We could have parked up for the night at the Bamboo gardens but they seemed to be filling up rather quickly which might have made getting out difficult. They were on the slant which meant getting the ramps out which is a pain as you get older or sleeping on the slant . In the end we drove back to Anduze with the intentions of parking on the flat railway station free parking spot . It was not the most salubrious of camping spots but unlike the gardens it was flat . We could fill up with water for 2 euros or have electricity instead and dump our grey water and empty our toilet . It was also within walking distance of the town with its boulangeries and we hoped decent restaurant .
On our first foray into town we admired the lovely park and the neat clean and tidy streets . We talked about how easy or had it had been for the driver to cope with Gabby after two years away from driving her . Jokingly we discussed getting her gear box converted to an automatic which would be easier for Glenn to drive . Little did we
know it but this holiday was proving harder to cope with than any previous ones.
The town was dominated by one main street with the sort of tabacs that are smoky and full of older men sitting in corners reading their newspapers, drinking a cognac and smoking . There was a very large what looked like a church tower on one corner with a cockerel on the top . It must once have been an important tower but now it was empty and slightly unloved . Any thought of a restaurant went quickly out of the window as we found none.
We had tickets for the Train de Vapeur de Cevannes for the next day We had paid for them on line and just needed to exchange them at the gare , We had little choice when to catch the train as the season had only started a few days before and the train did not run every day due to being run by volunteers . The first diesel train ran from Anduze to St Jean de Gard at 8.30 and that would have been OK for us except it only rain on high days and holidays and
sadly tomorrow was not going to be a high day nor a holiday . The first realistically was at 11.30. Rather later than we would have liked.
Plan two fell into place or would have done had the two camping aires at St Jean de Gard been available to us . We must have driven the road between Anduze and St Jean times many in the hunt for the elusive aires . Had we found them we could have got on the train at 10. The first aire should have been in front of the gard . It was there but there was a notice saying that no high sided vehicles could stop. That ruled us out. The second was further out of town and was shut. We were shooed away by a rather miserable lady who lived next door. So no alternative but back to Anduze for the night .
To be fair it was quiet . We emptied, we filled and we were on site ready for the opening of the gare in the morning .
