Another day in Tours! Yesterday and today were both beautiful days in Tours! No rain, no snow, and some sun here and there! Yesterday seven of us went out to lunch and had pizza—I had a 4 cheese pizza—including goat cheese! (Now you can’t get that at dominoes!) It was nice to relax for a while after our 3 hour class in the morning, which consists of an hour of listening to each other and the radio (and then trying to determine what the radio new report was saying), an hour of grammar (right now figuring out the many many ways that the French can speak in the past tense), and an hour of “methodologie” as in figuring out how to write an essay in French—which is actually completely different than writing an essay in English. ... read more

Salut mes amis! The last three days have seemed like three weeks. It’s hard to believe that I haven’t even been here one week yet! Although my sleep schedule is just barely adjusted—this morning was the first day my alarm woke me up at 7:15. Sunday and Monday I woke up around 4 again (but stayed in my room away from the creaky stairs) and yesterday I only woke up maybe a half hour before my alarm—now I just need to work on actually being able to stay up past 10… Sunday I went to Catholic mass with the family, in a huge Cathedral that was beautiful! The service was held downstairs, in the crypt for St. Martin (of Tours). I guess the service is held in the crypt because it’s slightly smaller (and while there ... read more

This morning I woke up at 3 am and couldn’t get back to sleep, and I had no idea when my family gets up in general, but I didn’t want them to be up and doing things and me secluding myself in my room. I decided that 8 would probably be a good time to go downstairs with a book and then I could wait in the living room or dining room reading. So I quietly opened my door and started down the staircase. However, quietly is NOT an adjective that can be used with this particular set of stairs. With each step I felt like I was waking up the dead, so I tried to walk slower, but that just made the noises last longer. I finally got down to the second floor—which is where ... read more

Hello friends! I survived my first day and it is absolutely FABULOUS here. I sadly didn’t get to sleep on the plane from Newark to Paris, but the Bucknell professor here (Professor Westbook) picked us up from the airport in a large bus and I slept for the entirety of the three hour drive to Tours. Tours is beautiful, although for a European it probably looks like any other town. There is a trace of snow on the ground from some crazy weather they’ve had over the past week. (It’s usually Oregon weather here—lots of rain, but not usually cold enough for snow.) The bus pulled off to the side of the road next to La Loire river, and we waited for our French families to come pick us up. It was a Friday, so just ... read more

Bonsoir a tous! :) The day finally came when I had to say goodbye to my amazing students. I finished all my cards for them and mentally prepared myself by saying it wasn’t goodbye…that I would see them again and most definitely stay in contact. I did VERY well…I shocked myself by keeping it together all day long! The students were amazing...each class surprised me with cake and candy and chocolate and they all gave me kisses at the end! There was a class of all boys that I saw only one time and they all surprised me too by coming in the last five minutes of another class. I took TONS of pictures and they are all already finding me on facebook. I will never forget them…they’ve taught me so much and I hope to ... read more

Bonjour a tous!! I hope you are all healthy and happy as always. Things have been crazy around here the past few weeks. I can honestly say, that since my move, I have been the happiest I have ever been throughout my stay here in france. I walk around with a smile on my face all the time and have completely adapted to life and everyone here. I hope you all had a fantastic Thanksgiving. I confess that I was sort of dreading the holiday. It was my first time away from home and the fact that Thanksgiving doesn’t exist over here made it even worse. Well, let me tell you…I have never been so surprised or touched. The morning of Thanksgiving was just as normal as every other Thursday has been. I woke up, ... read more

BONSOIR A TOUS!!!!!!! I'm so sorry it's been over a week since I last wrote! Things are mellowing down a bit for me right now and I didn't want to be saying the same things all the time in my blogs. So I figured I'd wait to update you all on the past week and a half before Toussaint! Let's see, where to begin... Jackie came to visit me last weekend!! She's placed in Creteil (paris suburb) and this experience has been a huge culture shock for her. Here in France, suburbs and cities are flip flopped. For example, the wealthy people in Paris live in the city where as our "inner-city" people live in the suburbs. Anyways, she came to visit me for my birthday and we spent all day Saturday in town and drank ... read more

Bonsoir!!!!!!!!!!! First, I'd like to say a BIG thank you for the birthday wishes and comments. :) It makes my day to read a little piece of home. :) I had to write today because somethings were just too good to wait until next week! I woke up this mornng with so many birthday wishes and skype voicemails that made me feel so unbelievably happy and loved. After a few tears of joy, I got ready for my first Literature Class as a student with the students I work with. I'm very familiar and comfortable taking French classes at the University of Akron because it's with the same people who are all American. I was so nervous for my class today. The students see me as this confident person who speaks English with them and were ... read more

Bonsoir a tous!!!!!!!!!!!! How are you all?! I haven't been hearing from you lately and it makes me sad! Not that I'm looking for comments about what I've written...but I do miss hearing about you and how you are! I get homesick sometimes and it's nice to see messages from home. It keeps me going. :) Everything is great still in beautiful Tours! I can't believe it's the middle of October already and that I'm actually in good spirits! haha! I can't even begin to express how much I miss home though. Only a week and a half left before mommy comes and I'm so unbelievably excited!!!! I'm going to be that American who makes the biggest scene when I see her! :) This past week and weekend were really great! School is wonderful...the routine is ... read more

Bonsoir a tous!!! After rereading some of my blogs, I realized that the things that stick out the most in my head don't come across as the most pleasant! I just wanted to write to stress how truly happy I am here. No, they don't shower often, but that's because they don't like to waste water. The French way of living is very natural and green. I've learned to not waste as much and the importance of saving electricity. I'm living in such a beautiful city, with a wonderful and loving host family, eating the most delicious and healthy food, drinking the most amazing wine, learning the purest French, and teaching over 100 students how to speak English. At 22 years old, I'd say thats pretty good! Believe me, anything unfortunate that goes on here is ... read more
