Starting with a quick heads up before getting into everything. While I love that people are reading what I have to say, I’m actually more so writing everything as a way to retain the wonderful memories I’m living. So if it ever seems as if I’m ranting on about things that are either uninteresting, strange, unrelated, please just bare with me or skip a bit (it won’t hurt my feelings (unless you’re related to me!) In other words, this post is long. Enjoy! The last time I wrote something I was being rapidly propelled across the French countryside in a T.G.V (Train à grand vitesse (a.k.a really fast train (the French are known for acronyms, not creativity))) on my way back to Dieppe from a weekend in Paris. Well I’m still traveling, though this time by ... read more

Steady rain greeted us this morning as we woke up gradually, and it combined with the slow sloshing of water over the mill wheel to slow our pace. At breakfast we met a lady who had already been up and out to the gardens as part of a photography course she is doing. We were flat out making it down in time to eat! After breakfast it was time for a trip to the police station, and THAT was a hoot. There was absolutely no-one on duty who spoke English, so I found myself acting out a charade and hanging on to Frank as if I was on the back of a motorbike - sound effects included, much to the children's mortification. Isabel had to leave the room. Unfortunately I didn't have a knife with me ... read more

The armada of Rouen, every 4 or 5 years, gather a lot of ships coming from all the world. This year, from Russia, France, Brasil, Poland, Mexico, Sweden, The netherlands, The united kingdom, Bulgaria, Portugal, Oman, and Germany. That's the worst time to visit Rouen due to the mass of people in the city, you can't drive, you can't park, you can't ride bike...Paris it's a ghost city compared to Rouen during Armada ! So, be prepare ! But, if you like ships, especially, the old ones, that's the best moment ! The ships are just amazing, really huge. At first, it seems like toys, because you can't realize the fact that ships were like this before ! So much cordons everywhere, huge voiles, and...made in woods ! The city offers free water, but if you ... read more

Hey everyone! I’m currently on a TGV heading back to Dieppe with nothing to do, so I thought I’d write a quick sum up of the week as a way to pass the time! First off, I mentioned some disciplinary issues in my last post with Zoé (6). Well, the combined efforts of all (though mostly her) seem to have paid off. She was an angel for the rest of the week and I now owe her ice cream. Which is great, seeing as how I just got done spending a ton of money in Paris. Let’s see… Until now, I’ve been bonding with Augustin (8) via our mutual and profound love for Pokémon. He just loves having someone to talk to about it in the house and I not only love the subject (10 year ... read more

I bought train tickets to Rouen for us in advance, but Luda was unable to accompany me because of sickness, and it was such a happy coincidence, as we'll shortly see. This time Luda made for me some sandwiches, which we found to be an excellent way of sustenance, tasty, cheap, and fast. The train was due to depart at 10.40 or so, but when I came to Gare St. Lazare and observed the information display, a feeling crept all over me that something went wrong, because there were captions “retard indefinit” – we can translate the second word, and deduce the meaning of the first one, ‘delayed indefinitely’: meaning that train would not depart for an unknown amount of time, maybe an hour, maybe two, maybe three… There were public address notifications delivered in French ... read more

Hey everyone! Been a couple weeks since I last posted something so I thought I’d drop a quick word. Life has been pretty easy going here. We’ve kind of been finding out where we stand in the family and getting to know everyone better. At first we had a harder time talking to Laure, the mom, because she’s not quite as charismatic as Guillaume is, but seeing as how we only see Guillaume on the weekends and we’re always with Laure, that has quickly changed. So much so that we actually meet her for her lunch break once a week and grab a bite to eat! As for the rest of the family, we’re getting along great with everyone, though we’ve had some discipline issues with Zoé. She just doesn’t quite understand what no means and ... read more

LE HAVRE TO BREUIL TO HONFLEUR, FRANCE The day was overcast with the threat of rain. I carried the Holland America provided umbrella with me, but I never needed it. The short ride to the first stop was through the countryside and fields of canola (for the oil) and livestock were abundant. Most intersections the bus navigated were roundabouts, very popular around here. The name of my tour was “A taste of Normandy: Cheese and Cider”. Normandy is famous for Calvados - its superb apple brandy. I visited the Chateau du Breuil for a tour of its distillery and a taste of its calvados and its aperitif Pommeau and some of its cheeses. The chateau was built in the 16th and 17th centuries and the former home of various noble families. The cider was especially good ... read more

CHERBOURG TO THE D DAY BEACHES The sun was shining brightly but the temperature was cool. I boarded the bus early since the tour was scheduled for nine hours and I had to be back on board at 5:30. My time in Cherbourg was only a drive through on the way to Arromanches, a modest sea side resort which is where the British forces landed at Gold Beach on June 6, 1944. I only missed the 69th anniversary by a little more than a week. There is a Museum with good films and displays which explain the immense operation to free Europe. Some of the man made port so vital to the success of the invasion remain on the beach. It was very thought provoking to walk on the beach where so many had died in ... read more

This week has been a barrage of different emotions! It started out with both of us adjusting not only to the time difference, but also to speaking French all the time. If you haven’t ever been in a similar scenario, just think of it this way. You’d be tired if you walked/jogged around all day, right? Your body would be exhausted! Well that’s what the first couple days were like for us mentally. We were always tired and there were a few times when we just had to crawl into a corner and watch senseless reality television. Rachel had super intelligent phrasing for what we were doing, but I’m just gonna say that my brain needed a confidence booster and voilà, there it was in the form of Hell’s Kitchen. So we got here and temporarily ... read more
