ss Catherine – Burgundy Woke up this morning in the village of Macon. On the bus at 8.30 for the beautiful trip through the Burgundy countryside to the village of Beaune. We passed on a detour through the lovely little village of Torne half way between the North and the South of France – a good place to stop for lunch (sort of like Hamilton only nothing like Hamilton)with a Michelin star restaurant. I never knew before Michelin star = 1 star for food, 2 stars food and service, 3 stars for hotel; too. So in future go for the one star Michelin its cheaper and you still get the best food. We passed the little village of Dijon (this is appellation AOC) heartland. Arrived and the village of Beaune. Very lovely and we arrived on ... read more

Thursday 7 July 2016 Warm sunshine greeted us yet again this morning. After breakfast, Neville drove us to Beaune, about a 30 minute drive south from Dijon. The main reason for this trip was to visit the old hospice, the Hotel-Dieu, a palace for the poor. There is now a new hospital in the area but its forebear has never been forgotten. The words from a booklet, ‘In the Footsteps of the Dukes of Burgundy’ describe it this way…. “With its world-famous, annually held wine auction, the Hotel-Dieu in Beaune is also an amazing charitable institution. Founding it was a remarkably astute political move by Nicolas Rolin, chancellor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, who bestowed it on the inhabitants of Beaune in 1443. It was intended to provide them with relief in times of ... read more

Slow start, breakfast then we are off to another town in the Burgundy region for another town and wine tasting. Find out that the Burgundy region produces 65% of its wine as Charonnay and the other 35% as Pinot Noir. Hmmmm..... Anyway, we are the first for the wine tasting. Not too sure about this as a bit dusty from last night. We get to the wine house after many cobbled stone streets, then wait. Wait. Wait. Turns out the wine guide has the wrong time. Eventually we are in with a very frustrated tour guide. Tour starts with the General Manager talking to us. Down into some really good cellars that are not dressed up for tourists, then up again for tastings with the real wine tour guide. Apologies and we start tasting with a ... read more

Steadily heading north we finally bit the bullet and rang Eurotunnel. We got a crossing for Thursday at 1.19 which gives us a day to get to Beaune and visit the town, another day to get a few hours from Calais and a short hop, skip and a jump on Thursday morning for the train . £43 paid that was the easy bit. The hard bit was trying to contact them. The British number would not work neither would the french one. We tried times many and got various messages in French which we could not understand or got a beep and then silence. Never had this before. Still there is a first time for everything. Eventually after much trying , many permutations of the numbers the nice man the other side answered and took our ... read more

It's a beautiful sunny day with a cool breeze to keep you comfortable. In the morning, we visited the Musee de l'Hotel-Dieu. It is a former charitable hospital with one the finest examples of French 15th century architecture.. The museum has a wonderful audio program that was very informative. The tile roofs were beautiful. That afternoon we strolled around town and headed out to some trails among the vineyards. That evening we of course sampled some of the wine from that region. Some of these photos are of homes in the area that reflect the influence of the l"Hotel-Dieu.... read more

3 Countries, 6 Trains and 11 hours later we have arrived in the heart of Burgundy country. What a trip! We went to Milan, past Lake Maggiore in the north of Italy, Lake Thunersee in Switzerland. Past Bern and finally Basel. Then over to Dijon and a short hop to Beaune. Saw some snow covered mountains and quaint Swiss homes right out of Heidi stories. One train we took got up to almost 200 miles per hour.... read more

This morning I went to the nearby boulangerie to buy a croissant and pain-et-chocolat for my breakfast. I couldn't see paying €20 for breakfast at the hotel. That is over $22. I enjoyed my fresh pastry and then drove south to the Soane River. I had it in mind that I might go there if I had time on this trip, but I hadn't counted on it. In fact, my plans only took me as far as Troyes, so everything I do from here on is "bonus"! I wanted to see the Soane because I was here once before, in 1990, on a barge trip with Maggie and our friends the Colwells and Butzers. It was a memorable time as we cruised upriver through the French countryside. One of the places we stopped was Auxonne whose ... read more

No, Ranskassa vauvojen purkkiruuat on kyllä monipuolisempia kuin Suomessa.

Mon Apr 22. Beaune . We were on the road at 0730 hours today, heading south-east in the general direction of Lyon, some 465 km distant. As our giant, 60-passenger bus threaded its way through Parisian urban and suburban Monday morning traffic, tour director Cindy began the first of her cheery, incredibly detailed and informative discourses on matters that were relevant to the leg of the trip for that day. Our first stop for this day was to be for a washroom break at a "Services" centre somewhere along the A6 highway. Cindy advised that such centres in France bear little relation to their North American counterparts, the French version being clean, well organized, and offering some unique local shopping specialities. Our stop this morning featured nougat candy, and there were indeed aisles upon aisles of ... read more

There are times when one must lead and there are times when one must follow. I was definitely contented to play second fiddle on a work trip to Burgundy with my company's head buyer, Neil Sommerfelt. He is a Master of Wine - the highest academic qualification for wine available. There are currently exactly 300 Masters of Wine - and many more people have managed to scale Everest than have beaten the infamously fiendish MW exams and the universally feared blind-tastings. I am a few rungs down the ladder from Neil, but I still managed to get the gig as his right-hand-man. I was determined to play a significant role as Neil engaged in a two day break-neck pace tour of ten wineries in two days, as I could offer the extremely useful "ignorant person" point-of-view. ... read more
