Tuesday 23 June: A nice sunny start to the day so Zachary and I were able to go out to the playground while Heather did the packing. We spent most of our time finding slugs that had were on the stones in the playground and relocating them to grass areas. Then it was time to head into town to catch our train to Middelfart where Heather’s guiding friend, Anne, and her husband Henrik were to pick us up. We had decided to go a bit earlier in large part because Heather needs to get to a doctor. She has had a boil or similar come up on her leg and it isn’t going away. Seeing a doctor while we are staying with someone seems like a good idea and we established it isn’t too horrendously expensive ... read more

Desperately trying to do a bit of catch up on this blog. I am sitting on the bed in our very nice room aboard the River Victoria in Moscow, but I've still got plenty to tell about our time in Denmark. We moved from cousin Ellen's place to cousin Kirsten. In between was the big family get together with many other family members, held in an old farmhouse on the island of Fyn. This was my big chance to catch up with other cousins and an aunt that I might not otherwise have seen. Thank you to cousin Signe and her family for hosting a wonderful day. One of the highlights of our time with Kirsten and Karin was the visit to the city of Aarhus to see Aros, the art gallery and Rainbow Panorama - ... read more

Odense on the island of Funen in Denmark - 16 July After we left Horsens, it was raining, and in some patches, quite heavily. We drove over the Little Belt's Bridge from Jutland to Funen, and then about 10 kilometers south of Odense. At one of the fantastic roadside stops, we stayed the night. These stops have restaurants, WiFi, bathroom facilities, fuel and plenty of other people who stop for the night. The next morning, we drove onto Odense. The great interest for us in Odense was the history of Hans Christian Anderson who was born in Odense and spent a lot of his childhood there. Odense is in central Funen and has a population of about 172,000. It is the commercial hub of Funen, and has a notable shopping district with a diversity of stores. ... read more

Braedstrup and Lake District - Ry and Himmelbjeret - and Legoland & then up the west coast to Hirtshals 28, 29 & 30 June Tea a lovely friend of our daughter Kerrie (both their little girls are in Year one together), has given us names and addresses of her friends who live in Denmark and who would love to meet us. Today was the day to meet one lot of her friends, Jette and Knud in Traeden in Braedstrup a beautiful country area in central Denmark on Jutland. We phoned them and so we headed their way. Our trusty GPS got is very easily to their house. We clicked straight away with them. They were so interesting to talk with and we learned so much about Denmark from them - culture, economy, community systems and social ... read more

Herning, Esbjerg, Fano Island and Ribe 27 & 28 June After our tyres were fitted we drove to Herning region to Birk where we had read that there was an extensive area for Denmark's display of art, architecture and landscape. it was an area where the country's textile industry started. In the 60s there was a large shirt factory built, giving employment to the region. This design theme quickly extended to environmental design, art and architecture. The long list of things we saw was: · Angli, a round, white building which used to be the shirt factory and is now a design school and office facilities · Carl-Henning Pedersen & Else Alfelt's Museum - a round building and the pyramid which both were covered by mosaics · Allotment which consists of 116 figures of concrete in ... read more

We left Lubeck this morning and embarked on a long bus ride into Denmark. It was fine by me, though, as our destination for the day was... Legoland! The original Legoland in Denmark! Woo! We arrived there shortly after noon and proceeded to swelter away waiting in lineups and such for the next three hours. It was fabulous. Only rode two rides (a roller coaster - polar expedition, and a Viking themed water ride), but got to wander around a little and take in the Lego miniatures of various things and shop in the world's largest Lego store and such. Could easily have spent way more time there. First impressions of Copenhagen are great - clean, classic... There's something understatedly Scandinavian about it that I can't quite put my finger on - elegance without ostentation, I ... read more

We didn't want to leave Denmark without visiting another of its cities, so we traveled due West from Copenhagen by train to the city of Odense on Denmark's 3rd largest island - Funen (Fyn). We had to catch a train bound for Esbjerg (pronounced Esbia) because the usual trains heading for Odense were canceled due to a stop work meeting - so had to dash from one platform to another, fortunately escalators were in working order! We are getting quite good at dashing up and down stairs and platforms. Glad we didn't book tickets because they would have been no use whatsoever. Arrived in Odense one and half hours later. The weather was absolutely perfect the whole time, about 21 degrees - a heatwave according to the Danes! In Odense we experienced a more relaxed atmosphere, ... read more
