If it's Sunday, as it was yesterday, it must be the day for a rando with our Randonneurs. Near Tarascon - only half an hour from here - but well into the Pyrenees. The weather has been quite iffy lately, but yesterday was glorious- brilliant spring sunshine, bright blue skies with no clouds, and welcome heat. We parked in a small village off the main road, Bouan, and set off, climbing straight away, through the forest, and upwards, upwards, unremittingly upwards. Early on we stopped for a breather and noticed a village high above us on the other side of the valley. 'However would anybody get up THERE?' we wondered. We soon found out....the hard way. Ever onwards we climbed, though at one point the contours levelled off, and we enjoyed more level open conditions, with ... read more

This has been a week of achievement. The 2 back windows, tatty in the extreme, have been replaced and not only look better, but give more light, more I the way of views. Back door renewed, garage/front door replaced. Our house, like many down here, has no glamorous front door giving onto a spacious and gracious hall with a welcoming carpet, a few well-chosen pictures and an umbrella stand. You quite simply go in through the garage, with all the clutter you might expect there, and troop through to reach the rest of the house. However, the blinds that accompany the windows, ordered with them since last October, simply have not yet arrived. No explanation. Oh well, tough, we’ll hang onto our money, and they won’t get paid till it’s all complete. Curtains have been made ... read more

A weekend of new events. Saturday lunchtime: photo call up by the church for Laroque Autrement, a Gauche Tout! to launch the 23 candidates onto the political scene. Apparently, parties have to produce 23 candidates for local elections - neither more nor fewer - and Mal is now on the list. Bit of a barney about which of the two of us it should be: in the end, Mal’s better French won out against the fact that the list now has 9 women against 14 men, and my presence could have made it more even. What has he got into? We shall perhaps know more after Tuesday evening and the next meeting…. Oh, and after that we went off to Limoux. Their Lenten carnival lasts from early January and into March, so I imagine everyone in ... read more

At the invitation of our neighbour Lulu, we went on another organised walk yesterday, with some rather older citizens of Lavalanet and Laroque. Dun , the village we started from, is a pretty community set among the rolling hills between us and Pamiers and Mirerpoix- a little more distant from the Pyrenees than us, but quite 'English' in its gentle appeal. We walked along country tracks, through ancient hamlets, and near the ruined castle of Dun, enjoying the comapny of quite a varied group of people. We have learnt nothing about hiking in France. We really should have known by now..... Abiout 2 and a half hours into the walk, our leader suddenly said 'This place'll do', and sat us down in a tree-lined spot, for...well, we supposed a rest. But no! There were a dozen ... read more

I don’t want you all to think that life is just a long succession of pleasant rambles in the Pyrenees, punctuated by splendid meals and enjoyable interludes in bars. Oh, no! There is work to be done too. The potager requires urgent and unending attention. One edge of it overlooks a public footpath, courtesy of a high retaining wall, and a wretched shrubby ivy with a powerful root system is determined to conquer first the wall, then the world. It might have stood a chance of winning if the local gendarmerie hadn’t alerted us to the fact that Complaints Had Been Made about the lierre overhanging the path. It’s been a blessing really, as we now see that the plant, left to conquer on unchecked, would have loosened and finally felled the retaining wall. So we’re ... read more

Yesterday was Mal’s birthday, so we celebrated by joining our walking group in a healthy walk. It should have been walking with raquettes in the snow, and a new experience for us-, but …… no snow. So an alternative meant driving over to nearby Foix and taking it from there. The Walking Club is a fun group. About 25 or so regularly turn up for the Sunday walks - not always the same people, but you can count on Roger the President, a likeable and jolly retired fireman: Nicolas, who likes to yodel and whoop on mountain walks in such a way that his voice echoes and reverberates round the surrounding slopes - we met him in Lavelanet market last Friday as he is one of the council road sweepers: Andrée is a retired teacher, with ... read more

by Austin Girl http://www.austingirlblog.blogspot.com In Castelnaudary, France, there are no Starbucks - only bars. I visited one such bar appropriately named: ‘The Caffe’ Bar.” It serves beer, whiskey and wine. Locals drink the “stop-your-heart” espresso shots in the morning and either beer or Pastis, at night. Pastis is a favorite among the French. The French must have a warped fetish for licorice. Watered down, I could not stomach Pastis. Drunk, I could not stomach Pastis. The preferred way to drink this liqueur is watered down -- my preferred way is NOT. Eschew. Avoid. Just say no. Stay far, far away unless you want to have licorice nightmares. The aromatic, sharply pungent chewy smell of licorice conjures up haunting memories, ugly, nasty haunting memories… the kind of memories that rise to the surface and pop like a ... read more

by Austin Girl http://www.austingirlblog.blogspot.com In the quaint village of Castelnaudary, France there are polite, charming people who don't speak English. This is an important travel tip for those visiting who haven't mastered the French-At-A-Glance Phrase Book and Dictionary for Travelers on the long-ass flight over there. Our hapless adventure begins with Austin Girl, the non-speaking-French blonde Baptist traveler who visited the south of France for a few weeks while writing her screenplay. Armed with only the knowledge of two words: 'Bonjour' and 'Merci' -- she quickly surmised that she may be mired in deep doggie doo doo shit. Each morning, Austin Girl visited "The Caffe' Bar" located in the town square. And each morning, using a drunken form of sign language, she described her coffee drink of choice to the French-speaking Waiter Boy who had a ... read more

I was actually surprised to have headed to Lourdes so soon after Fatima, but it was the 150th anniversary of the first Marian apparition there so we figured it would be the best time to go! We took a bus to Madrid through the night and then a discount airline to get to Pamplona, where we were staying with a friend of a friend who works at the University of Navarra. The first day in Pamplona we took a bus an hour south to the town of Olite, walked though a huge castle and toured a wine museum where we recieved complimentary bottles of Crianza from the Navarra region. That night we ate at a restaurant frequented by Hemingway, next to the hotel La Perla, where he always stayed. His favorite room 217 is never empty. ... read more

A day in the high Pyrenees with our new Rando de l’Aubo friends near Tarascon. What a pity the day has dawned so misty and grey. Never mind. We arrive at the ALDI car park which is our rendez-vous point, and don’t recognise any of the walkers arriving at the same time, but it’s probably old fogue memory loss, so rush round shaking hands anyway. One of the group says ‘We know you’re walkers, but you’re not from our group. We’re from Toulouse’. Oops. They depart, and in due course, so does our group, in convoy. We’re last. The car immediately ahead of us loses sight of the ones in front, and soon shows signs of being lost….. Up a side road in Vicdessos, some 15 km out of Tarascon, the passengers spend a long time ... read more
