We had breakfast in the cafeteria aboard ship at 6 am. Surprisingly it was eggs, meat, cheese, toast, cereal, juices and coffee! Promptly at 6:30, our young porter arrived and carried our bags up two flights of stairs. He put them by the exit and told us not to worry about them; they were too heavy for any one to steal! I agree! We got off the ferry and went through customs. They stamped the passports, which did not happen in Italy. As instructed by Ivana, we got a cab for 10 euro which dropped us off at the Buza gate. Ivana was waiting for us to take us to our “sobe”, a room with cooking facilities in a private home. Ivana Raic, age 30, and her sister, Anita, age 38, run a beautiful facility here ... read more

Our ferry arrived very early in Dubrovnik, seven o'clock in the AM. Having slept on the ground we didn't have the most amazing sleep ever, but it was better than the last ferry where we'd decided to sleep outside until we got too cold at 2am. We got off the ferry as most people do; quick as we could. As we walked to the terminal there were many people on the other side of the port fence trying to sell rooms, something we've learned is not uncommon, and not shady a long as you have an idea as to prices. We booked ahead having had so much trouble on the Côte d'Azur, and started the walk to the hostel which was actually in an area called Lapad. Having taken photos with directions we were on the ... read more

K – We were excited to get to Dubrovnik, which is probably the best-known destination in the Balkans. We were staying in a private room in Lapad (or "new" Dubrovnik) but were only a 10-minute bus ride to the Old City (henceforth referred to as Dubrovnik). Knowing that Dubrovnik is the major destination for coach tours and cruise ships we got up early to beat the crowds. Our guidebook told us that the battlements opened at 9am so we decided to get to the town for 8am to stroll around and then be first in line. However when we got there we found that the battlements opened at 8am and we were therefore the first and only people up there! I can’t describe how great it was to walk around the 2KM of famous walls with ... read more

The only piece of drama (and there is always one to report!!) that happened during our 'sea day' was in the evening. After returning to our cabin at around 5pm, an envelope was waiting for us on our bed. It is traditional that on the evening of the last gala dinner, club members get invited to the Captain's cocktail. There was 1 envelope. There was 1 invite inside. It was addressed to Roisin Ann Hodgson!! ‘Its only a cocktail party!' I kept repeating to my self. This didn't stop Roisin waving the invitation in front of my nose throughout dinner. Approaching the L'Amestista lounge I could see a red rope strewn across the doorway flanked by 2 of the biggest ‘meat heads' MSC must have on their books. Roisin handed her invite to one of these ... read more

Even though we had a long drive yesterday, we got back into the car today with our friends Richmond (Australian) and Cristina (Swiss) for the 3.5 hour drive south to Dubrovnik. It was mostly the same drive as the day before except for the last part, where the road turns off back to the coast and you have to cross the border into Bosnia & Herzegovina for 20 kilometres and then cross the border back into Croatia (Bosnia & Herzegovina must have wanted to keep some of the coastline). It was a beautiful sunny and warm day. We left early, but by the time we reached Dubrovnik it was just after lunch, so we were starved. As we approached the old city of Dubrovnik, we were stricken by its beauty. The walls surrounding the city were ... read more

Ahhhh Dubrovnik ! On avait 2 poissons blancs (aucune idée lesquels... mais ils étaient bons), ... read more

Day 1 The early morning start was worth it to see the ferry pulling in to Croatia just after sunrise. Dubrovnik is beautiful!! We hadn't even done anything yet but we loved it!! A quick coffee and breakfast and we walked to our hotel which has a lovely view of the sea! The people in Dubrovnik are so friendly and helpful! We strolled down the very rocky Lapad beach (rocky beach but incredibly blue, clear waters) and down a little promenade, then made our way to the old city! Wow! I mean it.... Wow!! Such a gorgeous place! All old cream coloured buildings with terracotta roofs! The first thing we did was climb and walk the city walls. What a spectacular place! I can't describe it so you will have to look at the pictures! We ... read more

The Dalmatian coast of Croatia is fast gaining a reputation as the new playground for the rich and famous. But the thing is you have to get there first! In my case the journey entailed catching a midnight bus from Zagreb in freezing temperatures, only to pull an all nighter on the aforementioned bus before a weary group of passengers arrived in Dubrovnik the next morning. The odd midnight bus ride is an unavoidable part of life on the road, and just goes to show this travel caper is not all supermodels and speedboats! Let's rewind just a fraction, dear reader, to bring you up to speed on the journal. The Balkans adventure left off in Ljubljana, from where I caught a morning train to the Croatian capital of Zagreb. It was a scenic and enjoyable ... read more
