So this weekend I went to Marseille to collect info on the theater there for my research project- because I'm that kind of overachiever that I decide to do a school project 3,000 miles removed from the school. However, I couldn't find the above-mentioned theater, so in some ways the whole of my Saturday was wasted. But not really, because I still had a good time. I decided that Marseille would be the first site I would grace with my presence because I figured that it was close and I didn't really know what I was doing. When you don't know what you're doing, I've found its always better to do it in a large city where no one will remember you being an idiot. I immediately started my day this way by making the poor ... read more

Hello to all my friends and family who are reading this! So I have finally arrived in France. My flight went well and I am currently in Nice where I will be staying for 2 days before I take the train to Montpellier. It has been a busy day and I'm happy that part one of my journey is done! The hotel is very nice and it has free internet access! Speaking french has been going well, it might be a little rusty but I'll get into a groove after a few days and the people have been patient with me, so it's comforting. I've already made friends with the lady at the reception desk in the hotel cause I've had quite a few questions. Like who knew you had to use your key to the ... read more

Well the discussion thing I went to yesterday was quite interesting. It was about this man-Leo Marchutz- who was an artist and did a lot of work with the IAU. I have actually decided that yesterday was a Bad Day. However, I didn't realize it until last night, so I don't know if that counts. But I digress... So at 17h30 last night Arlette (my host mom) and Collette (her sister) and I walked down to the Musee Granet for this meeting thing. First off we got lost and had to ask people how to get there. But then it turned out I knew where it was all along. So we go into this still under-contruction building and are directed downstairs to the room where everything is happening. I guess they sent out too many invitations ... read more

This week has been pretty uneventful so far. Classes are going well- Romanesque and Gothic is becoming more interesting. I almost moved up into a higher French oral class, but decided for once I won't be an over-achiever. (*gasp!*) I had coffee with the archaeology professor yesterday at a cafe on the Place de Hotel Ville and he gave me all kinds of articles on roman remains here in southern France. I might go with the archaeology class to Arles and St. Remy, but I have to see if there will be room on the bus. History is still slowly draining away my life-force. I've decided to either write the great American novel during classtime, or plan the perfect murder as activities to preserve my sanity. Oh I got some pants and T-shirts at the Gap ... read more

Well this weekend I certainly got a taste of the infamous Mistral! Starting on Friday and lasting through the weekend we had quite a storm system move through. It rained buckets on Friday and Saturday and Sunday were some of the windiest days I've ever had. I walked down to the Gare Routiere on Saturday (because I had nothing else to do) and the wind was literally pushing me along part of the way. It was really nasty. On Saturday, my plan was to walk all over town and see some of the things I haven't seen yet. So that's what I did. It was Putz in the City. Har har. I bought a bus pass for Fevrier and bought some books at the Book in Bar. I ate at PaniniAix by the Palais du Justice, ... read more

Not much new has happened since the weekend. There was a clothing market in the Cours Mirabeau today. I thought it reminded me of China a bit. And I wondered how they could sell so much stuff for 15 euros or whatever. Did it fall off the back of a truck? I missed French 202A this morning because the time is different than my older schedule. Oops. I checked my mail and read a little, then went to look for another pair of pants. I didn’t find anything good though. French 214 was good though. It was all about responses to “Comment ca va?” I guess I should also comment on my other classes. They are all moving at a glacial pace. Cezanne and Van Gogh is all about Balzac at the moment and the prof ... read more

'Belgium'...well, maybe it's 'Girl All the Bad Guys Want', but nothing ruins a song's appeal like too much Grammy praise and radio overplay...except maybe if it's being performed by Nickelback. Those guys are no-talent-ass-clowns. In any event, let's go with Belgium, since that's where this is all leading anyways. As options are limited for a weekend trip, medieval city hopping next door in Belgium seemed like a good idea. A three hour train ride on Friday night got Eugene, Bec, Shruti, Lesley, and I to the hometown of Spurs guard Tony Parker and supposedly the ever quotable Dr. Evil. Vegetarian sensibilities among the girls and the fact that Belgians aren't predisposed to post-sunset economic activity limited our choices and caused us to pick fast food for the first evening's fare. If you think McDonald's is crap, ... read more

Today was a little more relaxed. First stop was St Paul de Vence, another hilltop medieval village, but not so high as Eze, nor as magical. It’s an artist colony now, and there were art galleries all along the main road, if you can call the wide alley through the village a road. We had a brief hour there and then hiked up to the Maeght Foundation Museum. It’s a private museum with tons of modern and contemporary art. There was a lovely water garden by Miro out back. A lot of artists have contributed their works and services to the creation of this museum. The art, as abstract as it is, made a lot more sense in the setting of the woods and the lovely building. Lots of natural light. Then we were off for ... read more

Bonjour from France again. We are in the French Riviera and it is gorgeous here. We arrived in Nice yesterday and we cooked ourselves a lovely breakfast in our kitchenette, took a short nap, strolled the beach, did some laundry and called it a night. Those night trains really do a toll on us. We slept for about 12 hours last night and went running on the promenade along side the sea. It was a rough one for neither of us have ran in 2 weeks but it felt awesome and you cant beat the scenery. The locals here have too much time and money because their tan leathery skin is wrapped in these large fur coats and it is about 60 degrees here. People watching has been fun to say the least. We made ourselves ... read more

So I was pretty early today- first one there actually. Hooray for me. Anywho, the first stop on our excursion was Nice. I went around this seaside city with Molly and Bridget. We spent a good amount of time in the market, looking at the food, spices and assorted wonders. We bought socca- a kind of crepe from Mme Theresa (famous apparently) and ate it while looking further. It was great. Then we bought a pizza and ate that. Finally it was dessert time and I bought us all some canolis with different fillings, two orange cakes called canneles and a croissant Neapolitan with chocolate filling for myself. I told ya- I love chocolate. We took our treats up to the park atop this rock outcropping, from which you can look over the whole coastline of ... read more
