This entry by Tom. Another day, another nice Kyriad hotel breakfast and temperatures hotter than the surface of the sun. On the news last night we found out that all this hot weather is blowing in from north Africa--so, the Sahara Desert. I had planned to ride over the Col du Grand Colombier today in part to make the descent through the Lacets du Grand Colombier and shoot some video of that. Learned about this stretch of road from watching the TdF a year or two ago and it looked pretty cool. But after two days in a row of 6+ hours on the bike in 30°C+ temps, I re-vectored and departed Bellegarde-sur-Valserine with Caroline on a short-cut route that bypassed the cols of the Jura and instead crossed the Génissiat dam on the Rhone river ... read more

Last time I'd promised to take you out of the Côte d'Azur and into another region of France. And so here we are, in Annecy! It's a two hour train ride from Lyon. After moving steadily in one direction, towards the end of the journey, the train suddenly changed course and started travelling backwards! It was rather alarming and a co-passenger even asked me if this train is indeed going to Annecy. I spent the last half hour or so sitting up straight in my seat waiting to discover that I'd boarded the wrong train. But with luck on my side, the train arrived at Gare d'Annecy thankfully. Anyway, to describe Annecy in one sentence, I'd say it's Venice's cousin. The little canalas and streams that run through the town, might make you think of Venice ... read more

Today’s travel blog is brief. Weather forecast had promised overcast and overcast is what we got. A shame as a drive through the Jura to the Alpine foothills would be stunning on a sunny day but nothing like as much so when all mountain, and even hill tops, were covered by low cloud and quite a bit of drizzle though that eased off as we went on our way. Oddly enough it rained last time we drove to Annecy, from Chamonix in June 2011 so we missed the scenery that day too. Still a pleasant enough drive and at least it wasn’t torrential rain this time just a lot of drizzle which obscured the view and messed up most chances of a decent photo through the windscreen as we drove along. We chose to stay at ... read more

Well we finally found some wifi to enter a blog. We left on Wednesday night at 22:00 and got to dover at about 02:00 on Thursday morning. The ferry left at 04:00, and after negotiating a very confusing (for me) route to the boat we boarded a very empty ferry, and we were off. Not before driving over our dustpan brush, which Fiona was pleased about as she now doesn't have to sweep out the van every evening. We landed at dunquerk at 07:00 and were making our way to Belgium, for fiona's fags, when we met our first unusual travellers. We were pulled into a layby to check our directions (a usual event for us) when there was a tap on the window. It was 2 first time would be baccy smugglers from Oldham, who ... read more

Monday 15 June 2015 We were sorry to be leaving our excellent hotel near Lyon today, large room, comfortable king size bed and a fridge. To find all these at the same time is most unusual with budget accommodation, and to be savoured. Still, we are off to see the mountains so leave we must. The first part of our journey to Annecy was through commercial and light industrial areas plus towns all strung together. The result was roundabout heaven for lovers of this method of traffic control. Centrifugal force can be tiresome after the first dozen or so times. Thankfully we eventually reached the real countryside and were soon driving through hilly farmland with many more trees. We were surprised to come across the Rhone River which also flows through Lyon, here much further upstream. ... read more

If you thought whitewater rafting was beyond your means, think again. Just a short flight away from northern Europe you can get the thrill of shooting the rapids for a fraction of the price of heading over to the Zambezi, Nile or Colorado rivers. A two hour drive from the major towns of Annecy, Grenoble, Chambery or even Geneva is the Tarentaise Valley formed by the River Isère. It offers more than 23 km of whitewater or “eau vive”, as it is called in French. A two and a half, to three hour downstream trip is less than €60.00. The difficulty varies from a class II to IV and the scenery is dramatic. If that’s not enough, and you want a bit more of a white-knuckle ride, try the Doron de Bozel. A tributary of the ... read more

Bonjour, We have had a tremendous time in France and spent many hours strolling through the streets of Annecy, learning about the town's rich history and indulging in the many pleasures that France has to offer. We have thoroughly enjoyed absorbing the atmosphere, admiring the views and the diversity that France has to offer. The time spent with family has been precious and extremely memorable. We have been fortunate enough to enjoy some sunny days, which will hopefully continue when we reach Venice, in time for Carnivale. Au Revoir, ... read more

France has one of the best social security systems, if not the best, in the world. Both blue and white collars workers get paid 6 weeks vacation time every year. So, in July and August most of the French people take their annual summer holidays and travel around the country. Since I wanted to avoid the summer rush I took a mini vacation in May, to Annecy a town in the Rhone-Alpes region, often referred to as "the Venice of France." As Annecy is only 130 kilometers (80 miles) away from Bourg-en-Bresse (the city where I lived in France) it took us less than 2 hours to cover that distance. We had an early summer that particular year in 2003. As a matter of fact, that year turned out to be the hottest summer in France ... read more

Ok, here we are again.... Last day in Annecy, and well, the place decided to shine brightly..kinda like a diamond...it really was stunning, and the city turned on all its charms for our final day, also we celebrated our anniversary here, as was always intended, so the day was just that added extra special. Surprisingly, today was the only day in which we found a place advertising....Anglo Saxon breakfast..yep, scrambled eggs & bacon, orange juice and a great coffee! (full strength)! It was fantastic, and just what we needed to brighten the day up. We wandered through the park lands around the lack front, only two days before were brightly shining mountains..now not visible for cloud and snow. It was very cold, yet, absolutely beautiful. No, I've not changed my mind on the people, but on ... read more
