Welcome to Annecy...NOT!! A long long train ride over 6.5 hrs in total time! We are tired, we are dizzy with the sway of the train, we arrive....I ask nicely for directions...I get a map shoved in my face and a slammed window in my face!! Oh so not a good start! Next..we think, we shall go outside the train station....Pardon Monsieur, excusez -moi se il vous plait..got a resounding shake of the head, well merry damn christmas to you too! So not a good start Annecy....rudeness does not go down to well, but is it total rudeness or total indifference. I really haven't struck any arrogant or rude French until now, but in Dijon, we were warned by the staff at the hotel to be aware. It seems that Annecy, with all its beauty & ... read more

Landed back from Singapore on this morning of the 2nd of July, quick jaunt back to my house in London to unpack, washings on, have a siesta for couple hours then repack and off I go again - this time I'm away to France for a few days to meet my family who are out there for two weeks. I do sometimes terrify myself at how much I can power on, literally don't know what time zone I live off anymore. So flew to Geneva, had my fave Bloody Mary on the plane to keep me going! My dad kept telling me to make sure that I went out at the French side of the airport at Geneva, so I did as requested only for him then to call me and say sorry actually need to ... read more

France certainly wins out with the choice of mountainous areas compared to many other European countries, there are nine in total including Corsica. So where to start? Well, having done my research, and always liking variety in life, I plumped for the Haute-Savoie region, the capital being the delightful lakeside town of Annecy. In this area you get three for the price of one as it also borders Italy and Switzerland so as well as the fabulous dramatic scenery you get a wonderful variety of different cuisines and wines - a very important consideration after an energetic day scaling the numerous mountain paths. This region is also extremely well organised for the visitor and has an excellent tourist infrastructure. There are connections between the main towns by train and bus. Searching for information on the montain ... read more

When we visited the Gorges de la Diosaz () they had some leaflets on a number of other things to do and one of those was a Segway tour of a nearby place called Annecy, so we thought we would give that go today. For anyone who doesn't know, they are basically motorised, self-balancing one-man, two-wheeled vehicles that control by leaning forward or backward, and steer by pushing the handlebar to the left or right. They were easier to get to grips with than we were expecting, so after a short practice we were ready to go. We had booked a sixty minute tour, but when we got there, there was a problem with one of the vehicles, so we had to wait a couple of hours for a later tour that had some spaces. That ... read more

I'm having trouble getting this entry going here, somewhat like this morning: when you start the day with a 6km climb directly from the hotel, there's little opportunity to warm up. Fortunately the grade wasn't outrageous - an average of 5.1% and a maximum of 6.5% - but I still felt stupid after realizing at km 4 that I should have removed my helmet for the ascent and been that much cooler, since the sun was out and it was already quite warm. I felt cheated not being able to get a photo at the top (there was no sign, and the area was wooded), so I had to settle for something on the other side. Today's route choices were a rather pedestrian jaunt direct to Annecy, the path I will describe here, and a more ... read more

Apologies for the title but a town with a name like Annecy invites all sorts of ugly puns so if a couple more slip out don't go getting all "antsy" with me. Anybody out there still reading? Just arriving here caused a few raised eyebrows. Our first TGV and I don't know how fast they go but it's quick. The French countryside slips by in a blur. Close your eyes and you'd swear you were deaf. Minimal noise, minimal motion inside the carriage and you arrive 550 klms from Paris in a flash and a whisper. Wake up Oz and give us decent rail links. Vote 1: G. Yeates for a better rails system. Off the soapbox, off the train and the headlines read: "Hitman Style Assassination. 5 Shot Dead in Annecy". Penny: "Nice place you've ... read more

So for those of you who have no interest in cycling I'm afraid this entry (and the next couple) are going to be a bit boring for you. I am just over one week into my travels and into the Le Tour de France and let me tell you it has been an awesome week. In following the TDF I am driving for the first ten days by myself and then join a group after that to finish it off. I think I my have under estimated how difficult the driving would be. Funnily enough it's not driving on the right side of the road or the left side of the car (it only took me 3 days to stop reaching for the gear stick on my left!!) it's having no idea where I am going ... read more

I have moved further into the Rhône-Alps region and planted myself in what I assume would be considered the foothills of those enormous and somewhat daunting peaks. My village of choice, Annecy has the best of both worlds: slow flowing rivers crisscross the old town leaving old buildings to open right on the water and after losing yourself in the very medieval-feeling alleyways you exit back out into the sunlight right smackdab on the edge of a lake. You're at the head of a valley and further on to either side mountains rise, their tops covered in pure, untouched snow. I chose to take advantage of the fine, sunny weather we've been having (currently no freakish storms) and took myself on a little hike up around the hills on the lake. Yes, me, the self-proclaimed city ... read more

Hi All We decided to stay at Beaune, the winery capital of the Burgundy region. Our hotel was a 15 minute walk from the centre of town - always the most interesting part of any town we have visited so far. Sean visited a medieval hospital that is currently being used as an old people’s home. I was shopping for clothes, and didn’t realise that was where he was - apparently they have some interesting surgical instruments on display from the 16th century. We stayed in Beaune for 3 days and decided to visit some Chateaux on the Route des Ducs de Bourgogne, not realising the ones we wanted to see involved a 360km round trip. Luckily we checked on the internet and found the good ones were closed on Monday and Tuesday (not mentioned in ... read more

Wonderful. When we woke we could see patches of blue in the sky above our heads, first we had seen in 4 days. Had a lovely ride out on the scooter, south down the lake to the bottom and then heading up the other, the East side. Stopped several times just to admire the lovely clear turquoise water of the lake and wonder why the fishermen were standing fishing when however hard we try we have totally failed to spot any sort of fish in the water. Ducks cruise past every now and then and we think this must be a pretty good lake on which to be a duck especially on a day like today with the sun shining brighter and brighter and the sky turning from grey to white to beautiful blue. Just the ... read more
