Monday 30th August 2010 Not a bank holiday here and now we are in low season fairly quiet and cheaper to camp ! Having said that Denmark is quite expensive for normal day to day things. Today beautiful blue skies and a fresh breeze as we head up the coast towards Esbjerg. Half an hour and twenty miles brings us to Ribe founded 1300 years ago and home to the Vikinge Center. This living museum is designed to give the visitor an impression of how the local population lived in the year 980 AD. Following a fantastic day here we drove north to Esbjerg and set up at a site just north of the town. Just about the best equipped site we have ever stayed at with a playground to die for, heated swimming pool and ... read more

Sunday 29th August 2010 Sunny Sunday morning and after a slow start we set off up the coast to the island of Romo. This lies off the west coast of Denmark and is connected to the mainland by a five mile causeway. Visit to the Kommandeurhof ( Captains's House ) at Toftum which was built in 1748. The house was owned by a wealthy sea captain who made his fortune from trade and whaling. The rooms containing decorated panels and ceilings with many tiles of blue and white faience from the Netherlands. In the barn the boys were amazed to see the skeleton of a sperm whale which was beached in 1996. Lunch at the tiny harbour at Havneby where the local fish restaurant serves up a big selection of locally caught fish which they smoke ... read more

Saturday 28th August 2010 Woke to blue sky and sunshine and quickly broke camp. After stocking up at the local markt we hit the road - destination Denmark - about a 4 hour drive. First stop Tonder to draw some cash as, like the UK, Denmark is not in the Euro zone preferring to keep its own currency - the Danish Kroner. Here we found Tonder Fest in full swing ! see pics. The local campsites were full for the weekend so we headed west to the coast road and found a site near to the west coast island of Romo at Ballund. Here free wifi and a new shower block with underfloor heating were attractive. ... read more

Culture day today as we visited a fine Danish castle. This is in the middle of the island so first we drove down the east coast and played ”who can spot the most gorgeous thatched timber-framed house”. Never seen so many beautiful buildings. Egeskov Slot is a moated castle dating back to the 1500s and is visually beautiful especially when it is reflected in the waters which surround it. Took lots of photos, from every angle and now have the problem of sorting out the best views. The castle is still inhabited but the rooms open to the public are filled with genuine furnishings and artefacts and our tour was really interesting. The hunting room has lots of mounted heads and up in the attic there is an exhibition of antique toys rather stunningly presented. Outside ... read more

Visited Ribe today, the oldest city in Denmark and established in 700 because of its good location as a trading post on the river. Lovely place especially on a blue-sky sunny day. There are streets of beautifully restored buildings in the medieval quarter of the city. They should be too pretty and twee but surprisingly they are not and the whole place was a delight to the eye and also to the camera. Loved the cathedral which has some very modern paintings and stained glass. The river is also pretty and forms an island round part of the town. Unexpectedly you come across a full working water wheel in the main shopping street and then a gushing weir. All extremely tasteful and well thought out. Not a piece of litter to be seen. We visited the ... read more

Woke to a grey day but sea lovely and calm so a good crossing. Out on deck to watch our arrival into Esbjerg it was really chilly with a most un-summery arctic wind. Getting through the port meant a quick wave on our way from the customs police and we were straight out on the road to Ribe which is just about 20 miles further south. This is a very flat area and very green except for a lining of blue lupins in the verges along the way and the white of the wind turbines. That enthusiastic turbine salesman who we first came across on the North Moroccan coast has been to Denmark as well ! Our campsite in Ribe is superb. The pool looks lovely - unfortunately too chilly to try it as thought hypothermia ... read more

We have a new motorhome for this trip, one with a garage so the scooter can go inside instead of hanging precariously off the back. This is an Italian McLouis TANDY 366G and it is very smart. Let’s hope it is also reliable. Gave the garden a wave as we left as it is about to burst into glorious summer flower which we will completely miss. Also to all the baby birds which have been feasting in our garden these last few weeks, including the robin which comes to the kitchen door for suet pellets, but have left a pot of bird food and asked next door to put some out for them every now and then. Don’t normally feed after June as that is when the noisy Charlie Boys (Starlings) move in en masse. Good ... read more

We are now in Denmark. We drove from Bremen, Germany to Ribe, Denmark - rain all the way until about an hour out of Ribe. Ribe is the oldest town in Denmark, founded in the 800's, on the western coast of Denmark. Population now is about 8000 and it is preserved as a historic site. They have several historic sites here and this year are celebrating their 1300th birthday. Cloudy, but no rain imminent so walked into the town to look around. Primary focal point is the cathedral which is the oldest in Denmark. Got into own around 5:30 and almost everything closed for the night. We've discovered that June is still the “off” season in this area with most things closed on the weekends so will try to see as much as we can tomorrow, ... read more

Crossed the Danish border today at 16:15 Clocking 280 Km. Have had exellent weather for the last 5 days apart from the fact that the wind was very strong the first three days , and mostly blowing in my face ,I,m not quite sure if the wind has really eased off that much or have i just become accostumed to it. Found a nice Camping site in Husum-Ballum thanks to the booklet from Wolfgang & Iduna Barelds in Stein Verlag which will help me a lot,I,m sure. Cycling up through Dithmarschen and Northfriesland made me aware of the toil and hardship that was involved culturing these stretches of land, the fight, often lost, against the power of the North Sea is to be seen in the many old Dykes ,some of which did not withstand. The most ... read more

46 days to take off. I've choosen to start my blog from the comfort off my couch, just to get familiar with the site. As said in my profile, I'm a 25 year old Danish girl, and it is my first solo trip. It's actually only the third time I'v been across the danish boarder, if you count out small trips to Germany and Sweden. So it's a really big deal for me. The trip has been planed for months now, and it is pretty much all I think about, besides my school and exams, the day I leave for Pisa, Italy, is all so the day I'm finished with my exams and is a care taker for old and disabled people, so it's gonna be a pretty big day for me. Some times I ... read more
