As I mentioned at the end of the last blog, Lyon is essentially the end of my visit to France (and Germany). After visiting so many great places and seeing so many stunning things, it was always going to be hard to get motivated here. 4 weeks is usually about my limit, and I like to go away for a bit longer than that so I’m keen to go home when the time comes. On Saturday morning, after having breakfast at the hotel, I returned to my room and went back to bed. I did eventually get up, but there were only a couple of things I really wanted to see in Lyon so I decided to put them off to Sunday. Instead, I headed out with my camera and just went for a walk. It ... read more

July 26 - 27 Our second day in Lyon we had signed up for a guided walk through passageways called traboule in the afternoon so took the morning to go to the St. Jean Baptiste Cathedral which is located in the historic district of Lyon. This Cathedral is known as the primary seat and home of the Church of France. It was built between the 12th and 15th C. in what is known as the oldest Christian city in France. It has a much different look from other Cathedrals that we have seen further north in France with their soaring heights and were informed its style is influenced from Italy. When you enter the Cathedral you notice the wonderful stained glass rose windows which we learned are from the 13th & 14th C. The Cathedral has ... read more

We left Chalon-sur-Saone at 7:30AM and had a very pleasant trip on the Saone River stopping in Macon at 1:50PM – a short day with only going through one lock today, but we did have to wait for a while to let a commercial barge go through first. This always adds a dimension to the calculations when trying to figure where to stop for the night. Fortunately with a short day planned we had plenty of “fudge” time. Today we saw plenty of swans as usual, but this time we saw a black swan which we hadn’t seen before while in France. There were also two pairs of storks spotted in the trees at their nests. We always try to keep our eyes open for wildlife sightings wherever we are. Even though we are on the ... read more

Realmente, a comida lá é deliciosa. Acredito que uma das características da culinária francesa – e que a torna tão saborosa – é o uso intensivo de gordura animal (boi ou porco), manteiga e creme de leite. E aqui cabe um parêntese. Por ... read more

July 21 We almost missed today. Sinclaire, fortunately, was up and ready to go. At 10 am she woke us up. We took a walk to Les Halles de Paul Beaucuse – the most amazing market with fish vendors, meat vendors, cheese…and the most amazing pastries. We stopped for lunch at a fish restaurant. Sinclaire had escargot, I had salmon tartar, Glenn had oysters. Mmmmm… check out the food photos! A short walk to Old Lyon brought us to the funiculaire. The short ride up the hill was worth the three Euros. At the top is the Basilique – super old church…but not as old as the roman theatre, made around 200 A.D. Dinner was a La Maison Marie. She's the owner - her husband is a tennis expert.... read more

Monday 17 - Thursday 20 July Archamps, France Today is a very special day - it is my demi-birthday!! I am 6 months old today. As you will see, it was a pretty special day, but I have to tell you that I spent parts of this day in three (3) different countries (Holland, Switzerland & France), sat in my first high chair and played for the first time in a cot. How cool is that!!! I also played in a pool for a little while, but that was a bit frightening ... Travelling on trains and planes is now quite a familiar process for me. I don't have to do much, whilst mummy and daddy do all sorts of bag juggling and paper shuffling. Today was going to be a bit different, because it is ... read more

No TMB talk. No quiz. No musings. Just plain fun and one great buzz. Up the cable car to Plan Praz again accompanied by our pilots and a couple of super sized packs. Sure a few Euros lighter but keen and enthusiastic to join those we have seen soaring in the skies. Very little routine to follow, the pilots roll out the gliders, harness us and themselves in and tell us to run off the side of the mountain. That's it, just run and keep running. Strange but that's what I did. I didn't regard the scenario as dangerous and within a minute we were gliding and soaring and turning with the currents and it was FANTASTIC. From take off we gain almost 500 m to the height of The Brevent (sorry TMB talk) soar over ... read more

OK. I know there have been no quizzes for the blog and I don't know if I'm going soft or listening to all of you that have pleaded for an end to quiz time but today it's me that will attempt to answer all the big questions. Here goes. Can you have too much gelati? Even after a little too much fondue, perhaps a beer too many and even only a little walk the answer remains no. The flavours here are excellent, very crisp and very refreshing so really very little debate, no. Are hotel bar fridges specifically designed not to fit bottles purchased at the market? I moved a dozen cans and only just, just managed to fit 3 bottles in their place and even that meant placing them careful and diagonally and being very ... read more

After a delightful stay in Argentiere we caught the bus back to Tre du Champ to commence the walk to Chamonix. Absolutely delightful scenery as Mt Blanc dominates the panarama. We Tom The variant to L'acqua Blanc an absolutely picture postcard spot perched high in the mountains. We shared it with half of France judging by the crowd. It was Sunday and the the Bastille Day weekend but we could not believe the number of people there. And believe me there's no easy way to get there. Then off to the Refuge La Flegere, still almost 1900 m up but served with a chair lift so easier to understand how people may get there. Here I checked the time for the last chairlift into Chamonix from our next destination. Time 4:10. Last chair 6:00 Time to ... read more

Just as happy to take the chair lift up as we where to take it down last night. Up to 2500 m to Le Brevent. Again spectacular views over Mt Blanc and over the glacial mouths that emerge from the mountains nearby. The sky was abuzz with hang gliders and kites that soared around us most of the day. They hover, soar, dip, glide but look so serene and peaceful. Really quite amazing. All downhill today (from 2500 m that should not be a big surprise!) which can be tough on knees and as some sections require ladders and steel rope and lots have stones, stones, stones underfoot care is certainly demanded even when you think you've nearly finished. Last Refuge (Bellechat) and unbelievably no icy poles (not so unbelievable really), last significant landmark (Le Christ ... read more
