Lacanau ocean 8th - 12th July, 4 star camping!!!! This was a great way to start the holiday, the camp site was very smart, the weather was great and Chris managed to catch some waves! We decided to go for a cycle through the forest around lacanau and to the lake with a beach. Mary-Anne hadn't ridden a bike for at least 10 years so you can imagine what her butt felt like afterwards. ... read more

After our 4 star camping this was a bit different! The campsite was mostly French people, the night entertainment was cool, we did salsa dancing, french karaoke and had a english rock and roll band! The waves were small so Chris started reading and we even played some badminton!... read more

We spent Friday, 11 Jan, in Biarritz, France, which is a mere 30km or so from San Sebastian. The town bustles in the summertime when many Europeans flock to its lovely beach. ... read more

After the wettest summer on record we decided it was time to give England the arse and head for something that reminded us of home.... sunshine and surf! Destination: Biarritz, France. Just to give you a bit of background - The seaside resort of Biarritz is on the west coast of France, about 15 minutes from the Spanish boarder. It made a name for itself in the 19th century when Napolean III and his wife used to hang out there. It's been one of THE places to go for weathly French families for years and nowadays everyone is coming to check out the place that has some of Europe's best surfing and water sports. Us included! So we left the raining, windy London behind and made the 1.5 hour flight down to Biarritz praying for some ... read more

The title of this entry is appropriate for two reasons: 1) I went to France for the whole day today; and 2) These are the only two useful phrases I know in French (there is one more, but saying “Shut your mouth” is only useful in so many situations). Some of my friends and I took a bus for only 16€ from Bilbao, Spain, to Biarritz, France. It was a little less than a 3 hour drive and because both France and Spain are EU countries, I might as well have been driving from Illinois to Wisconsin—no passport needed (Just one more reason I like the EU: Free movement of people, goods, and money between EU countries). Despite my lack of knowledge of French, it was relatively easy to communicate with shop owners in Biarritz. ... read more

So the last stop in our excursion was to a French costal village called Biarittiz. It is a lot like San Sebastian, it is a beach city, big for vacactioning. We were only going to be there an hour with USAC, but we had the option to find our own hotel and stay. So of course I did that. My friends Jill, Kate and I found a good hotel for pretty cheap and had a fabulous time! We just walked around the city a lot, mostly by the beach, because there are so many restaurants and shops around there. There was even a casino, but we couldn't afford to lose any money... I'm going broke as it is! We bought some French bourdeux wine and drank some while getting ready. Then we ate at a ... read more

Sooo... a little more about the witch caves we went to see: During the Spanish Inquisition, Isabel and Ferdinand made everyone convert to Catholicism or leave Spain. Many people living in the Basque Country had a religion that was more or less a pagan religion. It revolved around the seasons, the harvest, you know stuff like that... So to many people they could be seen as 'witches'. During the Inquisition, anyone could accuse anyone of being a witch without proof. So if you were amde at your neighbor for not keeping their yard up (or something along those lines) you could turn them in to the government. So in the end many people were burned at the stake, or if they ran away they were burned in effigy... they would burn a doll of you ... read more

This was an amazing weekend overall. We got to travel to France among many other things. First, it was my friend Christina's 21st birthday on Tuesday and since we are good students we did not celebrate until Friday night. We did the traditional tapas crawl (here they are called pinchos), where you have a tapas (little appetizer) or two and a drink at one bar and then you move on and do this at several bars. It was a really fun way to see the city, we did this throughout Parte Vieja (the old part of town) and saw some places that we had not explored yet. The wine here is so cheap, it is a euro or two per glass, I mean it is not the ebst quality, but we are not wine connoisseurs ... read more

St EMILION to BIARRITZ - 9th May 2007 (Wednesday St Emilion 23º Sunshine& Biarritz 27º Sunshine) We are not keen to depart Chateau Franc Pourret but it is time to move on. St Emilion matches every expectation that one might associate with driving in the south of France - it is with regret that we leave people and places that we will never forget. My savvy navvy points us in the direction of Bordeaux but we skirt the City and take ‘périphérie’ (ring road) and head towards Archacon, which is on the coast (this is the way recommended to us by Catherine Ouzoulias). We drive through any number of small coastal villages that would be full to bursting had it been peak season and emerge on the other side of civilisation into pine forests that are ... read more
