Getting to Croatia consisted of a 10 hour train ride with no air conditioning and a very packed and grumpy train ride. The best decision was to break up the travel by spending a night in Zagrab the captial of Croatia where we enjoyed a night evening stroll and dinner out. The hostel we stayed at was a good choice as we meet many people doing the same sail Croatia trip as we were. It had been in the plan to do Sail Croatia, an interest we shared with our friend Jo and old flatmate so prior to leaving NZ we had already prebooked and paid for the trip. We arrived in Spilt from Zargrab the next day where Scott and i had 5 days of relaxation before the boat departed from Spilt. Spilt was a ... read more

Day 3 started with breakfast near Pile Gate. We met with Marija Vukas and caught up on the last Few years. From there, it was sea kayaking. Abbey and I partnered up, Ayden and Conner were a duo and the last (and quite inexperienced) group was Brock and Maty. We went along the walls of the entire Old Town and then out to Lokrum. Our kayak and Conner's touched Lokrum so we could say we had been there. Kayak #3 was afraid they were going to overturn along the rock endes of the island. After the kayaking, we hit Banje again. It was really sunny. After some swimming, Abbey and Maty went parasailing. The look on Maty's face, you bacon see how much she was looking forward to it. Off to eat our last supper in ... read more

Great day in Dubrovnik! Had breakfast at the Dubravka and the headed to Banje. Perfect weather for the beach. Had lunch at the East West Club. After spending the day at Banje, we got cleaned up and went to Mea Culpa for supper. Had a great pizza supper there. That was followed by a trip up to the top of Srd. We didn't make it there last night. Carrie and dad stayed behind to wait for our return. All for now.... read more

It was a long day, but we finally made it! I have a hard time believing that we are back here again. The only sleep that I got was on the Frankfurt to Dubrovnik flight. Maty slept more than she would have at home I think. Everyone is doing well. We got to Dubrovnik and went into the old town to shop a bit. We also went to a small rock beach north of Lovrijenac. Good enough to take a quick swim and go back to our apartments. Off to eat in the old town. Hoping to try something new, or newer! Dad is doing well. He started to cramp up a bit. He believes Coke is like Gatorade I think. We are then off to Mt. Srd. Allegedly it is really petty when the lights ... read more

Dubrovnik Croatia 5 to 8 July 2013 We drove up from Kotor and passed through the border of Coatia with no problems – although it took ½ hr to be ‘checked-out’ of Montenegro. The police on the Croatia side hardly looked at our passports, and of course, no stamping of passports was done. We later learned that 4 days before we crossed the border, Montenegro had officially entered the EU so the Montenegro customs/police officials were not sure of the new rules, hence the hold up of getting out of the country. We arrived in Dubrovnik at about 4.30pm and found Camping Solitudo which was 10 minutes from Old Town called Grand. It was a big park with beautiful facilities. Once settled in we caught a bus into Grand to soak up the atmosphere. And wow, ... read more

Spent Friday night in Gatwick... tried to sleep, was very much unsuccessful in my endeavour. First it took me forever to find two seats together. Once I finally got all comfortable rearranging my bags and getting a make-shift bed going, have my ear plugs in, eye mask on, am totally comfortable... and this lady comes over, starts poking my shoulder and asks to sit. Now, airport sleeping etiquette: you do not ask someone who is clearly either asleep or almost asleep to move their bags. There are other seats. It’s a damn airport. Also, you, under no circumstances, POKE SOMEONE WHO MAY BE ASLEEP. Seriously. I told her I was trying to sleep, to which she snarkily replied: “I think that’s what most people are trying to do.” Whatever. You want to break the code, you ... read more

Day 49 – Dubrovnik - Croatia After our very quick trip to Vienna we moved onto Dubrovnik, Croatia. It was a short 1 hour flight and the views flying in helped us get into a beachy frame of mind. The islands were gorgeous and the water crystal blue. We’re staying in Old Town Dubrovnik which is really cool. It’s surrounded by a massive wall and no cars are allowed inside. We had to drag our suitcases through the cobbled streets and alleyways to get to our accommodation. We were lucky we didn’t get lost with all the laneways leading in different directions. We had a cocktail, late lunch and gelato while exploring the town. From our room we only have to walk a few steps to get to the water. There’s no beach there ... read more

Croatia! After our overnight ferry journey we saw the beautiful coastline of Croatia appear before us as the sun rose. Having arrived in Dubrovnik we made our way South on the scenic coast road toward Milini. This area is the self proclaimed 'Dubrovnik riviera' and is a series of small, quiet coves with blue water and pebbled beaches. We took a few dips in the sea and enjoyed the calm, refreshing water. During our stay we took a ferry to Dubrovnik from Milini and wandered through the white marbled old town. Unfortunately Dubrovnik's beauty attracts huge cruise ships - three had disembarked on the day we visited. We also visited a Balkans war photography museum. Dubrovnik was heavily bombed during the war; we saw shelled and derelict hotels on a nearby beach to where we were ... read more

Thur 27th June 2013 Day 25 Croatian port city of Dubrovnik What can I say about Dubrovnik? I went to the 'Grad' which is the old city to find a almost completely restored old walled-city beside the Adriatic sea. First impression was that when I was looking at the old buildings and streets of Dubrovnik, I was taken back to medieval time, only the people are modern day people, mainly tourist, like me. Second impression was that it was heavily commercialised to cash in on the tourists money. After taking lots of photographs and exhausting myself from walking around the beautiful old city, I sat down at a cafe to eat a salad and drink some coffee and do what the other diners do - watch the world go by. As I was walking around the ... read more
