23 March, Bonjour, It has been an amazing week in Europe, with plenty of new experiences had, I have seen sights in Amsterdam and Paris to make the average motorist wonder how on earth does this work, organized chaos if you ask me! Both Amsterdam and Paris are full of bikes and motorbikes mingling with cars and pedestrians and it is incredible that everyone seems to know how it works Driving has been pretty good with my wonderful ladies to guide me as I try and remember to stay right and watch for bikes but the roads are great, however, although I am now fluent in 3 words of French, the Rd/St signs could use a little work. Speaking to locals is still confined to the 3 words and a hasty exit. I am still amazed ... read more

The name of my street is Clocheville. It is located very near the heart of old town Tours and there is very rarely a parking spot within three blocks. When I first arrived i had the choice between two places, neither one of which seemed at first glance to be very homey. The difference between the two was simple; the first choice was older, more rustic, and lacked conveniences like a shower or a washing machine; while the second choice was compact, sterile, and had everything to make life easy. The more rustic of the two was within walking distance to most of the interesting things in the city and it had a familiar smell that seemed to be like an old friend welcoming me in. Maybe it was the bigger kitchen or maybe just the ... read more

One week ago today my future was very uncertain. I had arrived only a couple days before and was on day number two of a try out. I was still feeling the effects of jet lag and had not fully adjusted to the rich french cuisine. I had been working hard but on the second day of the try out I did not feel like I was playing as well as I should and thoughts of being sent home were starting to creep in through the frustration. In fact to end my second day of training I missed two serves in a row and my side lost. A quick stretch and a long walk to the locker room was followed by an even longer walk back as someone told me the general manager and head coach ... read more

And the saying goes, "practice makes perfect." If thats the case then getting my stuff in a bag, tying up loose ends, and saying my good-byes should be similar to a hot knife through butter. Instead it feels more like I'm pulling my head out of a jumbo sized Chinese-finger-trap whilst walking through a large vat of quicksand. Throw in a stomach full of gluten, shake and bake in a plane for 10 hours and Vua-la!! ......the adventure begins. If you didnt understand all that basically heading out here was hard. If you dont know where "here" is, allow me to update everyone on my status. A couple of weeks ago I got a call from an agent saying there was a team in France that may be interested in my services. After much debate and ... read more

Thursday August 26, 2010 Episode 2 (by Craig) Bonjour, mon petits fromages.... No, thats not right. Lets try again.... Bonjour à tous, nous sommes maintenant dans le beau pays de France.... Hello everyone, we are now in the beautiful country of France. After a weekend in London recovering from jetlag, we flew to Tours, 230km South West of Paris (on RyanAir - the European version of Tiger; but with puke-inducing canary yellow throughout the cabin). Tours is where the conference was being held. Tours (pronounced Toor) is a very pretty provincial French City. It was generally OK; The conference ended today. Ross sat in on my talk, which he said was excellent, and he wanted to stand up at the end of it and shout out : That was my fella ! It was the first ... read more

June 23 We arrived in Potiers at 6am and there was a noticeable difference in the temperature. It was cold, but that was nice as it had been so hot in Seville and even in Madrid. We went into the station and found the train to Tours didn’t leave for another half an hour so we had a little wait before leaving for our destination. Our train arrived in Tours around 8:30. We oriented ourselves on the map. Filip asked someone directions and we were on the right path toward our hotel. We got to the hotel around 9 am, too early to check in, but they allowed us to leave our bags until we could come back and check in around 1pm. We went to the tourist office and got info about the Chateaus and ... read more

Today I amazingly woke up at 8 am feeling fully rested! I went downstairs to start my day with the standard homemade bread with honey and a small yogurt and found my host mom in the kitchen in the middle of making a new batch of bread for the week. We chatted for a bit, and then I went back to my room to attempt to write my paper on the French environmental policies. After being less than productive, I met Allison for lunch at our favorite pasta place—Francesca’s—in Place Plume. We mapped out today to see Tours a little better—we went to the Museum of Natural History, the Wine Museum, and the Chateau in Tours—all of which were hilarious in their own way. The first floor of the Museum of Natural History seemed like a ... read more

The week after April break we had great weather in Tours. Monday and Tuesday I met up with the “cool” side of town (obviously my side) and we went to Monoprix (our favorite one stop shop for all our French needs) and got bagettes, ham, cheese, and chocolate—perfect components for the perfect picnic. We met the rest of the BEFers at the Prebends park (close to where everyone else lives) and enjoyed the sunlight and being completely reunited after such a long time apart in April. We were just sitting in the grass, chatting, when an old man came up to us and starting speaking to us in English. I don’t know if he wanted to practice his English or what, but he enlightened us about how that park is the most beautiful one in all ... read more

The time in Tours between Normandy and heading off to Berlin went by quickly, but there were a few highlights. The weather turned nice again! It was bring and sunny and I felt like I would never need to look at my winter clothes again. I kind of realized that when I packed to come here I was thinking more about the winter and less about the spring...so I might have to go shopping and buy a few things because I only have about 4 short sleeved shirts here. Whoops. This week was Bucknell's spring break and my friend Thom from school did a little Eurotrip! He visited his friend from home in Switzerland, then went to see his cousin in Ireland, and was able to squeeze in a day between the two visiting me in ... read more

Sorry I haven’t been such a diligent writer lately, so here are just a few highlights of my last two weeks in Tours: 1. Giving my host sisters their presents from Ireland. I got Bea a rubix cube with sheep on it and Marguerite sheep slippers and their reactions were absolutely fabulous! Apparently Marguerite has always wanted slippers like that and I had guessed the right size! Yay! 2. Everyone’s favorite Professor: Jean-Nöel Billard, coming through on his promise. The first Thursday back from break he brought our class of me, Allison, Denise, and Mackenzie a bottle of Rosé wine which we drank during class like it was no big deal. He’s probably one of the nicest professor’s I’ve even had, but also one of the most boring lecturers and of us have ever experienced… 3. ... read more
