Just in case you need to know, the French for ‘Trick or treat’ is: ‘Donnez-nous des bonbons ou nous vous jetons un mauvais sort’. Snappy eh? Just thought I’d share that with you, as it must be true, since I’ve just read it in today’s ‘La Depeche du Midi’. The countdown starts in earnest today. Tomorrow's the last full day before flying back to the UK on Monday, a day in London on Tuesday doing last minute bits and pieces, and Wednesday........flying to Bangalore.................... ... read more

In Harrogate, Hallowe’en seems to mean spending the evening of 31st October greeting a steady stream of cheerful young witches, wizards, ghosts and ghouls to the door threatening tricks if they don’t get their treats. Here in nearby Belesta, it’s something rather different, since the period round Hallowe’en is for them La Fete de la Citrouille - the Feast of the Pumpkin. Well, just look at those pictures. If you could grow pumpkins like that, wouldn’t you want to celebrate? Yesterday, we had real fun looking round on the first day, which was also their Vide-Grenier day (Empty Your Attics!). Pretty much like an English car boot sale really, except the stalls spread through the streets of the town. French attics and barns can turn out some splendidly puzzling tools and equipment, and as for the ... read more

Another great day. Started off in Mirepoix market, where we spent much of our time being greeted by our new ‘friends‘ from the walk yesterday. That felt good, knowing a few locals and being able to stop and have a chat. Best was going back to the stall of the woman who sells the mushrooms she herself gathers and getting cooking tips for varieties we know nothing about. Isn’t ‘lactaire delicieux’ a lovely name? Looking forward to experimenting! This afternoon was Montsegur, a most wonderful and extraordinary mountain, which can be distinguished from miles away because of its extraordinarily smooth shape. The Autumn colours we’d so much enjoyed at the Gorges de la Frau are even more developed now, and so even though we’ve done the climb many times before, it’s a new experience every time ... read more

Something the French seem to do rather well is enjoy themselves at the weekend by finding a Fete or Festival somewhere nearby. We’ve been to the Fete de la Pomme at Mirepoix, where there were apple stalls, pressed apple juices and cakes and pastries of every kind that could possibly incorporate the odd apple or two. Tractors that should have been fresh from the museum but were probably in routine every day use processed clunkily round the square, adding a rich dose of diesel to the more welcome perfume of maturing apples. We’ve seen a Heavy Horse Show at Saverdun. French heavy horses aren’t Suffolk Punches at all, being much trimmer and almost daintier but there were plenty of them, and it’s clear that they still have a big role to play in French farming. ... read more

It’s not really been possible to stay in touch, because we won’t have internet access till Thursday, so this is in Word and will be transferred. We HAVE been to the only net access in the area, at the Foyer des Jeunes in Lavelanet. Hadn’t thought it through though. French keyboards. Not qwertyuiop. What this means is that every time you type what should be an ‘a’, a ‘q’ pops up. And so on. Simple messages get reduced to short phrases in pidgin, and only essential matters are attended to. Other highlights in Lavelanet included reporting the loss of Mal’s driving license at the Gendarmerie, which ended up as a discussion about the likelihood of France beating the British or not at the rugby. And you know how convincing we both are as conversationalists about sport. ... read more

We’ve kept up our walking itinerary. Every day has seen us either yomping up some Pyrenean crag, eagle, red kite and buzzard watching; poring over the rather unsatisfactory French OS maps wondering how it could be that our 3 ½ km stroll has turned into an 8 ½ km hike; or simply following the ex-railway line that encircles our area in a scenic ramble through the countryside - yes, France clearly had its Dr. Beeching too. Today however, we decided that the Gorges de la Frau had the vote. We knew they were supposed to be spectacularly beautiful, and a hard slog too, but we thought we shouldn’t put it off. The hot weather has gone, and the fleeces are out, though the days are still sunny and sparklingly bright once the early morning frosts have ... read more

OK - don't get worried, there won't be a LOT of updates, but we've recently visited relatives in France, had a great time, and want to share a little of the love we got there. (If you are not interested in any further details on our travels, simply “Unsubscribe” - we won’t have our feelings hurt.) With Shelley both teaching and working in administration along with Jonalyn going to school every day, we don’t have a lot of time to do “tourist” things very much. However, while we were in Norway we found out that Shelley’s Mother’s Cousin’s granddaughter (that means she is related to us if you get the genealogy correct) was being baptized the first weekend in October, so we invited ourselves to the celebration. As usual, we got to stay with Magna, (Shelley’s ... read more

We're getting ready to go to France next week, Malcolm and I, to our house in Laroque d'Olmes. Lots to do, and not feeling as enthusiastic as we thought we would. We've been looking forward to this moment for more than 3 years when we first bought the house, but now we're not quite so sure.....I think it's the thought of missing all our friends, and more particularly our 2 year old twin grandsons, Ben and Alex. And at the same time, I'm packing for India in November.............lots to do... read more

Hi everyone, Well as I said, time really does go fast when you are having fun, so I thought I would do an update of the France trip so far. I have attended all three England rugby games so far and hopefully they will make the quater finals in Marseille as I am heading down to the south of France. After completing a full circle in the North of France, popping into Stad de France in Paris and heading back to good old Blighty for a refresh of the roses (and sales team!), we then headed around the North coast to Mont Saint Micheal. A wonderful castle built on a rock out to sea. The west coast beckoned for the England Samoa game in Neimes. We fanally got tickets for 20 euros each (face value 65 ... read more
