It's funny, I never thought I would write about any of our voyage in retrospect. I thought there was a clear line between travelling, as we did from October till April, and working for 6 months in France. But of course it was just another part of the journey. I guess we have always been tavelling in some way so I intend to keep the journey chronicled, now.... where was I. We arrived in England in April to the same temperature that the air con was set to when we left Mumbai. After some mad frantic days of preparation the van was ready and we set off to France, to sunny Franceuil and our summer job working at Camping Moulin Fort. 34 Euros! That was the first shock 34 Euros for the main toll road to ... read more

Sometimes it’s hard to describe exactly how far away my house is from the university, so today I have a small illustration: When I left the university today, it was sunny—cold, yes (it’s been around freezing all day) but the sun made it alright. However, about halfway home from the university it started snowing. HARD. Before I knew it, gusts of snow were blowing in my face with huge flakes fluttering everywhere. Then, about a block before I reached my house, all the snow STOPPED. The weather dramatically changed TWICE. In other news, the past two days have been pretty good—I’ve been enjoying lounging around in my house with no one else here, spreading out all my stuff over the entirety of the kitchen table and chowing down on all the homemade bread that was left ... read more

Today I experienced two new things on my walk home from class: 1. I was walking along the Boulevard when probably a high school aged kid rung the door bell of a house right in front of me, then darted across the street and hid in the bushes. 2. About five minutes later, I was passed on the sidewalk by someone riding a unicycle. My family left me an orphan on Saturday, so I've been holding down the du Chazaud household toute seule, like a champ. It's actually not that bad--it's kind of like living alone in France, which is pretty cool. It is a pretty big house though, and sometimes I hear noises like someone's walking around in the room next to me, which the first time I was kind of surprised, and then I ... read more

This weekend was so fun. I already wrote about the Saturday excursion to Amboise, but I haven’t written yet about how Friday night late Marie and Clare (22 and 10 year old sisters) came home for the weekend. Friday afternoon the family had told that Marie and Claire would get home around 10:45 Friday night and that they were both (but especially Claire) looking forward to meeting me! I was in my room that night and I thought that I heard them come in, but I didn’t want to go downstairs to butt in on family time, I was going to wait and see if they told me to come downstairs, but around 11:10, I decided that I should probably stop looking up travel plans for April break and go downstairs to introduce myself. I go ... read more

Last night we went to our first discoteque called xcalibar. We walk by it almost everyday because it’s in Place Plume, and it looked pretty sweet, so we decided to check it out because we don’t have class Fridays. (eeeee!) Sadly, it was not as sweet as it looked. Annie, Denise, Sarah, and I went around 12:30 (you’re really not supposed to anywhere early in France) we paid our 8 euros to get in, only to go down the stairs and find approximately five people there. But, we decided to stick it out for a while. Eventually more people came and we had fun with each other, although we probably will not be going back. After endlessly requesting Lady Gaga to the DJ (and having him play Bad Romance for us, but then played Beyoncé’s VideoPhone, ... read more

Monday was fabulous—I didn’t have class until 4 so I woke up leisurely and went downstairs to help myself to breakfast (yogurt and toast—obviously the bread is the homemade stuff). Then I found a bathroom on the first floor that I didn’t know was there before! Exciting! (A house with three bathrooms—I feel like that’s a lot! And there could potentially be another one attached to the parent’s room, but I feel like that’s one of the those things that I’ll never know for sure…) I met up with Allison, Denise, Maika, and Steph around 2 to check out the art exhibit that’s in the hôtel de ville right now (city hall) which is being advertised all over town—we went and it was sweet, but it was only like a room of modern art things, and ... read more

Today, Beatrice is teaching me how to solve a rubix cube. I’ve been working on it for about two hours now, and have not succeeded without her help (I did it with her about an hour and a half ago and she wrote down the formulas so that I could solve it myself. I’ve come close, only to mess up the last step and then start over again…but I am determined. My host dad told me that I have “courage” which can be translated to kind of mean persistence.) I am DETERMINED to learn how to do this. But I’m taking a break right now. But mark my words, the next time you see me, I will have successfully solved a rubix cube. I’m done with the Institut now! I celebrated by sleeping until 12:30 yesterday—it ... read more

Starting Monday, my schedule becomes more normal for the rest of the semester. And by more normal I mean, it rocks. This week is the worst week ever because we have our intense language classes at the Institut, and our real university classes are starting. Thank you Bucknell, for making them overlap. NOT. Yesterday I had class from 9-12, 1-6. Today, 9-11, 1-5. In all our free time (there was so much) Allison and I worked on our paper that’s due tomorrow—after slightly widening the margins, changing the font, and bolding the periods, we have four pages. (Single spaced…ish. Technically we put two spaces between each paragraph…haha.) I’m not normally a fan of lengthening essays this way, but in this case it was completely necessary, especially since the main point of the paper was to work ... read more

If you’ve never been to Europe, you might not know that their showers are completely different than ours. And by different, I clearly mean worse. When I first saw my shower here, it looked identical to American showers from the outside and I became very hopeful—it’s just a box with a door. However, upon opening the door, I was let down by the European shower system, which is a handheld showerhead. A lot of families’ showers at least have small hooks that you can hang the shower head on, even though it’s usually too low to be like a normal shower. But my shower doesn’t even have that. So yesterday I finally figured out that I could balance the shower head thing on my shoulder while I was washing my hair which kept me warmer and ... read more

The French don’t work…they have kids. Today we had class like any other day—it started at nine at the institute, with each of us presenting some sort of French article that we found (for homework). Today, Carl’s article was about how the French had “lost its reputation” as the place where the least amount of work was done. (Although it was still up there—only Germany and Holland beat France.) My article that I found was about how International Living magazine just announced that France is the number one country for quality of life. This spurred a discussion and our teacher telling us a lot more about French culture. Before you read this, make sure you’re ready to pack up and move to France RIGHT NOW. First of all, there is a MANDANTORY five weeks of vacation ... read more
