... read more

Here in France, you can’t escape the fact that The Tour de France has started. Double page spreads as a minimum in every paper and publicity everywhere. Well, for myself, I could take it or leave it, but actually we’re getting quite excited, because on Thursday 17th July, IT PASSES OUR HOUSE! Lavelanet, our neighbouring town, is where the Tour spends the night before and then sets off in the morning. We’ll spend the evening of the 16th there too, because there will be parties galore, street festivals, general mayhem. The whole town will be closed to traffic. Notices in today’s paper tell us that on the 17th, Laroque will be too. Did you think the cyclists would get an early start to get a few kilometers in before the heat of the day built up? ... read more

Another week, another festival. This time, in Lavelanet, to celebrate its reason for being: textiles. So the Festo des Tisserands celebrates the weavers who made their lives here through the centuries. We decided to go on the walk which allegedly follows the route taken by those who worked their cloth at Montségur and brought their goods to Lavelanet to sell. Hard graft really: it’s a 500 metre climb from the town to Montsegur, and a 16 kilometre round trip along steep rocky paths through the woods, upwards, ever upwards. Still, this was a well-publicised celebration, not yet another wearisome slog brought on by hunger and sheer economic necessity, and some 85 people joined in. So our rucksacks were carried by llamas (not exactly traditional round here, but they’ve caught on as a tourist attraction amongst walkers ... read more

Well Well…I bet you all thought you heard the last off me hey? Although my RTW trip is over and I have been falling into depression since returning home, with having to face all the stress and burden of the real world and how I wish I could escape again. Dreaming of a far far away land i will venture to in the future when that opportunity will open again for me. So when a friend invited me to join him on an adventure on his motorbike through the Pyrenees… It was a very hard decision to accept :) THE MOTORCYLE DAIRY. Day 1 - The journey started from Newbury to Portsmouth and we had to get the overnight ferry over to La Harve. Day 2 - The initial plan was not to go on the ... read more

Europe » France » Midi-Pyrénées » Lourdes July 1st 2008

Spent the morning travelling to Lourdes and arrived there at around 2pm. It was a beautiful hot day. On our way there though we stopped at a town called Pau and had some lunch and looked at a castle there, this town also had an amazing view of the Pyrenees. Lourdes is a pilgrimage town and apparently about 6 million people visit it each year. It is France´s second most popular city after Paris. We walked down to the basilica that is on top of St Bernadette´s grotto. Mum and I walked around for a while and there was also a walk up a mountain that had monuments showing the stations of the cross and Mum and I did that. Before heading back to the hotel we had an icecream and ran into Shayne and Karen, ... read more

I AM GOING TO BEGIN THIS BY MAKING AN APOLOGY FOR ALL FUTURE SPELLING ERRORS ON THESE PAGES. WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT IT COULD BE SO DIFFICULT TO TYPE ON A CHINESE KEYBOARD! Right here goes... Lourdes is a lot of things to a lot of people but to the pilgrims that make the journey year after year and in fact to any pilgrim that has made the journey it is what i'd call a suprisingly emotional experience. Now I am not sure if I would have said that if I was to write this after the first or even the second day that I was there because up to then I couldn't see past the massive crowds (30,000 sitting for an 8.30am Wednesday morning mass kind of crowds) and the rows and rows, streets and ... read more

Another week of general busyness. What to write about? Perhaps our walk to Leran, the next village along in the middle of the week. We couldn’t resist the wild cherry trees we passed, and somehow tottered home with 2 kilos which have now become jars of cherry jelly and cherry jam. Or the Rando des Artistes on Saturday. Three local villages, all on the pilgrimage route to Compostella, laid on art exhibitions, and arranged a guided walk from Vals back to the 3rd village, Manses, where we all had lunch, picnic-ing in the seats already laid out for the village's communal meal that night as part of their fête, and back to Vals again, this time via Teilhet. One of the walkers was a botanist, but even more fascinating than his observations about flowers and plants ... read more

So.... we finally got to the Pyrenees and we were delighted to see such a beautiful snowed topped mountain ranges as we got here. The weather was so sizzling when we arrived far too hot to bike ride, fortunately on the day of our first ride it was quite cloudy phew... The Pyrenees is much quieter that i expected, Sam wondered what i thought would be at the top of a great big mountain, the towns are just stunning and have a lovely feel during the day, we have pictured one that we were at yesterday which is right by where the bottom of our second Mammoth Col Du Menthe started..(except for lunchtime 12-2.30pm when it is like a Ghost town, nothing stops the French having lunch!)and quiet during the evening, i.e. no night life, not ... read more
