This day was going to involve quite a bit of driving and with the typically nasty weather of Southern Bavaria we couldn't be too sure what we might encounter. Making things a bit hairier was the fact that we had to get to Innsbruck (115 miles away) as early as possible because of the expected early store closings on New Year's Eve. When I put this itinerary together the only "must see" for Gail was getting some shopping time in the Innsbruck Swarovski crystal shop. We also knew from past experience that finding a place to eat dinner on New Year's Eve would be nigh onto impossible. Therefore I booked dinner months in advance at the touristy Werdenfelsner Hof restaurant a couple hours North on the opposite side of the Alps in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. When I booked ... read more

Dan and Ali came back to Germany with us from Arabba so on the way home we stopped and did some sightseeing. We stopped in Fussen to see Castle Neuschwanstein, which was actually the inspiration for the Cinderella Castle at Disneyland. It's absolutely incredible and is exactly what you think of when you picture a fairytale castle. The castle was built by King Ludwig II and wasn't begun until 1969. It took them 17 years to construct it and it was actually never finished because Ludwig was declared insane and died before he could complete it. The castle was meant as a dedication to the works of the composer, Richard Wagner, and his operas. We decided not to pay the 5 Euros per person to take the horse and carriage ride up to the castle and ... read more

Well stone me, I can hardly believe that this here is about to be my 300th blog entry! To everyone who has followed our adventures around the world, I'd like to say a huge big THANK YOU for all your support and many messages. With the impending move to NZ on the horizon, there will be plenty more to read about, I'm sure :-) Right, back to the business of my recent trip to Munich and Neuschwannstein Castle.... After our magical visit to the famous Neuschwannstein Castle yesterday, it was wonderful to have the morning greet us with clear blue skies and brilliant sunshine. We tucked into a tasty breakfast at our guest house and then donned our warmest clothes for a stroll around one of the nearby lakes and through the town of Fussen. We ... read more

So…like I said before, European hotels LIE about having internet access!! So here I am, already back from my trip…but I’m committed to finishing my blog. So here goes. On day 9, we picked up our rental car and sped to Bavaria Germany. When I say “sped,” I mean it!! We spent the morning on the autobahn, which Jeremy loved. I think our top speed was 125 mph, and even then, some of the other cars sped right by us like we were standing still. It wasn’t scary though - the roads are in really good condition, and if you don’t want to go crazy-fast you can just stay to the right. Several hours later we reached the site of two very famous castles: Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. Neuschwanstein was built by King Ludwig II as his ... read more

Hi all, The last week has been bloody full on. We are in the middle of a bit of a heat wave and the hay was ready so we got stuck into it. Friday to tuesday was flat out. While Franz and Peter cut I went around all the padocks and hand cut all the areas that the machines could not get to. Then I had to move it to where they could. It was not that hard but the heat was insane. Saturday and sunday were 40plus in the sun. No humidity however so that was a bonus. The first of the hay is brought in loose and dropped into one of 5 concrete cilos. From there I moved it with a remote operated crane over into the area were it is stored. While I ... read more

Hi everyone!! Oh my god! The last two weeks have been total shit weather wise. We have had it all rain, wind and even a big drop of snow on the hills. I was thinking I was having a crap time and then I get a email for mum telling what NZ has had to put up with! I hope it all comes good for you bloody quick. I hope that the surf has been cranking! It was supposed to be huge! Hamped did you get any waves? I am starting to hang out to get a wave.......maybe a small detour to southern Spain or Portugal is required before I head north. Last week I was in Austria again. I think that this was my fourth time down there. I would rather say up here! More ... read more

Hi all! Well the riding was a real eye opener! Not so much for the riding but for the dinking at 10am after we had finished! Every week one of the girls brings a different drink and after the ride they sit around and have a blast! It was wine day last wed, and this week it is Ramazzoti on the menu! I have been invited along again but I am not sure what Franz will think of that idea. He turned up at 11 expecting me to be working and I was sitting in the sun drinking bubbly! Ha!! I really did enjoy the riding. It was all pretty sweet actually. Everyboby said I was a natural! I will do more when I get a chance. Some of the girls do weekend rides so I ... read more

Yeehaa! I survived the friday night drink session. I was pretty rough the next morning but it was worth it! There was a little beer fest going on in town and we went along to that. It was great fun. Almost everyone that works or rides at the stables was out so there was plenty of drinking going on. Sometime during the evening when I was in a state of mild intoxication I agreed to a morning of riding this Wednesday. What the ....?! I have been told that the horse will be old and slow and my insurance will cover any broken bones. I am actually looking foward to it. How hard can it be! Funny story for you as well...
