful lakes towards the town of Fussen. Like everyone else, we went to the area to visit the famous Neuschwanstein Castles. This fairytale castle was apparently the inspiration for the castle at Disneyland! We really enjoyed our visit to the castles but were pretty devastated to find that the whole side of the castle was covered with scaffolding! Such a shame because the view from the swing bridge over the gully is amazing. Much better than the view you get from actually visiting the castle. Guttered - I had to buy postcards for my photo album this time! After finding all the camping grounds near Fussen to be ... read more

I knew this day would be long. Early wake up under the rain in Dornbirn, Austria, near the border with Swtizerland and Germany, only few miles north of Liechtenstein. We first had a serious breakfast at 7am before heading back on the road up north, than east in the direction of Fussen. No highways here, but rolling german roads bordering Austria. Nearly two hours later...and going closer to the sun...passing the little village of Fussen, we made it to the castles. Excuse me if we did not stop in Fussen itself, but our journey would not stop in Fussen today. I've been warned to arrive early...we may not have arrived early enough I guess. By 10am, the ticket queue was already a 20 minutes waiting affair....guess by 1pm it reached at least an hour....just to buy ... read more

Hi Everyone! Imagine back to a time before Germany became embroiled in two World Wars. Back to a time when Germany didn't even exist, when Bavaria had its own monarchy. Once upon a time there was a king of Bavaria named Ludwig. King’s Ludwig’s son Maximilian waited many years for his wife to give birth. When she finally did they were going to name their first born son Otto. But King Ludwig thought he should be named Ludwig, so in 1845 at Schloss Nymphenburg they named their first born ...Ludwig. Soon after little Ludwig was born, King Ludwig was forced to abdicate the thrown because of his womanizing ways. Bavaria was very Catholic at this time, and the people disapproved of King Ludwig parading his mistresses about. So Maximilian became the King. Unfortunately Max was never ... read more

Jon reminded me that I have no entry for Jennifer and my last day in Germany spent in Fussen/Schwangau in the region of Bavaria. Fussen is the town where The Neuschwanstein Castle of King Ludwig II is located. So after Jon got off to the airport in Frankfurt Jennifer and I got on the train to Munich where we transferred to another train which went on to Fussen. The change in the architecture of the houses was obvious as we travelled along the countryside. The houses were made of wood and had the long, brown windowboxes. Soon we started seeing the Alps. It was exciting to see how Jennifer who grew up with mountains around her was impressed by these very tall, big mountains so close to us. She was taking pictures and telling me to ... read more
