Po slabom spanku smer blizka bus stanica. Vonku hmla. Cs meska pol hodinu. Prichadza so psom. Ked tak rozmyslam, chorvatov ... read more

Good breakfast then departed 8am. Had to turn back as somebody left their ipad at the hotel, wasted an hour. Roadstop then crossed border into Croatia, had to disembark twice at the crossings. Arrived Zagreb at midday, picked up Mattea for city tour. Bus tour around the lower town then walked the upper town which is the old town. Stopped at old town square, where cathedral and parliament buildings. Walkedvdown streets to lookout over the lower town then through the old stone gate to the lower town, market square to the main Cathedral then main city square. Spent an hour wandering around stopping for coffee and ice cream at Krass cafe recommended by Mattea. Back to city square where there was a motorbike meet, (appox 100 bikes) they were just heading off which was great to ... read more

We have reached the farthest point of our journey. Now to start the 1000 km drive southeast to Skopje. Today is our third and final visit to Croatia, to the capital city of Zagreb. It’s all motorway so progress is rapid but dull. After days of yearning for a decent motorway as we picked our way along Bosnian goat tracks and Albanian roadworks, I’m bored of motorways now. The old man alleviates the the boredom briefly by taking a wrong turn and accidentally heading for Austria. We find our way back onto the Zagreb road, cross the border and reach our destination by 10.30. Lonely Planet doesn’t have much to say about Zagreb, which is fine as I am out of clean underwear. So, first port of call is the laundrette. Armed with clean pants, we ... read more

So Dan left us this morning. His alarm went off at 5 am, and he was out the door by 5:15. We woke up and said our goodbyes and then went back to sleep. Toure picked us up 10 to start our day's tour of the city. Since the day before was a lot of walking, we started later in the morning and drove around the rest of the city. We started with a drive to the upper town. It was the wealthy area of the new town. We drove around all the homes of the ambassadors to Croatia. The homes were incredible and one definitely wants a job as an ambassador to Croatia! There were many neighborhoods that had beautiful architecture and it was quite hilly. Our first stop was at the town cemetery. It ... read more

My grand plan was to get to northern Italy by the second Saturday in June to be available to start another month of summer camp like I’d done the summer before. This meant I had about 5 days after leaving Manchester to do a bit of traveling. When I was planning, I decided I’d like to spend time in Slovenia, because I’d only driven through a sliver of it the summer before. It was also conveniently pretty close to where one of my favorite Italian host families lived in Friuli, so it would give me the option to meet them again. The way the flights worked out best was to fly from Manchester to Zagreb, so I had a chance to visit the small capital of Croatia that I’d last visited 9 years earlier with high ... read more

About a day before I leave wherever I am, I’ve started booking my hostel for the next place. At the start of this trip I was looking for clean rooms, social areas, close to the town, etc etc, but my booking criteria has changed completely. It is now this: Air Conditioning! It doesn’t really matter what else is at the hostel after that. Hostelworld reviews say - “There were rats in the kitchen!!”……. My thoughts… “Did someone say free breakfast?!” So I booked by hostel (with air conditioned room) at my next destination, which is Zagreb, the capital of Croatia. I took the 7 ½ hour train journey from Budapest, which had little air conditioning and no drinking water – even to buy - and arrived at my hostel a sweaty yet dehydrated mess. Incidentally, this ... read more

The train from Split to Zagreb was comfortable but had no dinning car like the Orient express so we feasted on half a roasted chicken and fruit bought from the market in Split. Zagreb is a quiet and peaceful capital to wind down in after our trip. After a fabulous roasted lamb dinner we sat on the grass in the park and listened to an open air concert, one of the Zagreb Classics series. Yesterday, We spent a pleasant hour in the botanical gardens and was fascinated by the huge water lillies. See if you can spot the frog.... read more

I was really dreading this trip... Actually when we were looking into coming to Bosnia this trip and the one from Kotor to Mostar, were the two trips that made me a bit unsure about going to Bosnia at all... Since we did manage to turn the 9hour Kotor-Mostar journey into a 3hour one, we were hoping we would survive this loooong journey as well... 6+ hours... Still didn't like the sound of that though... We had some assigned seats but decided not to use them and took some other ones with way more leg room... We got some looks from a couple that walked into the bus later on, guessing we took their seats? But hey, the bus wasn't full and they got the same kind of seat right next to us, so hopefully no ... read more

Day 247 Wednesday 21st September 2016 – Zadar to Zagreb Early start, and out of bed and packing our bags. Shelley not happy about moving and I think she could just about nest in Zadar except the town is heading for winter and the first hint of cold and she would be out of here. Had breakfast at the café around the corner and then completed our packing and marched the twenty minutes to the bus station. Had to check out of our apartment before 10 and our bus wasn’t till 11.30 so we had a nice long wait for our bus. The journey to Zagreb went without a hitch along an incredibly well built freeway with lots of bridges and tunnels, one of which was over 5 kilometres long. Got to Zagreb at ... read more

With the clouds clearing, a picnic packed and the bus dropping us off in a forest we were all looking forward to a day at the lakes. Woolly says – Hmmm lakes equal water, not good with my allergy! I do however like looking at lakes and love the Lake District in Britain with it’s miles of walks and peace and quiet, the two thousand tourists queuing at the ticket desk suggested that this set of lakes might be a bit different! Leaving Zoe and myself to pay (something you don’t do in the Lake District) the small furry one disappeared from sight through the hoards that were surrounding us. Woolly says – well why wait in a queue I have servants to do that! Having battled my way through the masses I sat and waited ... read more
