This past weekend we took some time to relax, and to catch-up with such mundane tasks as grocery shopping, laundry, and a much-needed session with my hair stylist (Dee), who has by now cut my hair in so many different places (around the world) that we've lost count! The weather continues to be mild during the day, still chilly in the evening, but the rain has stayed away. We also made arrangements for a day trip, on Tuesday of next week, with a local tour operator to visit several of the châteaux for which the Loire Valley is so renowned. In another travel-related matter, we've decided to depart Tours a day earlier than planned, and to fly via Ryanair from Tours to London (our final stop), instead of from Nantes. We did this to avoid the ... read more

Spring has finally sprung! The temperature in Tours reached 73 degrees by mid-afternoon, under mostly sunny skies, and we made the most of our good fortune. We decided to walk to the nearby Botanical Garden, and afterwards ride the #4 bus to reach the Château de Tours on the south bank of the Loire river. The Jardin botanique de Tours is a municipal botanical garden and arboretum, established in 1843, that occupies a plot of land along the western side of the Boulevard Tonnellé. Admission is free, and it turned out to be quite a bargain, because we spent more than an hour admiring the diverse array of flowers and plants, representing some 2000 taxonomic groups, which are spread out over 12 acres of lush lawns and gardens. There are also more than 150 kinds and ... read more

Today, which marks the 50th-day of our journey, we finally enjoyed some Springtime weather, with comfortable temperatures and mostly blue skies throughout the day. Vive la France! We struck out on foot at around 10:30 in the morning, with our first priority being to locate one of the stops where we could catch a public bus into the center of the city. After a 10-minute walk we found the bus stop, and a few minutes later boarded the #5 bus for a quick ride to the stop near the main train station and tourist information office, where we picked-up a few brochures and made some inquiries. We paused for a few minutes at the plaza in front of the impressive, 19th-century train station, where fountains and Japanese cherry trees are in full bloom; then walked inside ... read more

It was a long day, but our trip from Bruges to Tours went according to plan, without any surprises along the way. Our pick-up at 7:00 AM in Bruges, the drive to the Brussels airport, and the flight from Brussels to Nantes were uneventful and on-schedule. We were met by our taxi driver at Nantes, who delivered us to our apartment in Tours following a 2-hour drive through the countryside of the Loire Valley. Unfortunately, the wet weather that dogged us in Belgium followed us into France, as it rained throughout the drive to Tours. However, the rain did not dampen the warm welcome we received from our charming hostess, Sophie, who greeted us with fresh flowers and a bottle of champagne! After entering the gate into the grounds of her property, named by a previous ... read more

In the first little town Cathy saw a shop & shouted - there's a pottery & they have plates with cherries on, park somewhere! So, I went round the back of said town & parked opposite the church in the car park / boules / market area. We walked to the high street & found the shop. The pottery shop was an opticians (snort) & the plates were part of the window display (guffaw). To make me laugh even more & make this worthy of a blog entry, was that they were paper plates hahaha! Off we go taking the main road instead of the peage for a way as it followed it & it just seems nicer sometimes; thousands of acres of harvested wheat fields & yet to be harvested corn & sunflowers. The sunflowers ... read more

Nu voelen we ons pas pelgrims. We wijken af van de rivier en lopen de bergen in. We vullen onze camelia's nog aan het einde van het dorp en zetten onze tenten op het land van een boer. We eten eindelijk weer wat en komen helemaal tot rust. Opeens valt er een tor ... read more

Tours, Chateau de Chenonceau and Chambord in Loire Valley France on 18 September 2013 We drove further along the Loire Valley and arrived in Tours for coffee. We found yet another lovely town with a river flowing through it, a tram system, open avenues and an old town section. We drove down some of the little streets – always a slow, cautious task in the camper –and found a park. We went for a walk and came across a lot of interesting little shops and then came onto the main square where we found a coffee shop. All over its walls it had memorabilia, posters on walls, and umbrellas hanging from its ceiling. It also had great coffee. We then drove further through the city seeing its and walls, before heading out of town to see ... read more

It turns out that the LAST car of the train is generally reserved for bicycles. Thus, we disembarked about 300 feet from the actual train station. After Bill determined that there were NO CARTS, he decided that the time had come to assemble the bikes...which he was able to do in the hot sun in approximately one hour. It was clear as we clipped on our panniers, and fastened the bags that had carried the panniers, and balanced the boxes on the handle bars, that we had far too much luggage. We left the boxes as close to where the trash was supposedly supposed to be, and called our first SERVAS host: Annie. It turns out that Annie actually lives in a suburb of Tours and she didn't have a car, which we didn't understand until ... read more

Mon., Aug 26 - To Paris Thanks to George Fawcett, who drove us, we made it to JFK without a problem and were able to find a porter to haul our bikes and panniers, etc. to check-in. At the desk we learned we had been bumped up to business class which meant we had wide, reclining seats with leg rests and lumbar support. Ahh, the fates were with us. The flight to Paris was uneventful and we arrived thirty minutes early. We got carts and managed to negotiate our way to the Les Car du France bus stand where we got a bus to the Gare Montparnasse train station. Unfortunately, the bus did not drop us off directly in front of the station but rather we were deposited about a block away. Now we had two ... read more

We got away a little earlier than usual and after buying our baguettes and fillings we began the next leg of cycling by the Amboise Chateau, through the town and uphill past some very old houses before taking several turns to head out into the country - all in the name of staying off the main roads. It was a bit cooler in the morning with a nice wind blowing and shadows in our direction. We went through some forest and then into countryside mostly of grain growing but also dairying much like at home - the milking shed, large tractors, round bales of hay and a workers house (much better than is supplied to many farm workers in NZ). We eventually arrived at the Chateau de Chenonceau which is a must see, as chateaus go. ... read more
