Monday, September 10 - We got up and packed to leave Paris, as we had to go pick up our little cube, and our friends at the airport. On the train to the airport, with our luggage, I was sad leaving Paris, but knew that the fun was about to begin. The Ipad was charged, I had the car connector cords and the GPS had been programmed with the new “home” address. We were ready! Wendy and Ed popped out of the Customs area looking for us, but couldn’t see us even with a sign! Mind you, they had been up about 36 hours from Auckland - they were forgiven. First things first - on the road to stop for a coffee and pain au chocolat. YUM! On the motorway, flying down it about 110Kmh with ... read more

Day 14 and this is 2 weeks away....... A day in the Loire valley doing the castles here. But first things first - washing. Find a coin laundry very close tot the hotel we are staying and all systems go, until we can't read the instructions..... Luckily the man in the adjoining laundry (think he runs both) gives us change for the machines and smiles - most of the time. While we wait, we drive to a little village not too far away and get a coffee and drink for me from a bar (at 1100) - no beer but tempting. This with some nice chocolate croissant and other pastry thing for Chris and we are back to the washing. After many requests for change to fill the machines, the washing is completed and we are ... read more

We arrived in Tours by the train from Orleans. Unfortunately, after we got to Gare d Orleans, we discovered that the early train we thought we'd catch was affected by a strike. Christine and others had warned us that this was a frequent occurrence on the French railway system. The only other option that day was a later train from the other station, Les Aubrais, which left at 6:30pm. So we had the best part of another day in Orleans. I assembled my folding bike and attached the luggage to make moving about easier. We walked back to the cathederal square. There we had lunch at the Cafe Letutia, which we had eaten at the previous day on Christine's recommendation. There was a small demonstration in the square when we arrived. Loudspeakers and a small number ... read more

Monday was a day off and time to recover. We spent the morning relaxing at Christine's. Pierre-Louis and Clementine came over for lunch. It was good to meet Pierre-Louis and find out more about the family. He works in his father's packaging business. Clementine works for Xerox selling industrial printers in the Orleans area. They have long lunch breaks but work from early to late. It seems that lunch at Christine's is a regular occurrence. In the afternoon Dianne went for a long walk around the neighbourhood and I went for a long bike ride along the south back of the Loire. The bike trail runs atop an embankment which passes through farmland, across bridges over small tributaries and on to other towns upstream. On the return I discovered the L'ile Charlemagne (Isle of Charlemagne), which ... read more

today was the last day of my cycling trip. it was 70kms and i was cycling from Blois - Tours. i left the hotel around 9am this morning. it was a beautiful, balmy summers day, not a breath of wind or a cloud in the sky, it stayed thaat way for the entire day and it must have reached at least 30 as it was sweltering. so i biked through quite a few small villages, arms and alongside the river till i got to Amboise at around 11.30 when i got there i went and had a look at the Chateau and its grounds, it was a beautiful chateau, not big but still amazing. i spent a good hour and a half there having a look, i then decided to have some lunch before heading on ... read more

Our last and final day in France. Tomorrow we will be on our way back to good old Germany. We started our day early and went out so visit one of the most famous castles of the Loire: The Chateau de Chambord. Luckily we were quite early, so there were not many tourists there yet and we had some more time and space to walk around. The castle was originally build in the 16th century and was later renovated. It belonged to the French kings and was used as a hunting lodge. We had a quick walk through the rooms and from the roof we were able to see the large and wide gardens. The castle was surrounded by forest and grassland and on one of them there was an international hunting exhibition on at that ... read more

Today we went with Phillipe to tours. We arrived in Tours around 12 so we meet up with Nicole (Phillipes partner) and had lunch. We had lunch in this really nice and sunny outside area with heaps of other restaurants there as well. The only bad thing about it was that there was this really really drunk homeless man who kept going up to people and when he was near us he was trying to kiss everyone and he couldn't even walk properly and I'm surprised no one did anything although in France there are no alcohol bans like in some places in New Plymouth. After lunch we went shopping down the main street in Tours. Then we went back home and had tea. At 8pm we went to a guitar concert in Vendome that Phillipe ... read more
