We could have parked up for the night at the Bamboo gardens but they seemed to be filling up rather quickly which might have made getting out difficult. They were on the slant which meant getting the ramps out which is a pain as you get older or sleeping on the slant . In the end we drove back to Anduze with the intentions of parking on the flat railway station free parking spot . It was not the most salubrious of camping spots but unlike the gardens it was flat . We could fill up with water for 2 euros or have electricity instead and dump our grey water and empty our toilet . It was also within walking distance of the town with its boulangeries and we hoped decent restaurant . On our first ... read more

Well we made a city in the end . It had to happen finally. We could not keep missing them . We had done our research and found it quite easy to get into Nimes. There were two very large car parks on the T1 bus route into the city . Both were park and rides . The furthest out was Casarges and the second one at Parnassus. We chose Parnassus because it seemed easier to park the van and it felt reasonably safe. We parked up and searched out where to buy our tickets . Was this going to be another place where tickets were hard to come by. In the end after looking at closed buildings we followed the crown who seemed to be walking up the steps to the road above . There ... read more

Have you any idea how many types of bamboo there are ? Me neither . I was bamboozled with the numbers . There must be rather a lot or why would have a Bamboo garden? . A garden dedicated to nothing more than bamboo. A garden which is a solid green most of the time. We had spotted the Bambouseraie de Prafrance a private botanical garden in Anduze when we were looking for something different to see and do. 84 acres of garden specialising in bamboo. Only opening in the warmer months we were lucky to be able to visit when we arrived at Anduze for a few days . We had a few minutes ago parked up outside a campsite handy for the gardens . A campsite which the ACSI book stated had been open ... read more

Would have , could have and should have were the words that were going round and round our heads. Had we known about the train from Argeles we should have travelled to Perpignan from Elna. Had we known there was no ticket machine at the station we could have bought our tickets on line . The world seemed full of those should haves, could haves and would haves today. Our sat nav was even as muddled as we were are she kept getting muddled up finding roads to somewhere we wanted to visit . We stayed the night at a small aire in the village of Vinassin . The plan was to wake up, breakfast , wait until 10 am UK time and order our tickets for the National League Trophy Final at Wembley on line ... read more

Our next overnight stop was a small out of town aire in the tiny village of Bram . It was a decent site with automatic barries , a dump, free water, a fishing lake and was very quiet . We shared our night stop with two others. It had no infrastructure to speak of and we were only using it as a nightstop. Leaving the site we headed off to the town of Elne or Elna depending if you used French or the local dialect . We had planned a night stop on a camping car site . We had topped up the card before leaving home so it was only a case of finding the site, putting the card in the machine and it should let us in . We had heard some poor reports ... read more

So what were my first thoughts about the seaside town of Argeles Sur Mer? It is not the sort of place we head for these days . A sort of Skegness with sun or Blackpool with less tacky shops . Well that was my thoughts as we made the decision to spend a few days here relaxing by the Med. We needed to stop off to get away from driving . With the sun beating down at last it felt right to stop and take stock before moving on again . And of course after our aborted trip to Perpignan we still had a plan to see the Palace of the Kings of Majorca and we could do this easily from Argeles railway station . What we did not realise when we parked up at Camping ... read more

Who could have predicted a global pandemic that stopped the world as we knew, restricting travelling was a big impact on people, but luckily we had been lucky enough to do so much travelling before. We managed to take advantage of a small travel window and still get out to France for August knowing we would have to isolate for 10 days afterwards which we thought was worth it as we could work from home. We flew in to Montpellier where we hired a car and headed north stopping at places like Saint-Guilhem-le-Desert which is a great little village to shop and have lunch in the court yard with a huge tree and cliffs in the background and not far away is Le Pont du Diable, where you can laze about in the little beach and ... read more

After Mende we spent two more days wending our way through the quiet, green hills of the Cevennes. Then yesterday we stumbled into Tourist France. The first hint was the flotilla of multi-coloured kayaks floating down the Ardèche river. Then we reached Pont d'Arc, an incredible stone arch carved by the river over millennia. An awesome spectacle - and a destination of bus tours and helicopter charters... We stayed at a chambre d'hotes nearby, and had another brush with meteorological disaster. Minutes after we arrived at the house, the skies opened with a furious deluge. The thunderstorm lasted all night and into the morning. We were starting to wonder how we could avoid getting soaked on the day's ride when the storm ended (after 16 hours!) almost as abruptly as it started. A good thing, too, ... read more

Since we left the Perigord, we've been following the Lot river. Some of the time we've been riding right beside the twisting river, through narrow gorges as well as places where the valley widens out and the flat valley bottom is carpeted with farmland. Our route has also taken us up to the plateau above the river valley, with amazing views across the valley or to distant hills. Today we had the most challenging ride so far. We started and ended at towns on the Lot - St Geniez d'Olt and Mende. However, in between we climbed an incredibly steep road to a summit at 1022 metres. Most of the climb happened over 4.3 km with a grade of up to 12%! From the summit we could see some old volcanic mountains. It was an amazing ... read more

Thursday we met ALL the gang in Gruissan….the salt flats where they sell lots and lots of salt products….did a tour but this one was totally in French…so 90 minutes really wasted. Lovely establishment near the beach…was great to see the area. Loaded ourselves in the cars and drove to Narbonne to get groceries and stuff for lunch as Chateau Haut Gleon doesn’t have a restaurant….so yummy baguettes, ham, cheese tomato….delish all in the garden of the chateau. Chateau Haut Gleon is not in a town but in the countryside about 8klm from two towns….but wow what a gorgeous estate…nice rooms, pool and breakfast room and of course tasting rooms for the wines. Drove to local village for dinner each night which was quite nice…living like a local and that is what we really like. Friday ... read more
