i started school today! it was crazy. everyone dresses SO different. and they are all the same style its wierd. the guys wear long jeans but they roll them up to their knees. then the guys that play ice hockey tuck them into their socks. all the girls dress up for school. its very eruopean. i didnt really experience any finnish classes today because everyone was getting their schedules, but i start tomorrow! i did however have to introduce myself to the whole student body. that was ummm...fun? lol. well now everyone knows me! i met with my rotary counsler yesterday and she took me to school. my school counsler had me make a list of the classes i like and the classes i dont so she can make me a schedule for tomorrow! i ate ... read more

hey all! im here at my host parents house in Naantali! the first day i got here i went on a boat ride to a couple islands with my host parents, went swimming in the sea and dived off the dock near my house, and went out to eat dinner at a finnish resturaunt at the harbor. i really like naantali. it is so pretty and green. my house is only a 2 min walk from the dock where i can swim...even though is it really really cold water :) i got used to it really quickly! my room is on the second level of my house. it is kind of like a loft. really pretty and colorful. i have a window that looks out to the neighbors house and the road to the dock. i ... read more

Turku Triumph Europe » Finland » Turku By jessie_eliciaMay 24th 2007Jessie Smith Hey everyone! Sorry for the long delay in writing. I have been busy finishing the pavilion, moving it to Turku, attending the gallery opening, travelling across Scandinavia, moving to Ireland, and starting a new job. Whew. So here's the first bit, the finished pavilion in all its glory, standing triumphantly in Turku for the next three months with an uncertain future beyond that. The erection went fairly smoothly and the press conference was a breeze. It was a very exciting day seeing the opening of the exhibition... here is a small selection of the hundreds I have.... oops, ... read more

Two full weeks of construction and we are now done! I am physically and mentally exhausted and ready for a weekend off but I'm also really happy about how the project turned out. The space feels the same as I had imagined it but the lighting is more spectacular. We packed the two pieces onto two trucks on Tuesday morning and drove them to Turku asap. We worked from about 12 - 9 and were almost done when we went home for dinner. We had a great italian meal at an amazing restaurant and then went out dancing to celebrate. It was like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders that night seeing the structure in place. Wednesday morning we finished up the work in Turku and headed back to Helsinki. We are now ... read more

Hey everyone! Had a busy week so far and have lots of pictures to post for you. I want to start with a little explanation of 'site' for my non-architectural friends and family since I sprung that term on you last week. For each design project we are assigned there is a proposed site for the building to be located on. Normally we go to the site and measure and take pictures of it and the site influences the design of the building. In the case of the sauna project which I mentioned last week this is a hypothetical site as there will be no actual construction happening. In the case of the pavilion we are designing in Turku one design proposal from my classmates and I will be chosen to be constructed. We will be ... read more

The adventure is nearing. After months of searching the internet, traveling to various coastal cities, we found the perfect boat in Finland. It's a 515 Nauticat (currently in dry dock at the Nauticat yard in Turku, just outside Helsinki). Now, we wait until the Baltic Sea thaws, then we set sail! The boat sale was official September 15th, 2006.... read more
