Is this a good excuse for not writing in a while? Welcome back to the travel blog family and friends! And please welcome our boy! What a joy he is. He is a big guy, too. Born over 4 kilograms and over 2 feet! We have really enjoyed him and are enjoying a visit from his grandparents, too! Have a safe and blessed end of the year and or merry Christmas! ... read more

Again, I will apologise in advance. Zac has informed me that my blog is very “dry”. Not sure what I’m supposed to do to wet it up. There’s a glass of Polish vodka sitting next to me, but that wouldn't do my computer any good. After Mum’s concerns that we would be sharing our sleeper compartment with an axe-murderer/drunk/weirdo/all-of-the-above, we had a much smoother trip on the train, mainly because we were sharing with such an on-the-ball Polish lady. So, we managed to get off the train without the same mad scramble as last time. Mum and I found our way to the hotel by subway, and went for a wander around the local area (hmmm… wandering seems to be a common theme….). Finding ourselves in a much larger city, we felt a bit overwhelmed by ... read more

I've got probably 10 blogs that I need to catch up on but I just had to tell you all about our ice cream man. He comes around every day between 7:30 and 8:00 in the evening in his little truck playing typical ice cream truck music. He's from Italy...Sicily to be exact. He speaks a little bit of English but speaks fluent German and Italian so our conversations are a mix of all three these days. I'm sure you've heard me talk very highly about Italian ice cream...gelato. Well, what he sells in the truck is pretty close :) Once I found that out I became a pretty regular customer and I'm now greeted with a 'Ciao Bella!' when I come out. It's €1.70 for two scoops in a cone and the past few times ... read more

It couldn't have been better weather for an April wedding in Germany. Lots of sunshine, great food, and a bride and groom dressed to impress! We had our ceremony at the Maratim Hotel in Mannheim and the party at the Rhein Terressa right on the Rhein river very close to our apartment. Not only were we blessed with a great wedding but also with so many wonderful guests. Being so far away from home, I was extremely lucky to have my parents, a few local friends, and my old pal Jamie from Natick. All photos in this entry are taken by Burkhard Weineck. ... read more

Not only am I thrilled with our new apartment, I am very excited about the park 5 minutes away. Directly on the Rhein River, this quiet park features bike trails, horse trails, walking trails, and in the summer, an outdoor beer garden. We came down here for New Years Eve and watched people light off fireworks. ... read more

Although Köln is where it is at in Germany for Fassnacht (Mardi Gras), other cities have their own celebration. The city of Mannheim takes turns with Ludwigshafen and this year, Mannheim was the host. It is pretty much like every other festival in Mannheim: ie, The Fall festival, Christmas Market, Spring Festival, Festival festival... except it extends down through the Stroh Markt. It is basically like Halloween, in terms of people getting dressed up but what makes it special is that their are clubs that people join to plan beer tents. Each club has their own beer tent. ... read more
