Pirou Normandy 28thSept 2015 Oyster farming is the main source of excitement here. Where the tides rise and fall by as much as 13 meters oyster farmers have scores of acres of racks for cultivating oysters. You could say those racks are on the beach. Well the beach is several kilometres wide. But by mid tide those racks are under water. Its a significant industry with probably over a dozen teams of workers in attendance – each with a tractor and various machinery. It looked reasonably rewarding if the quality and size of the late model tractors was anything to go by. We visited soon after the equinox and just after a full moon. So the tide range was at its extremity. There are rocky areas that were exposed on the day of our visit. These ... read more

Notre dernier but : aller jusqu'à Etretat car faudra bien rentrer pour mercredi soir...

Audeville and Cherbourg Normandy 24th to 26th Sept 2015 Auderville Like Land’s End – Audeville is out on the tip of a peninsula. Windswept the day we were there and rugged – simple and untamed. Cherbourg Cherbourg – now a big industrial city with many modern buildings and perhaps more high rise than most parts of France. Nothing much over 12 storeys even here. With an artificial harbour dating back many centuries, Cherbourg is an important sea port. In WWII it was re taken by allied forces and became vital supply chain link when an oil pipeline was laid from England. Now the harbour has a cruise ship terminal and ferries going to a number of UK and Irish ports. Also the port area houses a museum devoted to submariners and ... read more

Bénédictine : un régal ... read more

Bonsoir mon ami The drive down to the ferry was not without its problems . We kept hitting queues which seemed to be linked not with roadworks but with junctions where vehicles were leaving heading for Cambridge. We decided after three of these holdups that this was not the most auspicious of routes. Next year – well next year who knows what we will do but it will not include Peterborough as as starting off point. We had had a fairly cold night but then we are a week later travelling. We expected a quiet run at this time but it was not to be . The M11 was fluid but a mist hung in the air clinging to the trees and houses. Certainly an Autumnal nip in the air. I had missed breakfast due to ... read more

Oh dear. Just discovered that according to our last blog, from June 28th, we are still wandering round France heading homewards but never quite getting there. I am happy to report we did make it home after a one night stop at our favourite aire at Le Crotoy (where we had a prime seaview spot so were extremely happy). We even managed to get to England via the Chunnel between closures because of migrants and then ferry worker fires. Once home we’ve had a very pleasant 2 months of English summer including a 3 day camping trip in Stratford with sister Liz and cousin Denise, as we’ve done now for the last 3 years. We’ve seen all our children (5) and grandchildren (11 including Bob’s 2 greats). We’ve enjoyed our newly worked back garden which ... read more

France...what a delight! I finally decided to do some driving! Originally I thought it would be 30/70 split but since we arrived in Europe I haven't done any so 3/97 is probably more reasonable. Naturally I have been back seat driving the whole time we have been on the road so driving on the right wasn't too hard. It also helped I was pretty much on highways and quiet roads the whole time so no need to freak out until I have to give way to the right. It's a stupid rule the French have and sometimes they do it and sometimes they don't. For example if you are on a round about then the person on the round about stops, mid turn, and gives way to the person entering the round about, the Arc de ... read more

Tandy was rocked by wind last night then hammered with rain but it seems to have got it out of its system as all ok again when we got up, quite early as we had a train to catch. Fortunate we were in plenty of time as we discovered there were 2 more Irish traveller caravans, which had arrived late last night and been barred entry, parked outside the gate blocking it. Oops. They were ‘persuaded’ to let us out. Not a pleasant experience we would willingly choose to repeat. Got to the Chunnel in excellent time and boarded an earlier train than booked. In France by 10am or 11am after we’d adjusted our watches. Easy drive down through the massive arable fields of Normandy. Such a pleasure to drive on roads which are not clogged ... read more

After arriving late in Paris we got transport to go to our hotel which was an hour drive away from the airport. Very tired we had to wait for the room to be ready but a coffee helped with the waiting. For the next three days we had the city of Paris for ourselves. Lots to see although we have been there several times. But Paris is Paris and has it's romantic moments. For us well we love Paris. That night we enjoyed a meal at the place we always go. Beef Tartar is the dish I go for Liz is not so for raw meat but with some salt and pepper, you can't have any better. Next day we went to the Notre Dame but not to see the church but for a chapel behind ... read more

Europe » France » Upper Normandy » Giverny May 20th 2015

We were up early this morning for another big driving day and because we wanted to reach Giverny in time to see Monet's garden. We were down in the dining room by 7.00am, having breakfast with all the business people, checked out and on the road by just after 8.00am. We set the Sat-Nav for Giverny and off we headed up the A6 towards Paris. With our road map of Southern France about to run out at just north of Macon we stopped at the Aire (services) stop at Macon for a toilet break and stretch. Bernie was prepared to just trust the Sat-Nav, but I wanted to buy a map just to be able to see where we were actually travelling. We were able to purchase a map of all of France, but the scale ... read more
