So this morning I was planning on having the usual lazy Sunday that is so normal in Finland, when Emma picked up the Helsingin Sanomat (newspaper) and said “It’s Turku Paivä!”. I asked her right away what she was talking about and she said it was Turku Day which means every shop in Turku is opened even though its Sunday, there are bands playing and the market is packed with different booths! (kind of like the growers market x 20!) Of course I was interested instantly and asked her for all the specifics! I was definitely going, no matter what. I txted all my Finnish friends but everyone was busy, sick or broke :( so I txted some other exchange students in our district! Danie (the Aussi) txted me back immediately saying “call me” so I ... read more

There was another home hockey game today! It was great! Aikka and Anssi told me a couple days ago jokingly that they didn’t want me to come and see them lose because the team they were going to play is really good! Of course I said I was coming anyway so on Saturday morning I got up at 11 and started to get ready! I first spent a little time cleaning then showered and got some warm clothes on to face the rain! Maiju and Aikka txted me and told me about a music festival at Tulli (youngsters place, right near the bus station in Naantali) I txted Max (who wanted to see his first hockey game today) and told him where I would be. He met me there and we listened to some hardcore punk ... read more

up at 2.45am and an €18 cab ride to the bus station. They add €5 as we had prebooked our cab the night before to pick us up at 3.30am. bus left at 4am. 2.5 hrs later we are at the airport. We checked in and waited for our flight. There´s not alot of people travelling to the ukraine so we only had a small plane and were ferried to our plane by bus. Short stroll over the tarmac to board our flight. Less than 2 hrs later we are touching down in kiev. Airport staff are complete wankers. There was a guy just behind us, from melbourne no less and he travels to the ukraine on business alot. He wanted to apologise there and then, in advance, for the poor service we were going to ... read more

another late start. Up at 9.30am and off for a run. Another yum scrambled egg with sausages for brekky. We´ve decided to stay here an extra night. We were going to go to Helsinki today and stay there and g oto the airport from there. As it turns out, the hotel we thought was in Helsinki is actually in espoo. My uncle advised us that it would be a nightmare to try and get to the airport from there. As it turns out, there are buses which run from turku direct to the airport and there is one at 4am which will get us there at 6.25am. perfect! We took off for a trip to an electrical goods store, kinda like harvey norman back home. i never checked my video camera before we left oz and ... read more

This morning at school I gave a few presentations to an English class in the Junior High. On my way to meet some friends in the media room I almost slipped on this big red carpet someone had layed down the middle of the hall. I pulled myself together then looked around. Almost everyone I saw was wearing a costume. There was royalty and pirates everywhere. Everyone was wearing crowns! The first person I recognized was Niko so I asked him what was going on; he told me it was TJ 100 Day. (of course I had no idea what that was) I was about to ask him what that meant but I was pulled in to a group of kids to get a picture taken. I got myself out of the mob near the door ... read more

Today was busy, confusing and fun! It is testing week at school so everyone is supposed to arrive at 10:15 today and tomorrow. I woke up at 8am to get ready and they at 10am I realized I had two free periods at 10:15….dang. I could have slept another two hours! That’s ok though because I found time to write this!!! I went in at 11:45 and went straight to lunch with Saija, Maiju, Lotta, Aapo, and Hannah. I had one period of Math after that, then I came home again to get ready for my Rotex meeting in Turku! (Rotex are the Finnish students that have been on foreign exchange and have now returned! In our district Elina is our Rotex! She went to Australia!) I had a snack then rode my bike to the ... read more

We woke up at 10 this morning! SO EARLY! (gosh, coming from someone who is usually up at the break of dawn…what is Finland doing to me?) We made breakfast and showered then spent half an hour searching the house for all of Max’s belongings! Oh! And he ended up leaving a pair of socks, a pair of pants, the “M” key off his laptop, and his sweatshirt. Goodness! Max caught the bus back to Turku and I came home to continue reading on Finland! Emma and Tapio came and picked me up around 4 to go visit my host Ukki and Mummi! (grandpa and grandma Erkki!). They were both very nice people! We had kahvi and some kind of fish on bread and pieni omena cakes (small apple cakes). It was really good stuff! It’s ... read more

Saturday This morning I was home alone again because Emma had to go to work and all my friends from Naantali were tired because of the party last night, so I txted Max. I went for a run, and when I was half way around my usually loop Max txted me back saying he wasn’t busy and I could come over! YAY PAIMIO! I ran home and showered, then rode my bike in the rain to the bus stop and caught the nest bus to Turku! There I walked around for half an hour waiting for the next bus to Paimio. The trip to Paimio took about 40 minutes and it was FULL of farms, barns, trees shaped like people, and cows. When I was near the city center I saw Max out my window and ... read more

Mom and Dad. I love you. You are both so amazing! Yesterday I had an early Christmas. I got home from school and Erkki said my package was here! He told me it was at customs because Mom had put gummy vites in it and I needed to go down to the harbor and declare them! I waited until Leena got home from work, we ate dinner and then Leena and I drove to the harbor. After getting lost in the harbor building and taking a SCARY lift up to the 4th floor we found the customs office. The lady laughed when I showed her what kind of vitamins were inside my package; she said they were fine! I could barely carry the package down the lift to the car it was so big! I almost ... read more

I got out of school early today like usual Fridays, and I rode my bike to the Kuvaus in town to get my photograph taken for my student ID! It only took a few minutes to get them printed so I taped one onto my student ID application and went to the Posti to mail it! When I got home I made myself some lunch and read my new book on Finland Mommy sent me for a few hours; I learned so much! I started getting homesick around 4pm so I txted Maiju, Lotta, and Saija and told them I would be town by the harbor if they wanted to walk around with me! Maiju and Saija were busy but Lotta was eating at Hesburger nearby so she said she would come down when she finished! ... read more
