Saturday, October 22 We had to leave House Tereza early because we had to drop off the car rental in Dubrovnik by 10:30 am. It was great having the GPS system to find both the apartment to drop off the luggage, and then the Imperial Hilton Hotel to drop off the car. After I dropped off the car, I walked back through the old town of Dubrovnik to the apartment--about a kilometre. Our place is up the hill from the entrance to the old town--about a 5 minute walk. We met our host and started to unload the car. We were carrying luggage up the stairs, turned a corner, then up more stairs, more corners, and more stairs! Finally we got the apartment after nearly 70 stairs! We then turned around to go back for the ... read more

Dubrovnikin lentokenttä sijaitsee laaksossa pienen vuorijonon takana rannan suuntaisesti. Jo lähestyttäessä kenttää kävi selväksi, että lento tulisi päättymä... read more

Geo: 42.6537, 18.0948 The ship moored up in the morning at Dubrovnic so after a hearty breakfast we were tendered over to the old harbour just outside the city walls. It was a very hot sunny day and the place was absolutely packed with tourists and groups of people being shown around. The last time we had been in April it rained and there were fewer people. However we paid the fee of 70Kuna which is about 10 euros each to go onto the city wall. It is worth doing as there are very good views of the city and the islands around. It was a pity that there were so many people also walking around it. Normally it would take about 2 hours to go around the whole thing but after going half way we ... read more

DUBROVNIK Today we went into the historic city of Dubrovnik, we had been told it would be a highlight of our tour and we were not disappointed. The city was bombed mercilessly during the homeland war (although they call it the aggression) and large parts were destroyed. The city was then rebuilt in the keeping with the original style. We had our usual walking tour with a local guide who explained the history of the city, showed us around and pointed out the best things to visit. After the walking tour we took the gondola to the top of the hill overlooking the city the view from the top was amazing, you could see the wall surrounding the old city, the defensive positions, and the new town and of course you could look out to sea ... read more

SALONA ROMAN RUINS We started our day with a visit to the Roman ruins in Split; they are a short drive from Split at Salona Township. It was a bit of a surprise going to see Roman ruins in Croatia, but in its day the Romans had a vast empire. The ruins aren’t as visited as many and we were free to walk around and in between them. There are ruins from the first and second century’s plus the remains of an ancient aqueduct. They are recognised as some of the best preserved Roman ruins in existence and were well worth the visit. DIOCLETIAN PALACE - SPLIT From there it was back to Split to visit the Diocletian Palace. The Palace is the central feature of the Split Old Town which is located around the harbour ... read more

Now, where was I? Suitably relaxed, we packed the Berlingo, said our goodbyes to the campsite fella and his cat, and headed south-east-ish. We had decided to head for Dubrovnik, and the usual way to get there was to head southwest, straight towards the coast. We decided to take the advice of Nedzo from Blagaj and hang a left on highway 6. As is usual, taking local advice paid off. Not only did it reduce the number of border crossings (the normal way required driving into Croatia, then back into Bosnia, then into Croatia again) but it took us through some quieter, dry Mediterranean type countryside. The road wounnd its way through some lovely country, through towns with great names like Stolac, Ljubinje and Trebinje, all a bit bucolic in a dry sort of way. Not ... read more

we had a full day in Debrovnick today, so after breakfast we headed into town. I went to the war memorial gallerie meusem which was quite interesting with all the information and photos. After spending a couple of hours there had a quick lunch which we had prepared at camp before heading off to walk around the city's wall. It took just under 2hours to walk around the wall, but it had some amaxing views of the city and the sea out beyond. After we had finished walking the wall we had a wee walk around the streets. We then headed back to camp about 5ish, found the beach which was a 10min walk and had pebbles, it was refreshing as was a very hot day. It was a pretty relaxed evening as we got dinner ... read more

Ok, so it’s on to Dubrovnik in Croatia, and I can’t wait! Hitting the old town on the first night for Dave’s birthday, it was definitely a challenging backing it up after last night in Albania but I just had to suck it up and put my party shoes back on. The city is an amazing sight to behold, entirely enclosed in fortress walls standing 15 to 20m high, you actually cross a draw bridge to get in. And that it still functions as a city is really cool. The first club we hit was basically all Contiki unfortunately, but I did get to have a drink called a ‘sex bucket’ :-), so that was kinda cool. The second club, however, was sensational!! Awesome layout, cranking music, dancing cages, and a strange hole that simply went ... read more

Heading south from Slovenia, I crossed into the Croatian part of the Istrian peninsula. The bus arrived in the Croatian city of Pula 10 minutes early even though it was 45 minutes late in Slovenia and we had to stop for 15 minutes at the border for passport control, so not quite sure how that happened. Pula is right at the tip of Istria, and as the name suggests, it has a very Italian past. The city has some of the best Roman ruins I've seen, including the impressive Amphitheatre from the 1st century BC (the 6th largest surviving example) as well as several Roman gates and arches dating from the same era. The main square in the city is called the Forum, and is home to the 1st century Roman Temple of Augustus, as well ... read more
