Thank goodness weather forecast was right. Drop dead glorious day with wall to wall blue sky and sunshine. Perfect for a Kisbee trip up the lake 10km to Annecy. Annecy was heaving with people. This is an out of season Tuesday. Wonder how busy it is in summer ? Still room for us though in the wonderful little paths along the canal, across the bridges full of colourful market stalls, everywhere so beautifully decorated with flowers so every sight is a delight to the eyes. We stopped for a coffee and a people watch then carried on strolling, past the superbly ornate shop fronts, mouth watering displays in the delicatessens. We’ve been here before and returning somewhere you’ve enjoyed can be a disappointment but not in this case, even better than we remembered it. We went ... read more

Today’s travel blog is brief. Weather forecast had promised overcast and overcast is what we got. A shame as a drive through the Jura to the Alpine foothills would be stunning on a sunny day but nothing like as much so when all mountain, and even hill tops, were covered by low cloud and quite a bit of drizzle though that eased off as we went on our way. Oddly enough it rained last time we drove to Annecy, from Chamonix in June 2011 so we missed the scenery that day too. Still a pleasant enough drive and at least it wasn’t torrential rain this time just a lot of drizzle which obscured the view and messed up most chances of a decent photo through the windscreen as we drove along. We chose to stay at ... read more

Just when you thought you knew where we were :) we have moved to France, Murray is working in Geneva, Switzerland. But you know, it's a bit cheaper the french side of the border. So there you go. The kids school is also in Switzerland. For this kiwi crossing the border so frequently still messes with my mind, and it seems also with my mobile phone :( I seem to be constantly "roaming". So we came from Kenya, to a house we found back in our April trip. What a relief. The anxiety the apartment in Ferney used to give me was completely washed away. The weather was beautiful, views of Mont Blanc and the Jura all from our property. A farm at our back fence, complete with cows with bells, how very Swiss. Late evening ... read more

Europe » France » Rhône-Alpes » Lyon September 4th 2016

Lyon Last night we arrived in Lyon after dark. It is an exceptional pretty town to sail into by night. There are new unusual buildings fully lit up in different colours. Also as you look up to the hills all the old buildings are beautifully lit with the cathedral at the top being the crowning glory. Lyon lays at the point where the Rhone river and the Soane river converge or as the say confluence. It has a long and distinguished history for silk and textile making and is known as the world’s leading centre of textile design. We went on the usual walking tour with a guide for an overview and to hear a brief history. First stop in the morning was the famous food market Le Halles who famous patron is Paul Bacuse the ... read more

ss Catherine – Rhone River – Burgundy Woke up this morning to the twin towns of Turnon-sur-Rhone and Tain l' Heritage. They are across the river from each other but connected by the two first suspension bridges built in Europe and before the Golden Gate Bridge. The twisting wire process was developed for these. We were guided through the small town of Turnon sur Rhone a cute medieval village. With castle cathedral and the cobbled streets. Funny thing on our walk we came across large windows looking into a spotless high tech workshop with mostly Asian people making dentures and bridges etc. It looked weirdly out of place in the old villages but obviously was making work for the locals. The guides like to talk about their socialist country. They are proud of the free health ... read more

SS Catherine – Rhone River – Provence Well, today is Wednesday, day three, and I’ve just sat down in the Leopard bar with a glass of Rose’ about the hundredth glass of Rose. When in Rome! The French seem to drink Rose’ for breakfast. We are enjoying our little bit of luxury very much. The boat is beautiful; it exceeds the photos. The service is amazing, nothing is too much trouble. The food is better than ever. We were well pleased to have covered the Popes Palace and Avignon before boarding as we were able to take advantage of other options for our excursions. On Monday after lunch we went with 15 others on the bus for an hour and arrived at the river Gardon. After the safety briefing we were all into Kayaks for the ... read more

Woolly says – Having waved goodbye to my tusk eating friend all we needed to do was catch our next bus...... if we could find it! Arriving in good time I left the girls getting our morning croissants and trotted to the information area to check where we should go, armed with a piece of paper I lead the way to the front of the train station and looked around, lots of bus stops, seemed like the right place! It wasn’t, having asked again we were directed 500 metres further down the road where there were no bus stops...... Woolly says – Taking the initiative I popped into a café and asked again only to be redirected back to the bus stops! ........Back we went and I went and asked at another café, nope we needed ... read more

Hi all – the trip reporter is a bit behind schedule but not to worry as that is what happens when you are on a busy trip. Have finally got around to doing the Morzine update - enjoy! Well the amazing trip continues with all the kids and parents doing a great job of adapting to a new time zone, very warm weather, new food, different beds, lots of walking and driving as well as travelling via gondolas and chairlifts – so much in a short period of time. After our early departure from Bristol in the UK we all arrived in Geneva, collected hire cars and drove to Morzine in the French Alps. Carla waited a little longer for Breny’s flight to arrive from Australia and Liam had a lovely surprise to see his dad. ... read more

Europe » France » Rhône-Alpes » Lyon July 14th 2016

Tuesday 12 July 2016 Rain poured for most of our northbound journey. Neville welcomed the planned stop at Lyon. This stop was extremely significant for Mabel. Her only brother, Lyon, was named after this city. Her father, Sgt Wesley Charles Rivers Taylor, had travelled by train through France from Marseilles in 1916. After his time in Gallipoli he wrote the following in his diary: Thursday 30th March 1916 Arrived Marseilles 7 oclock. I am in love with France Friday 31st March 1916 Left the Briton at 8.30 & entrained an hour later Saturday 1st April 1916 Stunned by the beauty of France Sunday 2nd April 1916 We have been travelling for 26 hours. It is glorious. Hot tea is waiting for us at every main station. I am writing this on Les Laumes. (Venarey-les-Laumes is in ... read more
