Monday 31st December Today is our last day in Copenhagen, so we left our suitcase (we shared one as it costs per bag on EasyJet) at left luggage in the station and went to Tivoli Gardens. Only it was shut. There were no signs telling us so, but shut it was. So we walked through the drizzle to the Hans Christian Andersen Museum and that was shut. Apart from shops, everything was shut. It was rather disappointing as we wandered around in the rain looking for ways to be entertained. At 2pm we met Naja. We'd met her through my friend Jayne on Facebook and now met her in real life. As everything was shut (did I mention this before about everything being closed?) she drove us back to her apartment. Naja's apartment was very homely ... read more

Saturday 29 December Today started well with a Danish guy totally embarrassing himself in front of us, poor bloke. The weather was foggy with misty rain and we were walking towards the Christianshavn Metro station where we were to be met for a walking tour of Copenhagen as booked on Expedia. We spotted the spire of Vor Frelsers Kirke which is extraordinary in that the spiral stairs go around OUTSIDE the spire. As we took photos, a friendly guy said to us "I will run up there and blow away the fog for you!" and then he promptly tripped over a bicycle rack, flipping right over, legs in the air. We asked if he was OK but he was up and sprinting away, his embarrassment making him go faster. When we got to the Metro station, ... read more

Sunday 30 December Today was a bit drizzly so we were glad to get on a warm bus at 10.15am for a castles tour. There were only 7 other passengers and Glyn and I got front seat on the upper deck - get in!!! We were given headphones as there was intermittent commentary along the road. We passed through Copenhagen and started seeing countryside. Some of the houses were huge and beautiful, it turns out that they were in fact villas (the Danish use the Italian word villa) and ranged from being worth 1 million to 8 million dollars. We were told the value in Kroner but I've forgotten that. We passed by footballer's mansions, valued anywhere up to $20 million. We saw the sea a lot en route and witnessed people swimming in it. There's ... read more

Friday 28 December Apart from shops, not a lot opens until 10-11am, so we didn't get up too early today. It was very cold, but the sky was blue. We'd pre-booked a bus tour (Grand Tour of Copenhagen) and got on it opposite Tivoli Gardens. The tour guide was an extravagant large lady in a big red coat and she sung a line of 'Wonderful wonderful Copenhagen' to us. The bus took us around Tivoli, past a multi coloured cinema with ace shocking pink walls. We went past Hans Christian Andersen's statue and saw Rodin's Thinker sitting in a tiny park. We went through Christianshavn and through Kongens Nytorv. We arrived at Amalienborg Slot, the Royal residence before 11.30am, in time for the changing of the guard. Btw, 'Slot' mean palace or castle, which is cool ... read more

Thursday 27 December 2012 OMG, during the flight to Copenhagen I saw the longest bridge I have ever seen, I thought my eyes were deceiving me! It was the Great Belt Bridge, in fact two bridges (1,624 metres long and 6,611 metres long) separated by the very small Sprogo Island. Upon looking it up on Googlemaps, I discovered that there's an even longer one from Copenhagen to Sweden, just under 5 miles long, the Oresund Bridge. Wow. My hubby and I landed at Copenhagen airport around 4.30pm. The first thing I noticed is that there's a lot of info in English and so far it seems many people can speak English. Although this makes life a lot easier, it's also a little disappointing. We took a train to Kobenhavn, the central station of Copenhagen. The second ... read more

Because of my mother's Danish background, I've had the chance to travel to Denmark roughly five times since I was born. Her entire family lives there, including my grandma, or mormor as they call it in danish. Over our years visiting, my sister and I have made friends there, and getting the chance to see them is exciting, too. My mormor lives in the heart of Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. It's home to the Copenhagen harbour, which hosts the famous Little Mermaid statue, story created by the dane Hans Christian Andersen. People of Denmark are known for using bicycles as a way of transportation, rather than cars. The country is so small and city based that vehicles aren't really necessary. Because bikes are so popular, every road has a bike path. Back in 2007 when ... read more

Off Again Since returning from my road trip to France both Gemma and I had itchy feet and wanted to get away again, even if only for a few days. 2 days after getting back from France we had found a really good deal on flights and hotel in central Copenhagen. At £130 each we booked without further deliberation. We wanted somewhere where for a weekend we could just relax, away from our home and jobs. Instead of immersing ourselves in a historical and educational experience we wanted to lose ourselves in the sights, sounds and smells of somewhere new. Copenhagen has all of these in great abundance! Stansted We both finished work had a quick bite to eat and set out on the two hour journey to Stansted from Leicester (it's funny that the drive ... read more

Day 4 Monday 22 October 2012 Another early start to catch the train from Stockholm to Copenhagen. Rewarded with a dry walk to the train station, a great way to say farewell to beautiful Stockholm! The train journey from Stockholm to Copenhagen was pleasant enough – a lot of forests and small towns however not as comfortable as other train journeys – the trip was uneventful until Lund....then an announcement stated there was a malfunction with the train so we were to transfer to another train in Malmo...low and behold 10 mins later we arrived in Malmo and a replacement train was already waiting for us...now that is efficiency to be truly admired! As soon as I arrived in Copenhagen so did the rain! Today I decided to embrace this rather than ... read more

We find ourselves quite pleased to be in a city again! From a rather remote location in the northern part of the Shetland Islands, three flights and two transfers later and there you are; the bustling city of Copenhagen. This is one of those cities that has a distinct pulse and is alive with activity. We look around and all of sudden we notice that everything is quite flat. This bodes well for the plethora of bicyclists who motor around on their faithful steeds, secure as they actually have their own lane to travel here in the heart of the city. As Americans, we have to keep a watchful eye on those bike paths as the pedal pushers will mow you down and move on. As well the bikers need to take care. Our first hour ... read more

Well Heya everybody! I’ve been in Denmark now for a week and a half, so I figured it’s quite about time I wrote a blog. So here we go. I arrived in the Copenhagen airport two Sundays ago, exhausted after fully 25 hours in travel. After retrieving my baggage, I followed a group of other DIS students outside to meet several DIS faculty members who guided me to the nearby Hilton hotel. The hotel was where any students who would be staying with Danish roommates or host families would wait until their host(s) would pick them up. I dropped off my bags in a side room and went into the main conference room, nervous and excited to meet my family…or not. They hadn’t arrived yet. My nerves would have to last a few more minutes. I ... read more
