Apologies to anyone who had trouble with the pictures in the last blog entry from St Guihem le Désert. There was a system problem that prevented all photos on all blogs from displaying for about a day and a half. All seems to be well again. Carcassone We had google mapped Carcassonne before we left home but we cleverly just got off the train and started walking. We figured we could find the tourist office without a detailed map and we did. The very helpful lady gave us a city map and told us to turn left, go through the square, cross the bridge and follow the road up the hill to the entrance on the other side of the fortress. Twenty minutes. Piece of cake. Pride goeth before a fall. We cut through the square ... read more

We have long been interested in the Chemin de St Jacques, the Pilgrim’s Way from all over Europe to Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain. Well, not enough to actually walk it ourselves but it has been fun to follow the adventures of various friends who have walked it. One of the trails passes through Montpellier and we have walked the route through the city, several portions of it before we discovered the streets we liked to walk were actually part of the route. In our readings about the Camino, we found references to St Guilhem le Désert, a small town not too far from here. The web site says it is one of the most beautiful villages in France. How could we pass that up? Our preferred method of exploration is to look places up ... read more

In the last blog I mentioned I had come down with a nasty cough and cold. It really got in the way of being an energetic tourist and blogger. Fortunately, Dianne didn’t succumb to the cold and I seem to be on the mend. During this period we took it pretty easy. Fortunately our base camp is well situated for walks around the old city and, being near a tram stop, we can jump on a tram and go all over Montpellier to start our walks in different locations. The low point of the trip so far, was Thursday, February 28th. How do I know? Well, Dianne took exactly one picture. It was of me taking a nap. Zoo Getting to the zoo involves a long tram ride followed by a transfer to a local bus. ... read more

Our latest adventure takes us back to France where the centre piece is a five week stay in Montpellier visiting with Mr. Darcy, the cat we sat with in 2017. Several other stops are planned in what will be a 68 night trip. In the two months between Dec 20th when the big windstorm hit Pender (and other locations around us) and Feb 20th when we left for France, things were pretty wild. Lots of devastation because of the wind storm (but no fatalities) and two major (for us) snow storms cancelled lots of activities. Snow on Pender is a problem because of the hills and limited snow removal equipment. So it was with some pleasure we left for France and temperatures forecast in the 17-20°C range Our itinerary took us through Vancouver and Frankfurt. Both ... read more

Yesterday, we popped across to the bar, "Le Terminus," for a drink. Today, in the course of exploring this little tiwn, we ended up there THREE TIMES. Fortunately, due to the times of day, our order was different each visit (small coffees, then teas, and finally wine/beer), so we never got to the "Comme d'habitude, M'sieur-dame?" stage! Parts of the town are lovely and well maintained, but other streets, nearby, seem run down or even abandoned. Strange. We met some Brits who live here, but we agreed we could never do that - too isolated, surrounded by all those mountains! Anyway, we've enjoyed our visit, but we're ready to move on tomorrow.... read more

Titles starting to seem strange now. Not just because 42 is the answer to the ultimate question of Life, the Universe and Everything, but because we're not in Spain anymore, having crossed the border this afternoon, back into our adopted country. But it's all one trip, and the titles link the bits together - so it's still "the Spain trip." That last little car park gave us a surprisingly peaceful night, since both road and the railway were far enough away not to keep us awake - at least until the morning commutes kicked off. By then the sun was shining straight at us across the Med, so who cares? As we'd decided last night, we set the satnav for the first motorhome "aire" in France, at Port Vendres. It was a longer stage than we'd ... read more

Today's hike was Caranca Gorges. Again, locating the trailhead was a challenge. The gorge was beautiful and the hike challenging. I love these hikes. The scenery combined with the physical challenge to my body, I feel like I am using my body as it is intended...the machine like quality to climb the mountain, the dexterity and coordination not to stubble along the rocky terrain, and the mental fortitude to believe whatever comes up is meant for me. The path took us near the river and then up a steep ascent (70 floors of climbing according to the iPhone tracker). From the peak of the hike, we could see the what we assumed to be the return path (a tunnel blown out of the rock on the opposite side of the river. The trees were probably a ... read more

Day 16 - We are heading up FRance with little idea where to go to next. We have just looked at the map and picked a road heading home. The weather had turned. Now we no longer face 34 degrees of heat but need to put our jumpers and coats on. It is dull and the rain has started to creep in bit by bit. We have very little in the way of plans. We have done what we wanted to do and we have seen what we wanted to see . All in all we did them too quickly. We will hit the north of France too soon at this rate. How about heading for the seaside ? How about heading for the battlefields ? This was the way our conversations were flying between us. ... read more

This one was a short trip on the land of the good men, as Cathars were called. The Cathars believed that materialism was corrupted and only by the ascetic way of living, a good man could reach paradise. Anyone could have told by the places where they built their castles. Who could live there? Cold, wind, isolation... the Cathars were really strong people in their beliefs. So the road trip started with Quéribus and Peypertuse castles. I stayed near a small village called St Paul de Fenouillet. Actually I tried Gamping for the first time there. It's an awesome concept. I was alone, near the vineyards and a river, where I could bathe the wild way. It was a marvellous spot for painting. I also visited les Gorges de Galamus, natural pools surrounded by super dangerous ... read more

Murray and I used to play this board game called Carcassonne, well before we were married. I didn't realise it was a real medieval city in the South of France. We decided it was well worth a visit and it didn't disappoint. The Le boat canal boat trip we wanted to do, didn't actual get a view of Carcassonne, so we went down a day earlier to make sure we had time to look around. Our randomly booked apartment overlooked breathtaking Carcassonne. We were not disappointed. We loved looking around at night especially, exploring the nooks and crannies of the ramparts and finding new view points over the city. We drove down from Geneva, a 5 hour journey on the toll road. Mum, Dad, Daniel and Sarah went down by train, with 2 changes. We then ... read more
