It’s been a gastronomic overload here in Annecy! It started on Monday lunch with duck confit followed by café and chocolate dessert. Usually, duck for lunch would have been no way and that would have lasted me through the night. But that was quickly intercepted. A glass of vin chaud led into raclette for dinner. Raclette is an amazing thing. It’s actually the name of a cheese. As a dish, a hemisphere cheese block is mounted on the device. The device has a heater that melts the cut section of the cheese. As the cheese melts, you scrape the melted, gooey, possibly with a bit of toasted surface, part onto a plate of potato and salami. Melted cheese tastes so milky and nice, it’s hard to let it just ooze without eating. I did my best ... read more

After we dropped my Mom off at the Paris airport, we jumped on a train and headed down to Dijon. Dijon is a sweet little town, the capital of the Burgundy region, with a lot of pride in its regional gifts; selling all sorts of yummy flavors of mustard and gingerbread, French lavender, and those little aniseed candies my cousin and I ate when we were young. The town mascot/symbol is the owl and they sold little owls all the souvenir shops, the bakeries sold owl shaped cookies, and the sidewalks had doormat-sized owl plaques indicating important sites. Our next stop was Lyon, where the town mascot/symbol is…the lion, as you can imagine. You just get a feeling in some towns, and I got it in Lyon. I loved Lyon. It’s the third largest city in ... read more

To start... yes, Mt. St. Michel is as fantastic as I was promised. Just to get that out of the way. So... when I last left off I was about to head back to Paris for a night. This time we got into Paris a little earlier than our first time. It was still pretty much nighttime, so we decided we might as well head over to the Eiffel Tower again. This time we did a little better though, and climbed the 400ft. up to the second floor (yes, that's right, we took the stairs). This would be one of the things the title refers to as not disappointing. The view was amazing - the whole city lit up for miles in front of us, sights like the Arc de Triomphe, Sacre-Couer, and Notre Dame were ... read more

The night train to get to Annecy was actually quite nice. We slept with a bunch of people from the older generation so we all went to bed early. Since I seem to be putting in random tidbits of advice I might as well provide you all with another one, book couchettes. They are worth the extra cost!! You actually get to lie horizontally, and fall asleep. This is much better than the awkward 15 minute snooze until your neck hurts then shift, and 15 minute snooze until your back hurts and you shift again - all night long. They even give out descent bedding, but they cheap out on the pillows. Some people seem to get away with stealing pillows (cough… Joshua… cough). We arrived in Annecy at seven in the morning, which was a ... read more

Actually, Annecy is the closest town. We had chosen a small B&B 15km west of Annecy in a place called Pezay. It was run by an English couple from Sussex who had moved out some 7 years previously. Having a pool made it popular with recent swimming-star, Asha. We dined the first evening with fellow-guests - an older English couple, who were out for a wedding, a Dutch couple and a French couple, meeting in the middle, him in Paris, her in Nice. It was a nice meal. The kids had been fed earlier, so it was more adult than we’d seen for a long time! With three nights in the area, we decided to have a visit to Lake Annecy on the first day. We drove in to Annecy and found our way to Moon ... read more

Hi everyone, Well it has been a true adventure so far. The wedding in Montpellier was amazing and I even sang the Mass parts plus two solos plus prepared the wedding bouquet for Agnes to walk down the aisle... so she really put my skills to work. Cheryl was here for a week and we managed to visit Montpellier centre, Carcassonne, Avignon, Pont du Gard, Nimes, and Arles all in that first week!!! Once she left I also visited Perouges and Vienne (France) before moving on to Lyon and now Annecy. I have taken so many photos already but will pare them down for my friends before any slide shows, don't worry :). Tomorrow a loooooong day of train travel to see Luxembourg for three days before re-entering northern France for Lille-two days, then off to ... read more

So Annecy started out quite badly, with us having to call all our reservations and try to push them back because the French train strike will keep us from heading out to Nice today, and with us wandering the town for a couple hours before finding our hostel on the top of a hill in the rain : However, after waking up, the city more than mde up for the bad start. Annecy is known as France’s Venice, due to its being built on the edge of a canal, and the comparison is pretty accurate. The buildings have the same colorful and crowded feeling on the edge of the water. However, the comparison is really only true for the part of town right on the canal. After that, it becomes more of a mountain/lake town like ... read more

I arrived in Annecy at 10am and dropped my bags off. I went straight back to the train station and bought a return bus ticket and ski pass for the ski resort "The Grand Bornand" in the French Alps, one hour from Annecy on the bus. The bus ride was very pleasant and scenic. I hired my skis from the town and headed up the mountain on the telecabines. I've only been skiing once before, and that was for three days more than four years ago, so understandably I was a little rusty. The slopes are divided into four levels of difficulty: green, blue, red and black from beginner to advanced. I took the closest green route I could find, and was doing ok, but I didn't realise that the green slope crossed a blue slope, ... read more
