Amber's Journal: I think today has been one of my favorite days of the trip so far. We spent a few minutes in Munich looking at Olympic Park then left to drive down the "Romantische Strasse" or Romantic Road, to Fussen. I think I was expecting it to be a little more exciting than it was but it was a fun drive through beautiful country and cute towns. It seems like everywhere we go it is so green and lush and beautiful. Anyways, we drove to Fussen and bought a ticket to see Neuschwanstein Castle (AKA the Disney Castle). It is perched on the cliff on a very high hill surrounded by mountains and it is enormous and very cool looking. Before you get to the castle there is a bridge called St. Mary's bridge that ... read more

May Day is the same as our Labor Day in the States. Therefore, everyone was out of work and many people were out and about. My attempt to wait out the weather was perfect as I woke up to a bright blue sky! I had a wonderful breakfast of selected cold cuts, cheeses, breads, 10 different jams & jellies, coffee, and something new... hot chocolate. I have read that I needed to try hot chocolate in Germany, and even more the closer I get to Belgium, and now I see why! It tastes like melted chocolate! Ahhhh.... After I get a large sugar buzz from all the chocolate, I think today would be a good day to see Bavaria at the finest, and I travel to Füssen to see the castle that was the inspiration for ... read more

King Ludwig, insanity and the fairy tale castle Fussen is like a fairy tale. And the castle you might recognize the Neuschwanstein is actually what the Disney castle is modeled off. So me and Nadia caught a train there early on the morning of December 23, 2008. I could not find my phone anywhere and we were trying to contact Linda to get it off her. Nadia was even contemplating taking the train back to meet her. Luckily we decided against the idea as Linda messaged us when she got up. I messaged her to ask if she could leave my phone at reception and I didn’t get a response so I hoped she would… But the ride to Fussen was like a fairytale. The scenery got more and more mountainous and snow started to appear ... read more

This past weekend Jason had a 3 day weekend thanks to the celebration of the Immaculate Conception in Italy. We decided to drive up to Fussen Germany for a little pre-Christmas cheer. Germany is known for its huge Christmas markets and we were excited to see a little snow in the mountains and explore the castles of Fussen. We left right after my pasta making class on Friday and drove straight through for 5 hours to Fussen. The end of the drive was actually quite scary as we drove through the curvy mountain roads of Austria in the dark and fog. I don't know what we would do without our GPS! We made it safely and arrived at our hotel, Hotel Sonne right in the center of Fussen. Fussen is a cute little German town with ... read more

Tonight we are writing from in our car beside the lake near Fussen watching another thunder storm - so much for summer weather! We packed up camp this morning in Munich and decided to head into the city centre - ummm....yip, that was another mission - you see the Germans, besides driving fast and being a kind-of rude race of people, like to have signs spontaneously along stretches of road which seems to stop when you get to an important intersection. So you start following signs to the ‘zentrum’ and then all of a sudden you’re lost in who-knows-where with not a single sign stating ‘zentrum’ (centre). We did manage to find an internet cafe though - and after two attempts and using their computers we hooked our laptop up and updated some more of our ... read more

Geo: 47.5839, 10.7062Getting sick of the same old breakfast, I changed things up today by mixing some chocolate cereal in with my muesli and yogurt. Mmmm ... I think we have a winner! They also had some really good buns, with some type of yummy nuts sprinkled on top. The speck ham was terrible - give me Italian prosciutto, any day! But maybe if I made a sandwich with Speck and chocolate cereal ... Again, it's pretty annoying that the reception desk isn't always staffed - it's a pain in the butt, especially first thing in the morning when you're trying to check out! I had hoped to use the nearby internet cafe before leaving for Fussen, but it wasn't open yet. It was already getting hot - going to be another scorcher today.I picked up ... read more

Geo: 47.5839, 10.7062Same ol' breakfast that I've seemingly had for an eternity now, and then off to Neuschwanstein, Mad King Ludwig's famous castle that was the inspiration for Cinderella's Castle in Disneyland. As I walked to the bus stop, I found out the name of the cutest kid from the group that tried to lock me in the laundry room yesterday night - Ziggy! He was traveling with his mother and three other brothers - I felt sorry for her, because that must be a lot of work! The bus timing was terrible - I had to catch an early bus otherwise I would've missed my 10:45 entrance time to Hohenschwangau, the less famous of the two castles I would be seeing today. I arrived significantly before the allotted time. With so much time to kill, ... read more

Here's installment #2 of my latest vacation! Monday March 17, we took a train from Salzburg to Füssen, Germany. We got to the little town of Füssen. It was raining. We found the tourist information office to find a place to stay. There was a youth hostel, but check-in time was not until five. We had about four hours to do nothing in the rain. Since we were in Budapest, I had wanted to buy some cool European boots. Finally, I did just that. It is a good thing I did too, because it started snowing soon after. When it was time, we went to get rooms. After settling in, we went to a Chinese restaurant. Ordering Chinese food in German is quite difficult. When we got back to the hostel (which by the way, was ... read more

Another New Year and one last chance to enjoy German hospitality, food and beer. Too bad that this is a holiday and not many places are expected to be open for business. Nevertheless we got out of bed before nine primarily because we had booked this particular place due of its location and buffet breakfast. The breakfast room was indeed huge and there were a number of tables with breakfast foods. But compared to many of the smaller Zimmer Freis and Gasthofs we had stayed in, this was a slight disappointment. I was happy to build a nice meat and cheese sandwich on one of those typical German hard rolls, but no soft-boiled eggs, bacon or orange juice. The cereal- eaters were well-taken care of, but I had been hoping to pig out at breakfast, ... read more
