Alsace?...where…and why? This was the question after, “Where are you off to next?”- not only from fellow Kiwis but those we met during our travels. Alsace is a region in France where the River Rhine forms the eastern boundary with Germany. It has been disputed and fought over by the two countries for centuries, sometimes being part of Germany, sometimes ‘taken back’ by France. This makes it interesting in several ways – cuisine and customs reflect the heritage of both countries and the hundreds of little villages which have in varying degrees survived the ravages of many conflicts including two world wars are like living museums of medieval Franco-Bavarian architecture. But our main reason for visiting was to sample the magical wine of Alsace. It’s no mystery why gewürztraminer, the most famous wine of the region, ... read more

Well, we're back in France as promised. Left Switzerland just as the skies were beginiing to clear and arrived in the beautiful Alsace region of France Sunday afternoon. After a pleasant stroll and a great lunch we did our laundry while we waited for the owners of our pension to return from their vineyards. Monday we went to a great museum with some Martin Schongauer works and the world famous Isheim alterpeice. We also rode bikes around town and Lizzie did some clothes shopping. The whole town is just so quaint and picturesque, and our pension is just like the rest of the town - not a square corner, a straight street or a non-sagging roof anywhere!... read more

It was only a hop, step and a jump from the ecomuseum to Colmar. We had picked the campsite near the river due to its location within walking distance of the city and the public transport which stopped outside the camp. We also wanted to use it as a base for two days in which we could go to Strasburg. The journey into Colmar was lovely with the hillsides covered in vines. Every village was pristine. A lovely church, storks nests on top of the Mairie or the church. Flowers everywhere, in gardens and in public flower beds. There was certainly a sense of pride about this region and everyone played their part keeping it clean, neat and tidy. When we arrived at our camping site the young receptionist was just leaving for lunch. We had arrived ... read more

We paid our bill, washed the back window of the van which was filthy, unplugged everything and set off for Colmar with a detour on the way to see the Ecomuseum which is situated in the small town of Ungersheim to the north of Mulhouse and on our way to our next stop Colmar. We are starting to notice that we heading home. it is beginning to feel more northern European than southern. The temperature has dropped considerably. We are not sun worshippers but the tans are beginning at times to look distinctly rusty. The scenery on the way was wonderful as we entered the Vosges with vines plying their way up each hill or as they are known locally as the Ballons. They did look like balloons if you used your imagination. Beautiful scenery at ... read more

Yesterday evening after a long day at school, I had the English lessons over in Colmar, which Daniele had asked me to come along to. I hadn't hesitated in saying yes when she asked me - as much as I don't really like speaking in front of lots of people, somehow when I'm in a teaching situation, it's different and I feel more confident. However, as the time drew nearer I did start to get very nervous especially when the students started arriving. They were all very curious about who I was and what I was doing there, dressed what must have seemed a bit strangely - I was wearing a white shirt and black skirt with a Welsh shawl pinned around my shoulders with a daffodil (the lesson was evidently Wales-based) - I chose to ... read more

Annecy and its mountainous surroundings, though so like home, could not hold me stationary for long and indeed I began to feel "antsy". (To get the joke, think on pronunciation.) And so off to... Well that answer was rather difficult to decide. I wanted very badly to head towards Beaune and its nearby pilgrimage sight but somehow it seems pilgrims these days are expected to be rich and able to afford the fanciest of accommodations. Not falling beneath either category, it seems my steps were fated to take another direction. And so I found myself in Colmar, a German jewel of a city, craftily covered in a French varnish in the Alsace region. I am an hour south of Strasbourg, an important EU center and close enough to pole-jump over into Germany. (Ok, not REALLY.) With ... read more

New York taki Özgürlük anıtı... read more

(this is also written in Strasbourg on 22/9) petit Corentin was apparently concerned he might not see me before he left for school so I made sure I got up at 7.45am to say goodbye. The girls had already gone so did not see them again. He was a little disappointed that I did not really speak French much - this is because it was simpler to speak English with Gisele (who is now teaching German so had apologised in advance for her English - but no problem there) and Francois - who was concerned that this might upset his German when he went back to work. He works a more family friendly 4 day week, with Monday off. The Swiss normal week is 42 hours surprisingly. Gisele works all 5 days but with different hours. ... read more

We spent the last three days in the Alsace region of France near the German border in a town called Colmar. This region is known for its white wines, German style food and architecture style. Our first stop was the Unterlinden Museum. Rick Steves, the travel book writer, says that this is one of the best museums in France and it is certainly very interesting. An audioguide comes with the entry fee and is very well done. The museum itself is at least 150 years old; some of the audioguide entries mention that a particular painting was donated in 1850. It is also a very eclectic collection…everything from medieval paintings to furniture to suits of armour to modern art. They even moved the interiors of a couple of buildings into the museum. The centerpiece is a ... read more

Day 3……On the way to Colmar, France….after a fantastic breakfast with fantastic views we were on our way to Colmar, France. We had a little bit of a difficult road change which forced me into a power U-Turn, which brought me to an intersection which I found out was a no left turn intersection. This of course was a mere moment of excitement for Gail (she will kill me this year) after I made an illegal left turn and ran over some little bitty rubber things with reflectors on them that separated lanes (Alana tell Loraine she would be proud). Gail is now taking over…They were not little bitty, but tall, at least two feet maybe be bigger, reflectors…I could not believe that Larry ran over three of them… Thank goodness it did not hurt ... read more
