Greetings from Prague. Actually Berlin, but we're backdating this entry. A few caveats. 1. Prague is the most expensive place we have visited so far. We had to pay $15 to have our laundry done. Beer was cheaper than water, which meant that drunk britons spent the early morning hours screaming outside our bedroom window. 2. Our hostel was disgusting. Group showers are gross and group showers that don't drain are even worse. 3. We visited Prague in the height of the summer tourist season, which happed to fall during a European heat wave. Keep these elements in mind when reading our thoughts of this city. We were really looking forward to Prague. Since that early '90s Levis commercial ("In Prague, you can trade them for a car") this city has embodied in our minds the ... read more

We have reached the halfway point of the trip. I am still having fun but starting to miss things (and people) from home. This morning was our first day of our Czech Culture and History class. We had met with the professor at the very beginning of the trip and she said that she was going to try to make it fun, but we had our doubts. Anyway, class looks like it is going to be a pretty good time. Not too much work, but I think we are going to learn a lot. We were only in class until about noon, so we went into Old Town for lunch. Everyone else had Gyros, but I had my absolute favorite thing: corn on a stick. After that, we went back to the dorms. I got busy ... read more

(the pics are mostly more from vienna, now that everyone's are on facebook-- the last one is from tonight) today we started our second class--our two profs are marketa and malvina. they are super nice, and we're looking forward to traveling with them tomorrow. they've told us they're pretty flexible about what we'll be doing-- we'll be required to write a few 300 word papers, but that's pretty much it lol. they say if we have any suggestions of what we'd prefer to do (based on what the schedule says). so today we first we listened to marketa talk about what exactly central europe means, and then malvina discussed the year 1989 and what kind of revolutions it brought about in various countries. i enjoyed listening to marketa better because she didn't have a powerpoint presentation ... read more

Zdenka had a wonderful tourism book for Prague, making it possible for us to make our own walking tour. Our day started off with a wonderful breakfast that Zdenka had prepared for us so that we could try an assortment of Czech food. We then visited the University that she works at because she works in Food Chemistry and Angele was excited to be touring a lab. It was acctually really cool, but being so science inept, I dont know what half the stuff does! I just made sure not to touch anything as it was all labelled biohazardous :) We started our tour of the city in the Prague Castle. It is a huge complex consisting of a cathedral, palace, smaller chapels, towers of all sorts and the best part was a place called the ... read more

We got the best welcome in Prague. Our Aunt has a friend in the city that so kindly let us stay with her. She even picked us up from the the train station, gave us our own room, let us eat her food! It was amazing! It was so nice to be away from hostels and feel like you are in a real home for a few days. Thank you so much again Zdenka, and again if you ever want to come to Vancouver with your family, you are more than welcome to stay with us! We spent this first day wandering the streets and orienting ourselves in the city. There is a lot of entertaining modern art in the city. One consisted of toilets and sinks on long rods of metal, sort of resembling a ... read more

not only from a great billy joel song, but also featured as a slogan on their tourism booklet. how cool is that? so yes- my group and i went to vienna this weekend. it was hot, we were sweaty and water cost us a small fortune. but of course more importantly, we had a wonderful time! we left friday morning- we took a train that left at 10:00 and was about 4.5 hours. we had a lot of fun on the train-- since there were 6 of us, we filled up one of the compartments and so we felt nice and comfortable. the train ride was nice and scenic-- there were huge fields of sunflowers everywhere! i had no idea they grew so many here- i really wanted to be able to take some home with ... read more

When you turn on a TV travel show, or open a travel book on Europe, Prague is always one of those cities that is singled out as one of the most beautiful and must see cities in Europe. Well it is and it isn't. I (Simon) have been to Prague before, about 17 years ago when it was still a full on Communist country and definately not your average tourist destination. I was fortunate to know some Czech's from Australia who were going to be visiting their families at the same time as I was going to be in Europe, so they invited me to meet up with them and spend a week living with their family in Prague. It was a real highlight of that trip and I loved the place. It had a real ... read more

Prague is awesome! What a small place full of history. Honestly, its a nice place but you can easily do everything in a few days since its so small. No one spoke English which made it hard to interact with the place, but it was still amazing!... read more

Today was the last day of our Brand Czech/Brand USA class. So that's 3 credit hours under my belt for this trip :) This morning we had a meeting with the MU study abroad coordinator, our US Brand professor, and the professors for our next class. It was boring and a little pointless, but that's OK. After that, we visited a pretty cool ad agency. We came in at like 11:00 a.m. and they served us beer (I don't do pivo before lunch) and talked about their clients (beer) and some other stuff. Overall, it was pretty cool. We went to lunch with the US students (the Czech students are done) and our professor bought, so that was very nice. Then we went to our professor's son's ad agency for a little bit. He talked about ... read more

well... i figured i would go ahead and write a little something since i won't be able to update again until sunday. today we met up at 9:00, and met our teachers for the next class which we will start on monday. this should be an exciting class! it's czech culture and history, and our teachers are two phd candidates. they're fun and young, and want our class to be a good time. for example, tuesday we'll be taking an overnight trip to the town of olomouc (which is where one of them went to college)! that should be fun. more on that class later... after a quick meeting with them, sandy told us we had an hour before leaving for this ad agency, and so after much deliberation my friends and i decided we could ... read more
