This morning we caught the train to Østerport Station so that we could see the statue of The Little Mermaid. Based on the character from the story by Hans Christian Andersen the statue is considered to be symbolic of Copenhagen. I'm sure the area where The Little Mermaid is located must be lovely in the spring and summer, but in winter it is was rather grey and desolate. The other major detraction is the factory (power station?) across the water belching plumes of smoke into the air. As we left The Little Mermaid the weather turned from bad to worse. Already cold and grey and windy it started to rain! Having bought a puffer jacket without a hood I dragged my waterproof shell, with its hood, out of my bag and struggled into it. We were ... read more

This morning we had an early start to travel to Berlin's Tegal Airport for our flight to Copenhagen. Having got the hang of the trains over the last few days we felt OK about taking the train out to the airport rather than ordering a taxi. Angelika had made us 'breakfasts to go' so we collected those from the fridge and ate them in our room before heading out to the train station just around the corner from Pension Galerie. Even though it is a smaller station there was a lift so we didn't have to haul our luggage down the stairs. Bonus! The train doesn't run all the way to the airport so Melbourne is not the only city in the world without a rail link to the airport! We disembarked at Kurt Schumaker Station ... read more

Greenland has strong historical ties with the Kingdom of Denmark, originally becoming a Danish colony in 1814, and later a part of the Danish Realm in 1953. It was only in 1978 the world's largest island was granted home rule by Denmark, acknowledging the wishes of the people. The ties that bind are strong and the Danish influence, including the language and the currency are still the norm throughout Greenland. The flag of Greenland has the Danish colours of red and white, however I'm quite sure there's no chance of a polar bear making an appearance on the Danish coat of arms. The world's largest land based predator is not known for strolling around the streets of Copenhagen, as far as I am aware. Flights are also closely coordinated between the two countries, hence the reason ... read more

Nicola has landed!! She flew in from Paris and was met by Katherine while I looked after the girls as Thomas had work to do. On Nic's first evening in Copenhagen myself and my two lovely daughters went out for a bite to eat and some chit-chat. The next day was Nic's actual birthday so we started the day as we ended it...eating! It began with morning tea at Perch's Tea Rooms, a business which started in 1835. It is the oldest tea shop in Europe offering 130 different varieties of tea. Thomas then took us all to Frederiksborg Castle in the afternoon. A palace built as a Royal residence for King Christian IV, it is now a museum of national history situated at Hillerød which is 37 kms from Copenhagen. The weather remained beautiful for ... read more

There’s only one thing slightly more invigorating than travelling itself. And that’s influencing others to travel, and then see them enjoy it just as much as you do. When my friend Chloe and I decided to go on quick weekend break to Copenhagen, I must admit I was a bit dubious. I’m all about exploring new places and roughing it a bit. Chloe is more a 4-5 star kind of girl, staying on the beaten track. I wish I could have captured the look on her face when I said that I’d booked us into a youth hostel. But I’ve learnt to not judge books by their covers, and as it turns out Chloe was a bit of a dark horse. Our weekend began in the wee hours of the morning, as the best adventures always ... read more

Began this morning a little later than usual - with breakfast at 8 and our concert at 10, it was worth sleeping in as late as possible, especially given that our room at the hostel overlooks the (rather noisy) street - people gather out there to smoke, chat, and just generally be noisy when staggering back from bars at 3 in the morning and such. We sang a concert at Vor Frue Kirke (which I believe is Danish for the church of Our Lady... Which seems odd for a Lutheran church, which apparently this was, but I'm guessing it probably has a longer history and that the name is a remnant of that) at noon. The acoustic was incredible. The sound lingered audibly for a stunning amount of time before dissipating, and I sincerely hope that ... read more

Having visited Copenhagen for the first time just two years ago I could remember a great deal about the city and my way round. It is a stunning city which fulfils all my desires of living by water even if I struggle to deal with their daft money which has a hole in the middle so coins look like giant polo mints. Getting to Copenhagen was much more glamorous than getting a flight. I took a train at Malmo central station and 15 minutes later, having crossed this amazing bridge, we arrive in Denmark. The train arrives at the central station in Copenhagen about 10 minutes later…now that is what I call a cool border crossing. Finding my hotel for the night took some negotiating seeing as half the area around the central station is dug ... read more

Day 63 – Copenhagen - Denmark A travel day today. We drove out of Berlin, had lunch in a car park and boarded our ferry to Denmark. We are staying in cute little cabins at a camping ground and enjoying some al fresco dining. Reminds me of school camp. After an awesome dinner by our TopDeck chef we had a quick drive around Copenhagen so that we had our bearings for an explore day tomorrow. We got off the bus once to go check out the Little Mermaid statue. Day 64 – Copenhagen Today was all about Copenhagen. We got dropped off in town at 10:00am and weren’t getting picked up again until 8:30pm. We had a bit of a shop to start with to get our ... read more

Docked Copenhagen 8.,00a.m. Everywhere within the city was walking distance but we decided to do a loop on the Hop on Hop Off bus, then walked back to the city to see things a bit more leisurely. Copenhagen was 22 degrees today so perfect for a walk in this very cycle, walking friendly city - lots and lots of bikes (but not as many as Amsterdam). This would have to be one of the cleanest cities we have visited and the walk from the docks into the Stroget (main shopping and pedestrian malls) was just magic - so many gorgeous buildings along the waterfront. Caught the changing of the guard at midday at Fredrik and Mary's home. We then decided to take a water taxi for a bit of a tour around the canals - it ... read more

Forget about trying to pronounce anything in Danish 'cos it will invariably sound nothing like what it is meant to. But that's ok, because the locals all understand and speak English and can usually work out what you are looking for. We arrived here on a Saturday morning and were delighted to learn that the Copenhagen Jazz Festival was in "full swing". Bigger names, like Branford Marsalis, were playing in the larger indoor venues, but the general public could listen to trad, modern, dixie, cool jazz bands at various squares during the day and evening. Mainly folks our age and older eating and drinking or just standing around listening - good atmosphere and entertainment. Running parallel to the Jazz festival, on the weekend, was the Roskilde music festival for the younger set - we saw some ... read more
