Day 5 The next morning we were up and out and homeward bound. Well, not completely homeward, our final destination was Dubrovnik. To get there we had to return the hire car to Herceg Novi, get the cross border bus, negotiate our way from the bus station into Dubrovnik and then find our lodgings. Easy. And so it was. The car we dropped off in a car park right next to the car hire place; we then walked up the hill into Herceg Novi and had a spot of lunch in the Trg Nikole Durkovica square and finally headed to a café on Njegoseva, which has wonderful views of the water, and rested there for a while before heading up a further hill to the bus station. We bought our tickets ... read more

We have heard a lot about Dubrovnik and how beautiful it is and everyone was right - it was just gorgeous. It is an historic and beautifully picturesque town known mainly as a major tourist resort facing the sea at the base of the rugged limestone mountains. Its medieval double walls and fortifications make you feel as though you have stepped back in time. For the history buffs - it was founded in the 7th century by the Romans, and under the protection of the Byzantine Empire, of Venice, of Hungary until 1526, and of the Ottoman Empire until 1806, but it governed itself as an independent republic. In the 16th century, Dubrovnik had one of the greatest merchant fleets in the Mediterranean. Napoleon abolished the city-republic, and in 1815 the Congress of Vienna gave the ... read more

There is not really to much to say about life at the Villa. It’s pretty much 10 days of “same old, same old” but it’s a tough life that someone has to do once in a while. So where is the villa ? Well, Omis is only about 25 – 30 km South of Split but it is about a 45 minute drive. Continue through Omis for about another 8 to 10 km and the highway passes through the village of Stanici and our landmark here for finding the villa is the Sunset Apartments. (Try a Google Maps query of Stanici, if you zoom in to about a 200 m scale you’ll see the Sunset Apts noted on the map) About 100 meters along, continuing sort of South-east and the steps to the villa from the ... read more

Kaum aus Klek raus, kam auch schon die Bosnische Grenze. Na bin ich einfach durchgerauscht. War noch voller elastischer Energie weils vorher ja so gut ging. Naja, dann endlichendlcih in Dubrovnik angekommen. Erst mal vorbeigerauscht. Besten Dank liebe Kartenhersteller fuer die Abzweigungen die alle nur vor Hotelsfuehren und so steil sind, dass man am besten n Skilift hinstellen wuerden. Dubrovnik I had booked my accomodation through a new travellers website and was surprised yhe owner offered to pick me up from the Dubrovnik port. Especially as I had only paid 15€ for a single private bedroom with shared bathroom and kitchen. We arrived to the spacious 3 bedroom house which is situated on the very top of the hill surrounding Dubrovnik and we sat down on the outside balcony which looked out over the entire harbour and surrounding islands. The owner wad delightful and very helpful with maps and a list of places to see and I was happy to put my bag down and deal with my bed bug issues after I had had a long relaxed skype with Mum and Dad. I also messaged Mikaela and Aaron who were due to get into ... read more

After arriving in Dubrovnik we made our way to an apartment which had a beautiful view over the Old Town of Dubrovnik. We decided to stay out of the old town area in Dubrovnik as the prices of dorm rooms in the old town area were almost double the price of apartments which were only 10minutes away. It turned out to be a great decision, our room was really nice with a balcony and we turned out to be only two streets away from Amanda who we have been trying to catch all year. After an excited phone call to Amanda we met up and made our way to the Old Town via the laundry mat where Amanda needed to wash ALL of her clothes to get rid of the bed bugs she got while on ... read more

It just occurred to me that for the first half of this trip, we chose places with some pretty heavy recent histories: Russia, Estonia, and Croatia. I can easily remember when massive changes happened that have dramatically shaped each country in the last twenty years or so. In Russia and Estonia, it was pretty amazing to see and experience those changes through discussion with locals, checking out the various architectural styles, etc. Despite the fact that Dubrovnik was shelled hard during the Croat-Serb civil war, this is not where one goes for an exposure to recent Croatian history. For a view into a much older time period though, say 14th century, this is the place. To me growing up, any mention of Dubrovnik conjured up images of the infamous limestone protective wall that rises up from ... read more

After another gut churning ride between Montenegro and Croatia, it was to Dubrovnik to begin what I am considering the home stretch of the holiday. Which is sad, but it turns out the Croation coast has quite the ability to cheer one up! But first, Dubrovnik. One of the bigger cities in Croatia, but still not that big, it was nice to arrive back in the country after the initial visit to the north a couple of weeks ago. Trying to be strategic in the heat, after our arrival we decided it would be best to do a walk on the city walls sooner rather than later. So at around midday after some ice cream morning tea, we dodged the cruise ship groups to get up on the city wall for a view of the old ... read more

Thursday today and the boat is lmost ready for the water. The intention is to launch tomorrow, so at last we will be under sail. As yet we haven't left the marina and i am feeling a little guilty as I should be going into Dubrovnik to look around since it is 7years since I was here last. We will try to get in tomorrow. We have eaten out every night as it is easier than doing stuff on the boat, but once on the water we will be eating onboard much more. In the marina there are 3 resturants but we tend to go to the one by the pool as it is a magic setting. The 3rd crew member arrived yesterday. Doug is a friend of Martins and comes from Wellington. So a few ... read more

Day 27, Wed. Today is down time. We woke up at 10:00, fixed breakfast of egg, toast, coffee, and juice. Ivana come down and invited us for a beer on the steps with her friend Pero who owns 8 apartments in the old town. It was interesting to hear how they got started with this business. I like the local side of Dubrovnik (Rules of the Road #5: stay as local as you feel comfortable). Gary did the dishes and I blogged. We made arrangements for travel on Thursday to the island of Korcula. The ferry leaves at 8:30. We had lunch in the room with sandwiches Gary found at the grocery. We relaxed, then went to a nearby sandy beach to swim. There were lots of people since it was so hot! Then we bought ... read more
