Hello my fellow travellers! Well, I'm back at Mia's after my day in Zagreb and I have to admit that this was the laziest day so far of my travel, I don't know why but somehow I just made an unconscious agreement with myself today not to rush around sightseeing but to instead just take it easy. It was a very nice feeling actually and it felt more like I was on a vacation today than it has done previously on this trip. Luckily the centre of Zagreb is quite compact so I still picked up the main sights without even really trying and I actually saw everything I wanted to except for the castle of Medevgrad. Quite some time did go to fixing the next stage of my trip though, there are actually quite poor ... read more

Zagreb was pencilled for our next visit, although campsites were few and far between once we left the coast, we were lucky enough to find a really lovely site near a little village called Duga Resa, not far from Karlovac and the staff there had confirmed that we could reach the capital by train. Duga Resa is situated on a lovely clear river: Mreznica, who’s water reaches temperatures of around 26 degrees (there were plenty of people splashing about in the water or lazing on the shady banks when we arrived on a hot public holiday weekend!), the surrounding area is quite flat in comparison to many other parts of the country and as it’s very near to the Slovenian border the houses have that distinctive ‘Alpine’ look that I love! The fields and gardens were ... read more

Here is the last of it. On our last day, we went to Domagoj's Pride Shop, went to Croatia's biggest mall, ate supper at Bobans and hung out with the family for a bit near Jelacic Square. The one out of the ordinary incident was the fact that Abbey and Ayden met Dražen Ladić. He was likely Croatia's best goalkeeper. There is no bigger sport in Croatia, so it was nice to meet someone of such importance. All in all, it was a very good trip! Thanks for following the blog!!!... read more

We made it to Zagreb today! Not before having to make the traditional stop at the Karlovac McDonald's though. Got to the hotel Dubrovnik at about 3. while dad rested, the rest of the crew went out to shop a bit. After that, we meet Domagoj, Lea, Ivana and Franjo for supper at the restaurant at our hotel. The food was Excellent. After eating we had to head out to Makšimir for the Dinamo Zagreb game. They were playing a team called Sheriff from Moldova in a Champions League qualifier. It was quite an experience. We had to pay 5 x the regular ticket price, found out only half of the stadium was available for seating due to penalties handed down on the club for racist violations, saw 10 times as many SWAT people than I ... read more

Friday July 26 – Today was got up at 5:30am. We wanted to take the bus back to Ljubljana at 6:25am so that we could get the 8:15am train to Zagreb. The next train wasn’t until 2:45pm, and we would have wasted the day. The bus came on time and got us to the train station around 7:45am. The train was also on time, which was great since it is a train coming from Zurich. This was actually the train I had considered taking from Zagreb to Zurich to get home. I’m glad I just bought a flight instead. There were a lot of people waiting for the train, and we didn’t have a seat reservation, so I was worried. Many of the seats on the train had reservation tags, but many turned out to be ... read more

Apparently I didn't have enough of nature being out in Plitvice for two days - today I went to Maksimir Park, a large park in the east end of the city. I brought a sandwich and had a picnic while reading my book. No, it wasn't the beauty standards of the past few days, but it was nice and quiet. Finally, somewhere without a heap of tourists! I continued venturing around the park - I decided to go check out the zoo, it was only like... $4? haha. It was a decent enough zoo... the cages were relatively well maintained (minus one or two), and they're in the process of rebuilding and creating new enclosures, so that's always good to see. And because it's late here and I don't feel like stringing these into paragraphs (oh, ... read more

Zagreb capital of Croatia 11 and 12 July 2013 Feeling elated after our wonderful walk along the Plitvicka Lakes and after a lovely shower (even though it is a little cooler up in the mountains (28 degrees), it was still hot walking and climbing), we did the leisurely drive to Zagreb. Even though the E71 was a second level road, it was an excellent road. We drove through Karlovac which had an Old Town. After that, we joined the A2 motorway. The toll was 33 kuna ($6 AUD). We set our GPS to the only camp site near Zagreb, first by its coordinates. It took us to a site which was an empty paddock, and later we found it was about 500m from the camp. We then reset it to the name of the camp site. ... read more

Croatia is a cool place. Lazy morning getting my things in order - needed to do laundry (ugh the worst pack of backpacking, let me tell you), buy bus tickets to Plitvice and train tickets to Budapest. So lazy, but productive. The walk to the bus station was beautiful in it's own way. There was no one out - Sunday seems to be very dead here in Zagreb. Ghost town-esque. Stores are mostly closed and even a lot of restaurants are closed too. Odd. Anyway, the road to the station has a long wall with graffiti all over, so I was quite content snapping away my photos. After that I pretty much spent my day wandering towards the Upper and Lower Towns. Very very quiet... again, must be because it's Sunday. (Hoping it's a little livelier ... read more
