Und zwar ... read more

After the excess of riot police overtime at the Derby the day before, it would have seemed reasonable that there would be a void on the streets of Zagreb come Monday morning. The leaders of the Bad Blue Boys had all been detained after altercations with the enforcers of law and order as they exited the Maksimir after the game and the Hajduk contingent should surely have gone home. It was with some surprise therefore, that we discovered a police presence on the approach to Zagrebello – the training complex of NK Zgareb down by the River Sava. The NK Zagreb team were in the middle of a practice match on the near pitch against their reserves, but surely that didn’t need the extra protection? We had gone to Zagrebello in search of the elusive pin ... read more

We had originally bought a return ticket to Zgareb , but it transpired that the return bus for the Sunday morning didn't exist. We purchased a single on another company, but were assured that a refund on the unused portion would be "no problem". The problems started as we approached the first toll booth entrance to get back on the motorway to Zgareb. The bus inexplicably did a U turn. The other passengers remained calm, as we headed off down a side road. After observing road signs, I figured out we were on a diversion .... a diversion that probably lasted 40 miles. It was later revealed in a newspaper that there had been a serious accident somewhere near the 6 km tunnel on Saturday, 30 odd vehicles involved, deaths etc and as a result the ... read more

Daylight in Rijeka revealed streets of Venetian architecture set back behind the waterfront. The Church of St Vito was tucked behind that in the small Old Town. The Jadralinja ferry building stood majestically over the port area and the local version of the Tuxedo Princess nightclub floated in the harbour. A few cranes perched on the docks, but whether they were in a permanent state of inactivity was open to debate. We had no time to explore further. The Autotrans chariot was due out for Zagreb at 7.45 am. We retreated back to the Bus Station to secure our seats. The bus pulled away bang on time and proceeded on a slightly different route out of town. The driver was clearly under training. He came to a grinding halt, just before he almost pulled on to ... read more

Dobar dan! This blog contains the second part of my visit to Croatia. While I was in Split, we also visited Trogir, a small but beautiful city located less than half an hour west of Split which is also a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Kamerlengo fort offers spectacular views over the city. It’s a beautiful town to visit as a short half-day trip from Split. After Split I continued towards the capital, Zagreb. My friends in Zagreb, Viktor and Melita who I also met in Rovinj in 2007, arranged a car for me. Viktor works at a rental car and many companies needed to relocate their cars from Dalmatia back to Zagreb. I had to go to Split airport to take one car to Zagreb airport which are about 370km away from each other. I ... read more

I have some catching up to do. After leaving Ljubljana, I took the train to Zagreb, Croatia. My first comment is that the young women in Zagreb are very fashionable and pretty. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for the men. Not as many lookers, but I haven’t given up hope. My hotel in Zagreb was terrific. I couldn’t have picked a better location. It was right in the center by the main square and only twenty million steps up to the Old Town. Not really, but it seemed like it. It was just at the bottom of the steps to the best part of the city. It was also right next to the Dolac Market, with tons of fresh fruits and vegetables. It was really beautiful and I saw things that I had never seen ... read more

We had a wonderful breakfast at the hotel - best one yet - complete with fresh squeezed OJ and champagne (I do love a good mimosa!). We explored the city, although it was a dreary day, but we really enjoyed it. It was not very crowded and some places made us feel like we were the only tourists. We visited the Botanical Gardens, St. Marks church, the cathedral, and just walked all over. All of the architecture was beautiful and you could see the Italian influence. We had lunch at our hotel (I had an amazing puff pastry stuffed with a lobster and leek cream sauce, topped with truffles) and then we packed as it was our last night in Croatia. We decided to have one last traditional Croatian meal and ended up at the top ... read more

Sataa ja salamoi. Nukuin pitkaan enka pitanyt kiiretta lahdon kanssa. Hostellissa taisi olla lisakseni enaa nelja majoittujaa. Tein lahtoselvityksen paluulennolle. Unohdin hetkeksi passini olohuoneeseen, enka ollut edes tarvinnut sita lahtoselvityksessa. Koska talle paivalle oli ennustettu sadetta, olin varannut talle paivalle paivalipun joukkoliikenteeseen. Paasin liikkeelle vasta klo 13.30. Puin paalleni Eemelilta ostamani kertakayttosadetakin, joita en ollut nahnyt myynnissa koko matkallani. Aluksi tosin ei satanut, mutta sitten taas. Ajoin ensin kaakkoon, sitten pohjoiseen ja siella viela erillisen pikkulinjan 15 paahan. Tuolloin ei enaa satanut, joten kokosin kertakayttosadetakin reppuun. Sitten keskusaukiolle ja pitkalle lanteen. Kavin syomassa ratikkalinjojen paatepysakilla, josta lahti lukuisia bussilinjoja.

Matkan alkupuoli vaikutti siihen, kuinka koimme Zagrebin. Kavin kasvitieteellisessa puistossa ottamassa aurinkoa. Seurasin sitten opaskirjasen kavelyreitteja. Menin... read more
