2nd September 2007 Cooked pasta dinner and then set off back into Chartres again with English couple from site (Tim and Jean) to go to a clarinet interlude in the cathedral starting at nine. It was an awsome experience sitting in the dark listening to the wonderful music with bats flying around our heads. The conductress was an unlikely, fascinating character and she played in the last song and brought a brilliance to the group. At the end of the evening at 10 we walked out of the cathedral but the best was yet to come. There was an illuminere display on the south face of the massive cathedral. Slowly pictures were dropped down onto areas of the facade until eventually the fascia of the cathedral had turned to a medieval picture and then ultimately to ... read more

There were two things I really wanted to see this year while in France; one being the Toulouse Lautrec museum in Albi, the other being the castle at Montségur where many Cathars spent their last days. I was so eager to see both places that I was prepared to go and find them on my own, but luckily for me JB offered to take me on a road trip across France to see them. As it happens, both Albi and Montségur reside in France’s Midi-Pyrénées region so it made seeing both of them a lot easier than I’d first imagined. Imagine the odds that the two places I was dying to see happened to be situated only a couple of hundred kilometres away from each other! First stop was Montségur, a tiny little village 1100kms from ... read more

Hello, bonsoir!!! finally stopped for long enough to find internet access! Just a quick run down of what we have been up to and a few pics. Having trouble finding internet connections, apologies for lack of blog entries! 21st-30th August stayed in Lacour de Visa in Midi Pyranees with Deb, Kevin, Tom and Sam. Lazy days (and a couple of very hot ones - 36 degrees) 30th Aug - 2nd Sept stayed in a lovely "Campsite Municipal" in Condom (yes I know) - again lazy days, bike riding and enjoying less intense sunny days. 2nd - 3rd Sept -Lourdes. Don't know what to say about this one! An experience! Extremes, very strange. 3rd Sept to present - Carcassonne, nearly on the coast! Beautiful, fortified medieval city, lovely campsite. Have not been reading newspapers from home and ... read more

The last part of our tour is to take in France, and unfortunately, it is a bit farther away than we had hoped. All our long drives seem to be in this tail end - but seeing as we only have 4 nights left, we had best make the most of a bad bus situation J 700 k’s meant reading - and Iz and I were both buried in books to pass the time. It is great seeing him read, as he doesn’t pick up a book at home. Now he has read two more, with a third underway (I talked him into reading Cloudstreet, and he’s loving it?) We managed to arrive at our final destination, the holy city of Lourdes at 5pm, and I decided to watch some tele, while Iz went for a ... read more

This is an account of a cycling trip I took in France in August 2007, drawn from letters home to my wife. The plan was to start in Bayonne, at the Atlantic coast, and go across to the Mediterranean coast at Narbonne. The route would climb into the Pyrenees, taking in at least one Tour de France col before heading North and following river valleys and the Canal du Midi. I based the first three days on recommendations from members of the Cycle Touring Club, the rest I made up as I went along. Wednesday 22nd Aug It was a long journey on the bike bus. - but longer for most as they’d come from up North yesterday morning. One chap I spoke to had cycled from his home - leaving at midnight on Tuesday! Hard ... read more

Most people have always dreamt of a holiday in the South of France - cruising on your yacht in the beautiful Mediterranean, stopping by at some of the most luxurious ports in the world, and enjoying the never-ending sunny weather on the beach. Well, apart from the yacht bit, I can now officially say that I have done it - are you jealous? Well it gets worse...if you ARE jealous ;-) At the end of my train ride from Genoa, was the sunny seaside town of Nice. Famous for the mega-rich superyachts moored in it's port, the city-side beach, it's azure waters and the town's laid-back charm, it is indeed a holiday haven. Except, that Nice was actually a lot bigger than I had thought. My hostel was up the top of the hill, and the ... read more

Note to self, "Its not such a good idea to find cheap lodgings close to a station". Though the hotel itself was fine, the area got a bit scetchy at night with prostitutes walking the streets. There were also a few beggars around. One of them camped on the street and had a really cute puppy with him which he was obviously taking good enough care of - I just wondered how he afforded to feed an animal when he couldn't take care of himself, but maybe he needed the company more than food... Toulouse is described as a lively city, however I think that due to the holidays it was hardly buzzing at all. Place du Capitole - the main square. I took the obligatory photo, but after seeing the magnificant squares in Brussles nothing ... read more

So I last wrote a few days ago while I was in Tarbes. Later that day I rode to Lourdes which wasn't that far of a ride. I decided to stay there for 2 nights and take some time to see the city and then ride up to the finish of a stage at le Col d'Aubisque. I really liked this town and it has been by far the best one yet. Found a hotel near the train station and spent the rest of the afternoon/evening wandering around the town. This place is a zoo of catholic tourists/pilgrimages. I wasn't aware of this but apparently Lourdes is the place where the Virgin Mary appeared to St. Bernadette at the "Grotto". Now there is a huge Basilica built on top of the spot and there are tons ... read more
