Well we have just had our tour’s farewell dinner at Restaurant Alberto K at the Royal, in Copenhagen. The following attempts to describe the menu, which in all honesty our language does not have enough words to describe…. Appetisers Oysters with crème fraiche Prawns sashimi with mayonnaise Smoked quail eggs served with a puff of smoke and edible shell fragments and a large degree of theatre! Chicken soup with caviar and spinach, served in an egg shell bowl Wine: Champagne (mais bien sûr!) Breads Individual white muffin-shaped loaves with caraway seeds Individual malted rye high tops Served with cultured butter (regular or whipped) Entrées Mussels, served on a bed of tomato flesh with a nasturtium and dill salad. Clear tomato jelly with a mussel soup. Wine: 2010 Gruner veltiner, Wachau, Austria ... read more

Another hot day in Copenhagen - close to thirty degrees. I forget how pleasant travelling in cooler climates is - no sweaty clothes! City tours offer some advantages - they tick the box on the big sights, and they help you get a feel for the layout of the city. For instance I had no idea that Copenhagen had so much water - there are canals and islands everywhere. On the list of sights seen: Amalienborg palace (the royal palace complex where they live today) Little mermaid Rosenberg Palace and crown jewels Black Diamond - national library Operaen - opera house Nyhavn - new harbour and the canals There is so much more to Copenhagen but nowhere near enough time.... read more

Early morning transfer from our central Reykjavik hotel to Keflavik airport, and then a 3.5 hour flight to Copenhagen. We arrived just after lunch; it was HOT. Close to 30 degrees. Our transfer took a detour to pass the local beaches; you have never seen so many people on a beach! Once we got to our Hotel Scandic, close to central station, it was out for a walk. Today is Sunday and the city does look like it had a very big night the night before. Very dirty which is a little bit disappointing. Trying to get our bearings, we walked across town following the pedistrian streets known as Stroget (which translates as the strolling street). It looks much more European than the previous places we have been, but the rubbish is unpleasant. Crossing the street ... read more

Copenhagen may not be as dolled up as some of its Scandinavian contemporaries but it takes up the slack with more than its fair share of spunk. There's still plenty to admire in her looks and Danny Kay wasn't whistling Dixie when he declared Copenhagen wonderful wonderful. Without knowing the lyrics to that song, I'll bet they were referring to the architecture, social scene and location location location. Copenhagen sprawls over a myriad of islands interspersed by dozens of narrow canals conjuring up images of Amsterdam. The bike culture augments that Amsterdam feel. There are equally as many people weaving the streets via pedal power as there are in cars. OK, perhaps not quite as many but you get the point. This city is tailor made for 2 wheels, being as flat as the form of ... read more

Check-out procedures We left Paris on Friday morning. We stayed up late again so Mark and I scrambled to pack up and tidy up the apartment. The instructions for the apartment were lengthy and, not surprisingly, a smidge confusing. Mark called the manager of the apartment to be sure we followed the instructions correcly, and we had to leave the key in the mailbox which luckily we were able to do without any wild duck chases during our exit. The only problem we had is we left a little late and upon arriving at the airport, we had long lines and limited time til departure. We did self checkin which was easy enough, and even got the luggage tags and boarding passes from the kiosk. But then we had to lime up to turn in ... read more

Stopped off in Copenhagen on my way back to Scotland. Very expensive - 6 euros for a pint - but a beautiful city and very friendly people. The people all seem very happy here and everyone seems to behave themselves! The highlights of this visit were the Danish resistance museum, the harbour (Nordhaven) and the local beer (even if it was expensive). Oh and yes I did see the pesky mermaid!... read more

The last few weeks have been a whirlwind in terms of traveling. I've been trying to see certain places in time to go to Sardinia and Rome, where I'm trying to coordinate visiting friends amid their vacation season. This blog might not be as personal as some of the others. The Baltics, Russia, and Scandinavia run off of cafes and restaurants and just walking around. Though I did meet some great people, I didn’t have the close interactions I had with people like I did in Asia. I suppose it’s because a lot of the people just live there normal lives and let the tourists do their thing. Lithuania: Vilnius – After spending a day in Warsaw I headed to Vilnius in Lithuania. The train ride took about 8 hours total. I had to switch trains ... read more

Day 26 – Thursday 12th to Day 34 - Friday 20thJuly 2012. (Happy Birthday Fi) It felt like a Contiki Tour……. But that’s OK. 4 Countries (Belgium, Netherlands, Germany and Denmark), 12 Cities, 7 Days. This is what happens in these small European countries. The plan was always to head through this part of the world quicker than we would otherwise like. The two main reasons are 1. Time and 2. Budget. We only have 4 months to get back to Kuala Lumpur and Europe is expensive, even more so when you travel with 3 kids and are using Australian Dollars to buy Euro’s. We left Dinant in Belgium on Thursday 12th July and went to Gent, not much to rave about, and then to the more popular Belgium city of Brugge. Well, was it popular? ... read more
