I got more time around Zagreb than I expected, which is a good thing. To the dismay of Lejla, and probably of Haris, too, I'm not going to make it to Dalmatia, the coastal region of Croatia. Blame it on my poor timing (I need to be in Budapest on Monday) and the horrible train/bus routes and times between the coast and Budapest. I'm sorry, but I'm not spending 20+ hours on a bus or train in one day. I hadn't planned on leaving Slovenia this morning at all. In fact, my plan was to take the bus/train around 12:30PM. I arrive in Zagreb via overnight train from Frankfurt. I was not knowing what to expect for this trip. I do not have much experience in Eastern Europe, and I also have never used the Croatian currency Kuna. I had to familiarize myself with this, but this really should not be an issue. It was sprinkling rain when I arrived, and I had to find my hostel from the train station. I knew the instructions said it was about a fifteen minute walk, so I tried to keep whatever covered and dry as I possibly could and away I go. We left the coast for good today. We had to stop early into our trip to take a picture of the photogenic town of Primošten. Then it was off to Letinac. Although Lika was not on out list of destinations originally, I was not going to drive by Letinac and Brinje and be the person to decide NOT to let dad see family. It was really worth it as we spent a good hour at Letinac. Nevenka looked good even though she has not been feeling well lately. A little cheese, crackers, and rakija later, we bid Nevenka farewell and we were off to Brinje. We thought Mike had gotten lost on the way. We had to turn around to go to try to find him. Ganz Zagreb ist heute im Fussballfieber. Draussen laufen gerade Leute mit Troeten anscheinend Richtung Public Viewing. Allerdings scheint jetzt auch hier ein Gewitter aufzuziehen (mit etwas Wind und einigem Regen und so). Den ganzen Tag ueber waren schon Fans mit ihrem rot karrierten Trickots unterwegs. Und es gab viele Verkaufsstaende, wo man neue erwerben kann. Ich bin nach dem Fruehstueck nochmals auf Zimmer aber dann auch wieder in die Stadt. Zuerst zum Trg. Josipa Jelecica, dem zentralen Platz. Dann ueber den Dolac Market zur Kathedrale. Von da zum Viertel Gradec, gleichfalls in der Oberstadt. Dort durch das Steinerne Tor zum Trg. Svetog Marka mit St. Mark's Church, Parlament und Praesidentenpalast. Danach kurz zum Museum of Broken Relationships, auch vom Reisefuehrer empfohlen.
