Well we arrived safe and sound in Paris after a very, very long flight……always a chore…hate the long flight but lounge access does help! Straight out of the plane at 8.30pm to hire car company and drove 40km out of Paris for a head start for Saturday am, 540klm drive down south to Puy-en-Velay…..six and a half hours later arrived in this very spectacular town and our lovely hotel The Dyke Hotel run by a young French couple and they were so, so friendly and gave us lots of advice about the town….right on the edge of the old town. Spent the afternoon walking the town with a visit to the Rocher St Michel D’Aiguilhe (the rock of St Michael)…big walk up 288 steps to the top of it….well worth it for the wonderful view. Then ... read more

Another tour around the smaller village, starting off at Pennautier. We visited the Château- not open but walked around the grounds. Attached is a boutique selling wines produced on the estates. On then to Aragon it unable to access - Route Barre - we think the many of the roads in this area were being repaired after the devastating winter flooding. The view of the village from the hill was picturesque, quite like Tuscany ! We travelled onto Saissac where we had lunch - Madame Said we had to be quick as she had a dental appointment at 2pm. However, as usual the food was excellent. Then walked down to the castle, it was first recorded in 958 AD. Ruins of course, but interesting. Then back to pack up as tomorrow we head up to Cahors. ... read more

Today we took a road trip. Our first port of call was Villesèquelande where stands the Ormeau de Sully - an Elm tree planted in the 16C - - the knights museum was closed ! Then headed into Truffle Country at Moussoulens, but no black diamonds found! Montolieu was a village with 20 plus book shops, art galleries and potters! Lunch was enjoyed in the main square at Cassquets et Chapeau - caeser salad with anchovies served by an Irish lady whose French husband was the chef. Then onto Saint-Martin-le-Veil stopping en route to view the Cistercian Abbey of Villelongue - the medieval gardens were worth the stop. Good day - saw lots you could so easily miss, thank you Google !!!... read more

Today we visited La Cite de Carcassonne. We were last here 5 years ago. Enjoyed lunch French style in the square - salade! The Cite is the largest and best conserved medieval fortress in Europe. Double walled and the beautiful basilica of St Nazaire. The stained glass are considered the best in the south of France. The ramparts are spectacular and give superb views of the surrounding countryside. Very warm and clear blue skies - the first this trip !!!!!!... read more

We choose Carcassonne over other places in France that we haven’t been before, for one reason; potential place to retire. The cost of living here is very low a 900 square foot apartment with two bedrooms for $900 a month. That is less than half of what we pay in New York for 720 square feet and one bedroom. To fully get the feel for the town, our original plan was to rent a couple of bikes, stop at a couple of real estate offices then ride by apartments, houses, etc. Biking was not in our stars. First, I had originally booked some bikes on line, but they never confirmed or responded to my three e-mails, at least no money exchanged hands. The hotel did have bikes available, even though they did not advertise that, so ... read more

Part of the reason I am behind in my blogging and now typing this when I should be typing today’s is, we had a very early train from Paris to Carcassonne. The initial plan was to blog while we were on the train, but sleep won out. The day started at 3:30 for Jerry, yes, he got up first because it just takes him longer. I slept until 4:30. We had done most of the packing the night before, so only needed to shower and to the last-minute items in the morning. We were on the curb waiting for the cab by 5:30. Yes, we took a cab to the train station, normally, we take the metro everywhere, to the train station, to the airport, but we are in our mid 50’s now and are trying ... read more

Montpellier is well situated for taking day trips to nearby (and sometimes not so nearby) towns. But, we have discovered there are lots of neat places to walk in Montpellier. The trips described in this blog entry were taken on random days over the period we were there. The pictures are grouped by location rather than chronologically as sometimes the destinations overlapped. Tram station to tram station The tram that runs by our apartment heads south towards the Mediterranean but splits before it gets there into Lattes Centre and Perols. You can walk from either to the sea or take a local bus. We decided to be daring and walk from Lattes to Palavas-Les-Flots, the resort town right on the beach, along the beach and back up to Perols. It’s only 12 or 13 kilometres and ... read more

The Castries adventure began on a lazy Sunday afternoon. We were entering the last week of our five week stay with Mr. Darcy and wanted to make sure we had seen all we wanted to see of the region. Our tools were a glass of Rosé, a baguette, some cheeses and the tourist map of Montpellier. What caught our eye wasn’t the town of Castries just outside the metropolitan area; it was the Tourist Information symbol beside the town’s name. If it has a tourist office, there must be something to see, right? Further examination led us to the quote “carrying water a distance of 6,822 metres to the Gardens of the Châteaux, it is considered to be the largest hydraulic system in France”. Having just seen the 55 kilometre aqueduct including the Pont du Gard, ... read more

When we were in Montpellier two years ago we traveled to Nîmes. We thought we could do the town and the Pont du Gard (the famous aqueduct that brought water to Nîmes) in one day. Then we discovered how far it was from Nîmes to the Pont. We did the town and regretted our inability to see the aqueduct. If you are interested in our previous experience in the town, click https://www.travelblog.org/Europe/France/Languedoc-Roussillon/N-mes/blog-974056.htmlhere. I did and it brought back some great memories. The Roman museum in Nîmes Nîmes was everything we remembered. As soon as you exit the train station you find yourself walking up this incredibly wide mall lined with trees and benches. A few blocks into town you come to the amazing amphitheatre which in many ways is more impressive than the Coliseum in ... read more
